- THE NUMERIC KEYPAD
-
-
- Using The Numeric Keypad With The WordPerfect Program
- (Use WP5.0/5.1)
-
- The number keys on the keypad on right side of keyboard)
- serve three purposes.
-
- 1. You can print any combination of numbers. (Num Lock key
- must be in the ON position.)
-
- 2. You can move the cursor in any of four directions using
- the four arrow keys. (Num Lock OFF). (When using programs
- like WordPerfect.
-
- 3. When used with the special <Alt> key you can create most
- of the 256 characters of the ASCII Character set, and the IBM
- Entended Character set.(Num Lock key must be in OFF
- position.) See Tables below.
-
- The Numeric Keypad With The Num Lock Key In The ON
- Position (Indicator light is ON):
- ▀ The number-keys, will be active and will type numbers.
- ▀ The four grey keys print four math symbols: ( + - * / ).
- The <Enter> key remains active ( enabled.)
-
-
- The Numeric Keypad With The Num Lock OFF
- ▀ The 0 key becomes the Ins (Insert key).
- ▀ The 1 key becomes the End key.
- ▀ The 3 key becomes the PgDn key.
- ▀ The 7 key becomes the Home key.
- ▀ The 9 key becomes the PgUp key.
- ▀ The period (.) key becomes the Del key (Delete key).
- ▀ The 2,4,6,8 keys, are now active four-directional arrow
- keys.
- ▀ Two of grey Math symbol keys ( * / ) remain the same,
- that is, they print the symbol as appears on the key.
- ▀ The plus (+) key acts as a page down key.
- ▀ The minus (-) key acts as a page up key.
- ▀ The larger ENTER key is functional all of the time.
-
- If you use a lot of numbers you may want to use the Numeric
- keypad with the Num Lock ON. Use TAB key to set left
- margins.
-
-
- DOS AND THE NUMERIC KEYPAD
- At The DOS prompt C> or C:\>
- The Numeric keypad for the four Math keys ( + - * / ) are
- always active regardless of the Num Lock position.
- The Num Lock must be on to use the numbers.
-
-
- EACH KEY HAS AN ID NUMBER
- Every key has what is called a Ascii number. For example,
- the name PAT: (Turn off Num Lock key)
- Press and hold down the Alt key..then on the keypad
- press 80..release Alt key.. The letter P appears on the screen.
- Repeat using 65 (for A) and 84 for T
- Page 14 gives the complete listings of the Ascii decimal codes.
-
- To make Resume into Résumé...use the Alt key and 130 on
- the keypad.
- ç é Æ ▀
- This is part of the ASCII code. A code used for sending
- information to another computer anywhere in the world. This
- is how computers talk to each other using the ASCII code
- numbers.
-
-
- THE NUMERIC KEYPAD AND NON-KEYBOARD CHARACTERS
- The right end of the keyboard contains a small group of
- numbered keys from 0 to 9 called the Numeric keypad. The
- numeric keypad is used to make non-keyboard characters. Of
- the 256 possible character codes the numeric keypad can
- produce most of them using the <Alt> key plus the numeric
- code. For example, if you press and hold down the <Alt> key
- and then type 171 on the keypad.., release the <Alt> key you
- create the fraction ½ . Or, Press <Alt> then 223, you will get
- this character ▀ . DOS does not use the numeric keypad as a
- a calculator. However, there are programs available that do
- make use of the keypad as a calculator.
-
-
- AMERICAN USAGE OF FOREIGN CHARACTERS
- Knowing how to create foreign characters from the
- Numeric Keypad can come in handy.
-
- For example, some car ads and computer ads use the
- word Déjà (dah zhah) meaning Already seen. Then you hear
- people saying Déjà vu (Fr. Already seen) An illusion of having
- experienced something.. that is really being experienced for
- the first time.
-
- Knowing the ASCII code numbers for the Keypad shows how
- easily you can create these French words used by Americans.
-
- HOW TO USE THE NUMERIC KEYPAD
- To make the letter é for Dé.. Hold down the Alt key and
- type 130.
- Then release the Alt key.
-
- To make the à repeat using Alt 133, like this:
-
- Dé<Alt 130> j à <Alt 133>
-
- When put together makes the word: Déjà
-
-
-
- USE NUMERIC KEYPAD FOR FOREIGN WORDS
- Many languages use some kind of accent markings on letters
- of a word. These markings called diacriticals (di-a-krit'ic-als)
- change the way a word is pronounced.
- For example, when you add accent marks to the word
- resume (to begin again) both its meaning and pronunciation
- are changed. The word changes to
- Résumé (rez'umay..French) ..meaning a summary of your experience.
-
- Many of these foreign diacritical marks can be found on the
- Numeric keypad located on the right side of your keyboard.
- The markings are formed by pressing and holding down the
- Alt key, and then typing the proper code number..when you
- release the Alt key.. the character appears on the screen.
-
- Example:
- The Señora and her daughter Niña like Häagen Dazs ice
- cream.
- HOW IT IS DONE:
- The Se<Alt 164>ñora and her daughter
- Ni<Alt 164>ña
- like H<Alt 132>äagen Dazs ice cream.
-
- Example:
- ▀ Señor Gonzalez collects escargots at the seashore and
- cooks them in rosé wine. He likes crêpe suzettes for
- dessert.
-
- ▀ Hübert asked Garçon (waiter) to put strawberries on
- his crêpes suzettes.
-
- ▀ Susan told garçon to have the chef sauté the ground
- beef.
-
- ▀ Déjà varooom An American journal ad selling super-
- fast computers.
- ▀ Déjà vu An illusion of having experienced
- something that is really being
- experienced for the first time.
-
-
- KEYPAD CODES
- ▀ Rosé wine <Alt 130>
- ▀ Crêpes suzettes <Alt 136>
- ▀ Hübert.. a man's name <Alt 129>
- ▀ Garçon.. waiter <Alt 135>
- ▀ Déjà (da zhah) <Alt 130 = é> <Alt 133 = à>
- ▀ Häagen Dazs..ice cream <Alt 132>
-
- ▀ Sauté... Cooked or browned in a pan with small
- amount of butter or oil.
- ▀ Frappé... A partly frozen drink. A thick milk shake.
-
- To Make the bent arrow used as the <Enter> key.
- Use Alt and keypad: Alt 17
- Alt 196 twice ── Alt 217 ┘
- Put them together.... ──┘ (Alt 17 does not print out).

- The Ascii character set covers the alphabet,
- both upper and lower case letters. It also includes
- the punctuation characters like quotation and exclamation
- marks. The number 32 represents a space.
-
- To make one of these characters from the keyboard
- you must hold down the ALT key, then TYPE the code
- number on the KEYPAD. Release the ALT key. The
- character will appear on the screen.
- For example, to make a dollar sign ($) using the ASCII code,
- hold down the ALT key and enter 36 on the KEYPAD.

- The Extended Character Set has an important use in
- the "Ansi Escape Sequence" when used in
- this formula ( Prompt $e[0;59;200p.)
- This will formula will assign the F1 key (0;59) with
- the Lower left corner character (╚) for making a box.
-
- When the F1 function key is pressed, it will create on
- the screen, the left corner of a box ╚ .
-
- To make a box use the codes above, like this:
