Thank you for trying Screen Saver. We hope that it will extend
the life of your display for many years to come.
We encourage you to take a couple of minutes and read this
manual. We have tried to keep it as short and as simple as the
program is to use.

What is Screen Saver?
Screen Saver is a Terminate and Stay Resident utility that is
designed to prevent unnecessary burn-in on an IBM Personal
Computer, IBM PS/2 or IBM compatible displays. Screen Saver
will use approximately 1900 to 2200 bytes of memory, depending
on the type of processor (8088,80286,80386,Etc.) that is
installed in your computer. Screen Saver does not work under
Microsoft Windows or OS/2.
----------------------------------------------------------------
SCREEN SAVER FEATURES
Screen Saver allows for automatic timeout blanking when there
has been no keyboard activity anywhere from 1 to 60 minutes.
Screen blanking may also be accomplished manually through the
keyboard by hitting the same SHIFT KEY three times in a row.
After the screen is blanked, you may enable it by striking any
key on the keyboard, or optionally, with any mouse activity.
Screen Saver has been tested on the IBM PS/2, IBM PC/XT/AT, and
100% IBM compatibles running PC/MS-DOS 2.0 or higher. The
following display cards have been tested: IBM Monochrome Display
Adapter, IBM Color Display Adapter, IBM Enhanced Graphics
Adapter, VGA+, VGA, MCGA, AT&T 6300, all Compaq display systems,
all Tandy display systems, and the Hercules Graphics Card.

----------------------------------------------------------------
GETTING STARTED
To install Screen Saver just insert the diskette that Screen
Saver was delivered on and make it the current drive. Then type
"SS" (do not type the quotes) and press enter. Screen Saver
will automatically detect your display type and set the display
blanking period to 15 minutes. You will see the following start
-up screen:
+-----------------------------------------------+
Screen Saver Version 2.10
===============================================
Copyright 1990 Curtis Software
All Rights Reserved
-----------------------------------------------
Press the same SHIFT key 3 times in order to
blank the video screen manually.
-----------------------------------------------
Press any key to restore the video screen.
-----------------------------------------------
Enter SS /Help to display the help screen.
+-----------------------------------------------+
+-----------------------------------------------+
Auto Screen Blanking is set at 15 minutes.
+-----------------------------------------------+
NOTE! The screen above is for the registered version of Screen
Saver. The Shareware version is much larger in order to explain
the Shareware concept.
That's all there is to it! Now after 15 minutes without any
keyboard activity, Screen Saver will automatically blank the
display.
----------------------------------------------------------------
USER OPTIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------
SETTING THE BLANKING TIME
Screen Saver defaults to a time of 15 minutes for auto blanking.
You may change this value at any time by entering "SS XX", where
"XX" is the number of minutes that you would like to reset auto
blanking to. Screen Saver will display a message acknowledging
the new time. Valid times are in the range of 1 - 60 minutes.
For example, if you typed "SS 10" Screen Saver would acknowledge
your request with the following message:
+-----------------------------------------------+
Auto Screen Blanking is set at 10 minutes.
+-----------------------------------------------+
----------------------------------------------------------------
Screen Saver 2.10 Page 5
----------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
KEYBOARD BUFFER CLEARING
In the default mode Screen Saver will clear the keyboard buffer
when you strike a key to enable the display. This keeps the key
that you've struck from appearing to be an actual key to the
program that is currently running. However, on some PC Clones
this can cause the machine to lock up. To disable the keyboard
buffer clearing option, you must enter a "/K" option on the
command line. You may enable the keyboard buffer clearing
option by entering: "/K+" from the command line. Screen Saver
will display the following message acknowledging that keyboard
buffer clearing has been enabled:
+-----------------------------------------------+
Keyboard buffer clearing has been enabled.
+-----------------------------------------------+
----------------------------------------------------------------
TEMPORARILY DISABLING SCREEN BLANKING
Screen Saver may also be disabled manually without unloading it.
To do so, just type: "Alt Tab". This is a toggle key that
disables and enables Screen Saver. You will hear a low pitched
beep when Screen Saver is disabled. You may enable Screen Saver
by pressing the "Alt Tab" key again. This time you will hear a
high pitched beep when blanking is enabled.
You may also elect to disable Screen Saver via the command line
option. This can be accomplished by typing "SS /D" at the DOS
command line. Screen Saver will then display the following
message acknowledging the request:
+-------------------------------------------+
Screen Saver has been disabled.
+-------------------------------------------+
To enable blanking with a command line option just enter "SS /E"
at the DOS command line and Screen Saver with acknowledge with
the following message:
+-------------------------------------------+
Screen Saver has been enabled.
+-------------------------------------------+
(continued on next page)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Screen Saver 2.10 Page 6
----------------------------------------------------------------
These command line options are useful when loading a program
that either Screen Saver is incompatible with, or maybe you
might not want the screen blanked while in a particular appli-
cation. A good way to go about this is to load the application
via a DOS Batch file. For example, let's say that our program
is called PROG, and we do not want Screen Saver to be in effect
while we are running PROG. Our batch file might look like this:
+-------------------------------------------------------+

REM A batch file to load PROG.EXE
REM First, disable Screen Saver

SS /D

REM Now change into the PROG directory and run PROG

CD\PROG
PROG

REM Upon exiting PROG, enable Screen Saver

SS /E

REM End of batch file
+-------------------------------------------------------+
----------------------------------------------------------------
SCREEN SAVER STATUS
If you need to know the current status of any of the above
mentioned options, then type: "SS /s" and press enter. Screen
Saver will then provide you with the current status by
displaying the following screen:
+------------------------------------------------------------+
Screen Saver Version 2.10
S T A T U S
------------------------------------------------------------
Delay minutes set at.......................... 15
Screen blanking is currently.................. Enabled
Keyboard buffer clearing is................... Disabled
Mouse detection is............................ Enabled

----------------------------------------------------------------
Screen Saver 2.10 Page 7
----------------------------------------------------------------
UNLOADING SCREEN SAVER
You may UNLOAD Screen Saver if no other programs or TSRs have
been loaded on top of it. Just type: "SS /U" - this will
release Screen Saver from memory and restore the system to the
state it was in before Screen Saver was installed. There is no
need to worry about trying to unload Screen Saver if another
program has been loaded on top of it. Screen Saver will safely
let you know that it cannot be unloaded with the following
message:
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
Unable to UNLOAD Screen Saver. It appears that another
TSR has been loaded after Screen Saver. Please remove all
other programs before attempting to unload Screen Saver.
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
If Screen Saver detects that the state of the machine has been
altered (possibly by another ill-behaved TSR) you will see the
following message:
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
Screen Save has been unloaded. However, it appears that
another program (possibly another TSR) altered the state
of the machine and did not restore it properly. This can
cause unexpected problems at times and should therefore
be monitored closely. Unless you are an advance user and
you have a good understanding about TSRs and Interrupts,
we suggest that you go ahead and reboot your machine by
holding down the Ctrl,Alt,Del keys at the same time.
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
If you are sure that everything is OK, and that the state of the
machine is safe, then there is no need to reboot your computer.
Otherwise, play it safe and reboot.
----------------------------------------------------------------
HELP!
And if all else fails, you can get help by typing: "SS /H". The
help screen will list all of the options just discussed.
----------------------------------------------------------------
UNDETERMINED VIDEO ADAPTERS
If screen saver cannot determine the type of video system that
is installed, the following message will be displayed on the
screen:
(continued on next page)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Screen Saver 2.10 Page 8
----------------------------------------------------------------
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
Error! Screen Saver is unable to accurately detect the type
of video adapter that is installed in this system. If you
know for sure the type of video adapter installed, you may
use the following command line option to force the video
type.

SS /v[type]

Where type is: M..................... Monochrome
H..................... Hercules Mono
C..................... CGA or Color
E..................... EGA
V..................... VGA

Example: SS /vc Will force the video type to be CGA.

WARNING!!! Do not use this option unless you are absolutely
sure you know what type of video adapter is
installed. A wrong setting could cause damage to
your monitor. See your documentation for details
about this option!
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
The /v[option] command line switch is available in order to
allow the user to inform Screen Saver as to what type of video
adapter is installed. To see the /v options, just type "SS /v?"
(do not include the quotes) and Screen Saver will display a help
screen with all of the valid options explained.
----------------------------------------------------------------
HERCULES MONO GRAPHICS CARD
Screen Saver has been fully tested on a true Hercules Mono
Graphics card. It has also been tested on a number of other
manufacturers cards that claim to be 100% Hercules compatible.
In most cases, Screen Saver worked flawlessly - in a small
number of cases, however, these cards were found out to be not
so compatible. Please let me explain:
The Hercules Mono Graphics cards support two modes: Text and
Graphics. Screen Saver uses the Hercules suggested method of
detecting whether the card is in Text or Graphics mode.
However, in the case of some of the other manufacturers
compatible cards, Screen Saver is unable to detect when the card
is in Graphics mode. This causes Screen Saver to restore the
screen into Text mode, when it should have been restored in
Graphics mode.
(continued on next page)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Screen Saver 2.10 Page 9
----------------------------------------------------------------
If you find that this is happening, you have two choices: One,
when the screen is displayed and you want to restore it to
Graphics mode, simple hold down the ALT key and press the number
5 on the numeric keypad. This will safely restore the Hercules
card back into Graphics mode. Or Two, when entering into an
application in which you know that you will be using the
Hercules Mono Graphics mode, enter the following command at the
DOS prompt: SS /HG+ and press enter. This will force Screen
Saver to reset in Hercules Graphics mode. Upon exiting the
application you will need to cancel the command by entering: "SS
/HG-" and press enter.
----------------------------------------------------------------
USING A MOUSE
Screen Saver will support a mouse when installed using the /m
option as a command line parameter. Please make sure that Screen
Saver is loaded AFTER your mouse driver program. This should not
be of concern if the mouse driver is loaded in the CONFIG.SYS
file.
It is also important to note that the mouse option is only valid
when initially loading Screen Saver into memory. This is
because Screen Saver does not recognize a mouse by default in
order to save memory. If you decide that you need Screen Saver
to recognize a mouse after Screen Saver is already installed,
you will need to unload Screen Saver from memory and reload it
with the /m option on the command line.
HARDWARE PROBLEMS?
Screen Saver has been tested on a wide variety of IBM PCs and
compatibles. However, with the massive number of clones on the
market today, it is virtually impossible to test every video
display adapter and monitor on the market.
If you find that you are having a problem with Screen Saver
working on your hardware configuration, then we would like to
hear from you. Use the enclosed "Problem Report Form" sheet and
in order to tell us what problems you are experiencing. Then
return it to us at the address printed on the bottom of the
form.
We will make every reasonable effort to fix any reported
problems. This doesn't, however, mean that we will always be
able to fix the problem, just that we'll make a reasonable
effort.

disable the blanking of the screen.
/E.............. Enable Screen Saver - this option will enable
screen blanking. This is the reverse of the /D
option.
/H.............. Screen Saver Help Screen - enough said.
/K.............. Disable Keyboard Buffer Clearing - this option
can be used if clearing the keyboard buffer
causes any problems on your system. This
option is needed on some not so compatible
clones.
/S.............. Displays the current status of Screen Saver
/M.............. Enables mouse support - only valid when initially
loading Screen Saver into memory.
/U.............. Unload Screen Saver - use this option to re-
move Screen Saver from memory. Screen Saver

How to Report A Problem
----------------------------------------------------------------
First, locate the utility program provided with Screen Saver
that is called VSP (Video State Program). This utility is
provided in order to help us better understand your problem.
When you run VSP, it will display a screen full of information
that tells us various information about your display system.
While this information is being displayed, please do a DOS Print
Screen in order to send a copy to the printer. If you don't
have a printer attached to the system, please take the time and
write down the information that is displayed. Don't worry if
the information looks like Greek to you, it is more for our use
in better understanding your display system.
See your DOS manual for instructions on how to print the screen.
Now with your VSP screen printed, fill out the Problem Report
Form and attach the VSP printout to it and mail both to:
