Jim --
We're trying our hardest to offer the best support possible. We can't always
send update versions automatically, because we don't always know who the
customers are. A large percentage are sold through dealers and distributors,
and not everyone returns the registration card promptly. If you haven't opened
the package over several weeks, did you return the card? If so, you're an
unusual person, and we thank you! Heck, we thank you even if you didn't return
the card!
Seriously, you don't have to return the disk. All you have to do is ask for
Rev #2.00b, and provide us with your name, address, and serial number. You can
mail a request to Spectra Tech Support, phone them, or even just send an e-mail
message to Tim, the Tech Support Manager. They're at: Spectra Publishing -
1030D E. Duane - Sunnyvale, CA 94086 - 408-730-9291 or e-mail Tim at
71530,2640.
You know, Jim, I was watching another forum last week, and noticed that a
user complained that "Far strings don't work at all in a chained file with
'BRAND X' Basic Compiler" (also newly released a couple of months ago). The
sysop there told him that advertised features weren't guaranteed to work, they
didn't provide interim fixes, and they couldn't say when a new version to
correct it might be available. Don't we get at least one or two "points" for
trying?
Thanks for letting us know your opinion. It's very important to us, and
we'll certainly give a lot of thought to alternate distribution methods in the
future.

First of all, let me say that "the reason I updated from TB to PB was because I
believed your previous statements Re: PB and its P O W E R." I hope.
No, I haven't returned the card. I always do after I open the package and
install on HD.
True, you didn't have to come out with Rev #2.00b and offer a freebe update.
However, those that do not support their products, are not likely to be around
for long.
Guess I was supprised that PB had been updated so quickly, as I said, had not
opened the package yet, when I read the comments. So since I purchased
directly from Spectra, You have my address and serial #, or should.
Hey its no big deal. I'll return the package or whatever.
Now, when will EMS support be out?
You have two atta boys commin, for support.

Thanks for responding, Jim! As you requested, I called the fulfillment center,
and they were able to locate your shipping address. They are expediting an
update copy to you, so you won't have to bother sending your serial number and
address to us. I trust the disk will arrive in good order, but please let me
know if there is any problem. As I said before, there is no reason to return
your old disk. It has never been the intent to require return of the disks in
this upgrade. As to the next version of PowerBASIC, we haven't announced a
shipping date because it is our policy not to pre-announce a product before we
can guarantee the delivery date. To do anything else would be misleading,
which we try hard to avoid. One of the biggest reasons for our support of this
forum is to learn what you, and all of our other users, would like to see in
our upcoming products. We try to listen carefully, and when a major item (such
as EMS) is needed, we put every effort into the prompt development. Further,
we hope it's not a mistake to confirm that these features are currently under
development. We do this only to let you know we are responding to your needs.
I know that there is probably a very fine line between the two. We try very
hard to achieve a balance, even though we'll sometimes make mistakes. The
other alternatives are just much less appealing. I can tell you this: it
won't be next week, but it sure won't be next year, either. I really can't
promise more, until I know more myself. But I will promise to keep all
informed here, just as soon as we possibly can. Thanks again!

I have a problem with some code from Turbo Basic (part of "PICKER", from an
issue of Turbo Technix). I've modified it to work under Power Basic (and
eliminated the need for the other toolboxes). It reads disk directories fine
under AT&T DOS 3.2, but doesn't find any files in the directory under AT&T DOS
2.11 (running on AT&T PC6300's). Did I miss something in the Pwoer Basic
manuals about the differences between DOS 2.x and DOS 3.x, or have I just done
something that's way out in left field and only works under DOS 3? I can
provide a copy of the source as e-mail, but the company probably would consider
it proprietary (since it supports another package we sell) so I can't post it.
On the other hand, maybe you can provide an answer (or some pointers) based on
this rather vague description of the problem. John

Bob,
Do you know if my upgrade (from TB to PB) has been shipped? Also, I'd
like to throw in my two cents on the support discussion. You might want to do
what Turbo Power is doing (I own a few of there products). They charge you $X
per year for what they call the "Fast Update" plan. You get all updates
(including minor ones) automatically. Non Fast Update users get bug fixes by
request (I think - I've got everything on the plan). I guess it's also nice
for you guys because it helps offset the cost of updates. Now, when the EMS
update be out (just kidding, well, not REALLY) :-) Robert

PB files. A few days ago I received 2 new disks with no note on what they are.
The one marked "1 of 2" also has "4.9" on it but I can't believe I've been
granted a massive upgrade. Anyway if I use this version will I be going
forwards or backwards upgradewise as compared to the upgrade stuff in the
forum. Thanks. (And my vote for next new stuff is for vga, 256 colors etc.
etc. so I can putz around with my $2500 worth of video board and monitor. which
is close to unused to date)

Gosh! We can't seem to win today. Sometimes we send too few upgrades, and
sometimes we send too many! (I couldn't resist that -- I'm sorry). Seriously
though, I'm very sorry we're getting a little confusing here. This is the
bottom line on upgrades: PowerBASIC Rev. #2.00b is the current version. We
have issued one patch (PATCH1.ZIP). When we issue a patch, all copies shipped
after that date contain the "patched" code. If you are using #2.00b, run the
patch program, and you WILL have the latest update. You can ALWAYS run the
patch program on any PB marked #2.00b, to ensure it is the very latest version.
You can't do it too many times. I really' hope that helps, but feel free to
let me know if I've added to the confusion. Thanks all for your patience!

Please don't "slow down" the upgrade process!
I know you guys are working to continually develop and maintain PB, and I for
one would rather see a new PATCH file every month rather than just getting one
big change each year.
In my "day job" we maintain mainframe operating systems and we expect monthly
patches from the vendor, sometimes more often than that. It doesn't mean that
the product is bad - it lends comfort that support is there.
Thanks for having patches available on-line, I think it's a good system.

Bob,
In your call for suggestions, I have a minor thought. I've been finding it
quite irritating that PB loads NONAME.BAS upon startup. I'm running my copy on
a Novel network, and it seems to pick up a one line program I wrote some months
ago every time I start it up. The bad thing is, I have no idea where that darn
thing is. It's not in the default directory...it's not in the PB directory.
NONAME.BAS clutters up the pick file so that I've gotten into the habit of
starting PB with the name of the program I'll be editing when I fire it up. Or,
conversely, I've been leaving a blank file named NONAME.BAS in my development
directory so that when I type "PB", it starts out blank. This still clutters up
the pick file, though.
Maybe I'm the only one this is bothering and, if so, oh well. But I wonder how
others feel about this minor thing.
The upshot is that, if this is the only thing I'm finding to harp on, the
program must be quite superb, eh?

Michael,
I understand your grief, however, there is a cure. That is probably why you
don't see others complaining about it.
If you make a config file by selections Options Directory and then saving, the
pick file will always point to the last file you used and come into that with
the cursor where you left off. You can then use Alt-F3 to pick and choose.
If you do not make a config file, then PB does not know what the name of the
last file was and will always start off with NONAME.
Check page 49 ,57 and 74 to 76 of the User Manual for more information.

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but I've been on vacation.
The routine that I need is an updated version of is the CRC/Checksum routine
that is in XMODEM.ARC in the Borland Files Area. I believe that it is the same
as the routine in CHKCRC.ARC. It is an INLINE routine that takes a string and
returns the CRC and the Checksum. I thought this was the same routine that you
had used in NEWCOM (at least in the old version I have).
If you have a different routine (CRC16) that performs the same function in
NEWCOM and that does not require any changes to work under PowerBasic, I can
take a look at that routine.
Thanks much for your time,
Alan

Bob -
More notes -disk whenever I start up. What I would like to do is have the Pick List come up
straightaway; but if I press Alt-F3 first thing, I find NONAME included in the
picks. Is there a command-line switch to go straight to the pick menu ??
(I use the pick menu all the time -- it's great!)
2. When I search for error (Esc-C-F) the compiler window says "compiling". The
old one said "searching" which reassured me that the right thing was happening.
3. I spent a lot of time chasing error 503's. All of the vars I list as
EXTERNAL in units have to be listed in PUBLIC statements in the main program,
apparently -- even tho' they are used only in other units. So now I have a
handy SORTed list of PUBLIC statements. I am thinking of writing a utility that
would scan the lines of unit source code files, parse out all the variables in
EXTERNAL statements, and then write a massive list of PUBLIC statements to disk
for use as an $INCLUDE file. Maybe later.
4. Once I got to the point where my files would compile far enough to try to
link, I found I had a memory shortage. Since I'm addicted to having a RamDisk,
I had to get a RamDisk prg from my friendly local BBS that (unlike VDISK.SYS)
could be configured to a size < 64k. I am fine now with 556,496 bytes free --
with 527,488 it was no go. (I downloaded something called "VARIRAM.ZIP", and
set it to 40K size.)
5. Then I found out about the new version 2.00b and ordered it -- got it the
VERY next day! -- applied the patch dated 3-30 -- and most of my troubles just
evaporated !!! Including the OUT OF MEMORY problems I just told you I'd been
working around !!!
6. Today I did go ahead and write the utility to create lists of PUBLIC
statements -- and am uploading the code today.
Thanks,
-- Howard

Howard,
Go to Options/Directories and set the directories and then Save the
configuration.
The Pick file will then become the ones of the ones you worked with. If you do
not use NoName... it will eventually disappear from the pick list. even if you
do not set the directories, save the config file...
For the Publics... make a little .include file that actually does the link to
each Unit. In this little include, place all publics that the unit needs. To do
this.. use the block marking.. (Ctrl-KB tomark the first External and Ctrl-KK
at the end). Then do a block save to the Include, or a temp filename. Once in
the .Include, use a Global change (CtrlQA) to searce and replace all EXTERNALS
with PUBLIC and set options to GNU for the new change (sorry for the pun).
In this include, also have the $Link for the file.. Then you do not have to
make any changes to the main file to use this unit with any other program you
write.

John,
because the strseg and strptr can point to > 32678, you should make all
revelant things a long integer. In passing the value to a $Inline, you can do
that without changing the inline because the value will never be greater than
65036. All you have to do is change the type in the call to the include to long
integer for this problem.

Bob, I recently had someone ask me whether COM3: can be accessed (for reading
and writing) by PowerBASIC. If so, I would appreciate a few relevant details.
Thanks very much.
Rodney

I've come up with an interesting anomaly:
I compile my program (an integer-to-Gray Code conversion utility)
on a 386 with options set as follows:
8086/88 generated code
emulate coprocessor
all error tests off
compile to an EXE file (A:\TSTGRAY.EXE)
When I run TSTGRAY.EXE on the 386 it performs the conversion correctly
When I run TSTGRAY.EXE on a 8086 (AT&T 6300) ditto
When I run TSTGRAY.EXE on a 286 (AST Premium) it gives me the wrong
answers for the same inputs as the first two trials.
When I change the compiler option to Numeric Test ON & recompile, the EXE
file runs on all machines (no error messages from the Numeric Test, however,
the test just seems to fix things).
The problem is linked to an error in the conversion utility, where I used
regular rather than integer division to shift a bit in a Mask variable
(and fixing this error also makes the EXE file run on the 286, with or
without the Numeric Test), but I am curious and concerned about 2 things:
1. Should I be able to compile an EXE file which gives different results
on different IBM-compatibles? (All three machines had co-processors,
by the way)
2. If the Numeric Test detects an error, shouldn't it flag it rather than
fix (?) it?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

Still no luck with the Btrieve interface program. I changed the A%() to A&()
and when my test program runs the screen goes blank and the system locks. I
uploaded (TURBBTRV.ZIP) which has the old and new versions with my test
program. Any help to get this problem work out would be appreciated.
