Marcia Pitch is an artist working in sculpture, collage, assemblage, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1946. She studied from 1965-1968 at the University of Manitoba, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture, from 1968-1969 at the California College of Arts and Crafts, and from 1969-1970 at the University of British Columbia, where she received a Teaching Certificate and later pursued Independent Studies, from 1975-1978.
Scope and content
The work consists of an undetermined number of molded soft rubber snakes, each 70 cm long, from a sculptural installation called "Snake Pit" 1988, by Marcia Pitch, installed in a document box.

The artist provided the following citation about her work: "Despite their playful demeanor, Pitch's assemblages present a considered inquiry into the relationship between consumer and popular culture and a questioning of the impact of both on the natural environment. Behind the benign face of domestic knickknacks and toys, 'human nature loses track of reason and runs amok.' (M. Pitch) Her work takes issue with hierarchical canons of taste and cultural legitimacy. It explores those regions of mass culture directed at women and children, reclaiming and reassembling outmoded or discarded domestic items and toys into narrative formats that are alternately ironic and apocalyptic."
