   of Israel, had recently formed a league against Judah, and
   they proceeded to lay siege to Jerusalem. Upon this Isaiah
   hastened to give advice and encouragement to Ahaz, and the
   allies failed in their attack on Jerusalem. But the allies
   inflicted a most severe injury on Judah by the capture of
   Elath, a flourishing port on the Red Sea, while the
   Philistines invaded west and south. Ahaz, having forfeited
   God's favour by his wickedness, sought deliverance from these
   numerous troubles by appealing to Tiglathpileser, king of
   Assyria, who freed him from his most formidable enemies. But
   Ahaz had to purchase this help at a costly price; he became a
   tributary to Tiglathpileser. He was weak, a gross idolater,
   and sought safety in heathen ceremonies, making his sons pass
   through the fire to Molech, consulting wizards and
   necromancers, and other idolatrous practices. His only
   permanent value was the introduction of the sun-dial. He died
   at 36, but was refused burial with the kings, his ancestors.

   Phoenician and Canaanitish nations, as Ashtoreth was their
   supreme female divinity. Some suppose Baal to correspond to
   the sun and Ashtoreth to correspond to the moon; others to
   Jupiter and Venus, respectively. There can be no doubt of the
   very high antiquity of the worship of Baal. It prevailed in
   the time of Moses among the Moabites and the Midianites, Nu.

   worship to the Jews undoubtedly grew out of its licentious
   character. The religion of the ancient British Isles, much
   resembled this ancient worship of Baal, and may have been
   derived from it. Nor need we hesitate to regard Babylonian,
   Bel, Isa. 46:1, or Belus, as essentially identical to Baal,
   though perhaps in some modified form. The plural, Baalim, is
   found frequently, showing that he was worshipped under
   different compounds, among which appear -- (1) BAAL-BERITH
   (covenant of Baal), Judges 8:33, 9:4; the god who comes into
   covenant with the worshippers. (2) BAAL-ZERBUB (lord of the
   fly) and worshipped in Ekron, 2 Kings 1:2,3,16. (3) BAAL-HANAN
   either the name of one of the early kings of Edom (Gen.
   36:38,39) or the name of one of David's officers, who had the
   superintendence of his olive and sycamore plantations. (4)
   BAAL-PEOR (lord of the opening, i.e. for others to join in
   worship). We have already referred to the worship of this god.
   The narrative (Nu. 25) seems clearly to show that this form of
   Baal worship was connected with licentious rites.
