SPACE, INC.
Space, Inc. will allow the player to take control of an
interplanetary merchant vessel using a mix of detailed simulation
and role-playing. As a graduate of the Interuniversal Trade
Commission's academy and a newly commissioned captain, the player
is provided with a loan to cover the cost of a ship and an
initial cargo. This loan must be repaid in order to achieve
financial independence and become a free trader in a highly
competitive universe. The ship can be customized to the extent
of the player's ability to pay for and/or "find" equipment.
There are many dangers that might be encountered while hopping
from one world to the next (financial problems, pirates, and
sabotage.), but there are also many wonders and exciting events
to be experienced. Once the first cargo is delivered, a player
must test their skills at making deals and participating in
auctions to compete for more profitable cargo. Many different
star systems lie waiting for visitors to reach their soil. The
colonies provide the player with a variety of scenic
distractions, many people to interact with, and bargains to
arrange. The player will be able to acquire wealth through
several different channels: cargo hauls, cargo investments,
stock market investments, services, royalties and rewards. A
player may be content with building a financial empire or may
aspire to unravel mysteries leading to dangers unthought of by
anyone.
The ship controls feature 3-dimensional looking push
buttons, switches, and touch screens. While many of the systems
have automatic controls, these systems may also be controlled
manually. A detailed real-time engineering model is used to
provide a life-like response from the ship. At Engineering, a
series of control screens allow the player to peer into the inner
workings of his ship and modify their performance. A detailed
systems manual will be provided with the game in order to
familiarize the player with his systems. Overall, the game's
interface will allow intuitive, user-friendly access to all
aspects of Space, Inc.
Space, Inc. requires an IBM compatible system running DOS
3.0 or greater, Either VGA (320x200x256) or EGA (320x200x16), a
harddisk, and a Microsoft compatible mouse driver (one is
provided with the program.) The player may control the program
with the use of a mouse or with a keyboard.
A few words on some of the ship's features:
Captain's Log - The captain's log is your personal notepad for
information you may gather during the voyage. It is also the
repository of data entered by the ship's previous commanders and
may provide valuable clues to future business or traps to avoid.
Access can be gained from any screen.
Control Room - The control room provides access to all of the
major subsystems in the starship. It is here that most of the
ship's action will take place. Immediate access to all of the
control room stations can be gained by moving your mouse/cursor
to the desired station and pressing the left button/enter.
Captain's Computer Console - The captain's console allows you to
check into current stock prices on your personal computer, access
the ship's accounting records, as well as a library of valuable
information. You may spend a lot of time there!
Engineering - The engineering screen gives you access to all of
the ship's power and propulsion subsystems. Major problems can
be resolved here by controlling power requirements and disabling
unused subsystems.
DSV Bay - The Docking Service Vehicle (DSV) bay provides access
to the DSV and space. The DSV is your primary method for
transporting materials to and from the ship and in gaining access
to colonies on the surface of planets.
Communications - The communications station is your central
screen for ship to ship and ship to station communications. A
standard set of ITC frequencies are provided for quick access.
Frequency scanning and storage facilities are provided for
searching for those "private" communications. To help with
interactive communications, a set of "canned" messages will be
available for review and transmission. The actual message sent
will be in the Interuniversal Linguistic Code, since we all don't
speak the same language!
Weapons - The weapons station provides you a limited set of
weapons along with the long and short range sensor displays.
Depending on how much money has been invested into your weapons
system, you can be armed with phasers, missiles and some very
smart drone ships that can be sent into a battle and controlled
remotely. Future purchases of equipment can further augment your
weapon systems.
Navigation - The navigation system gives you total control of
where you want to go within the confines of the astronavigational
data programmed into it. Controls for velocity and fuel
consumption detail what it will take to get from point to point.
Your navigation computer displays the known universe as a 3-
Dimensional star chart and also stores information on all known
planets and space stations. Once travel is initiated, a
compressed time feature will keep the game moving along during
those long trips between the stars.
Enjoy!
