-
- >>PART A. KNOWN PROBLEMS
-
-
- 1. INSTALLATION ISSUES
-
- 1.1 Upgrading DeskTop While DeskTop is running.
-
- Installing DeskTop whilst DeskTop is running may cause the installation
- process to fail. To overcome this close DeskTop before upgrading.
-
-
- 1.2 Installing DeskTop over a previous version.
-
- It is possible to install this version of DeskTop over the previous
- version 3.7.0. The Configuration files including, WMGR.RC, MVIEW.INI files
- will be left intact.
-
- It is not possible to install this version of DeskTop over previous versions
- 3.1.5, 3.1.5inc4 and 3.1.6. Any old configurations will need re-configuring
- when the new version is installed.
-
-
- 1.3 Removing DeskTop.
-
- There are two locations where DeskTop files are kept, the installation
- directory (usually c:\mvw) and the windows directory (usually c:\windows).
-
- The relevant files in these locations will have to be deleted in order to
- fully remove DeskTop.
-
-
- DeskTop directory:
-
- The contents of this directory and any sub-directories below it must be deleted.
-
-
- Windows directory:
-
- The following files will always exist in the windows directory and need to be
- deleted:
-
- MVIEW.INI
- BUTTONS.INI (Version 4.xx onwards)
- VSL.INI
-

-
- 2. COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
-
- 2.1 Using AT&T Stargroup (StarLAN).
-
- If you are using the AT&T StarGroup software, select the
- "Microsoft LAN Manager for UNIX (AT&T)" connection type when configuring a
- remote node.
-
-
- 2.2 Using Beame & Whiteside TCP/IP.
-
- If problems are experienced with Beame & Whiteside TCP/IP
- which seem to indicate data loss or some degree of unpredictability,
- then you should try increasing the buffer space for incoming packets
- configured via the BWCUSTOM utility to, say, 30,000 or 50,000. A
- "Printer not ready" or the PC locking during File Transfer using the FTP
- protocol typically indicates lack of buffer space.
-
-
- 2.3 Using D-Link TCP/IP for DOS.
-
- D-Link TCP/IP for DOS is an OEM version of Locus TCP/IP for DOS.
- All the comments and caveats related to Locus TCP/IP apply to D-Link.
-
-
- 2.4 Using FTP PC/TCP.
-
- 2.4.1 The FTP PC/TCP Virtual Device Driver (VxD) is required in
- order to run other FTP applications alongside DeskTop running over FTP
- TCP/IP.
-
- 2.4.2 Ensure that you allocate enough TCP and packet buffers for
- DeskTop within the FTP kernel:
-
- For FTP PC/TCP prior to version 2.1 for example,
-
- 'kernel-name' -t 16 -p 20
-
- will allocate 16 TCP connections and 20 packet buffer.
-
- For FTP PC/TCP version 2.1 and above, the file PCTCP.INI, which
- is located in the FTP PC/TCP directory should be configured. In the
- [pctcp kernel] section, the packet sizes are determined by the lines,
-
- large-packets =
- small-packets =
-
- The other relevant parameters are,
- tcp-connections =
- udp-connections =
-
- 2.4.3 Device driver entries for IPCUST.SYS and IFCUST.SYS must be
- configured into CONFIG.SYS for all versions of FTP PC/TCP below 2.2.
-
- 2.4.4 Intermittent problems with FTP when using a packet driver can
- be cured by running with a packet driver of version 7.3 or above.
-
- 2.4.5 Once the maximum number of connections has been reached, it
- may prove difficult to effect any connection thereafter until all, or
- almost all, connections have been closed. You are therefore
- recommended to set the maximum number of connections to a higher value
- than you actually need.
-
-
- 2.5 Using Locus TCP/IP for DOS.
-
- Configure the number of connections by using the "-s" argument
- to the LTCPIP program. For example,
-
- LTCPIP -s8
-
- will configure 8 connections.
-
-
- 2.6 Using Microsoft LAN Manager version 2.1.
-
- 2.6.1 Lan Manager 2.1 has introduced support for TCP/IP style
- connectivity. If you want to take advantage of this, you need to have the
- TCP/IP portion installed and configured correctly.
-
- 2.6.2 Make sure you are running the SOCKTSR.EXE TSR situated in the
- LANMAN\ARPA directory.
-
- 2.6.3 The file named TCPUTILS.INI needs changing to increase the default
- number of sockets from 0 to the number of connections required.
-
- 2.6.4 Make sure that the remote node is included in the hosts file in the
- LANMAN\ETC directory
-
-
- 2.7 Using Microsoft LAN Manager for UNIX (SCO).
-
- If you are using the netBEUI protocol stack, DeskTop can perform
- very slowly after the application has been quiescent. As the application
- begins to output again the performance will return to the usual level. To
- overcome this problem include the following line in the [NETBEUI] section
- of the PROTOCOL.INI file which can be found in the Microsoft LAN Manager
- directory.
-
- piggybackacks=0
-
-
- 2.8 Using Novell LAN WorkPlace for DOS.
-
- 2.8.1 If more than 20 UDP and TCP sockets are allocated in total in
- NET.CFG, then you may find that no UDP sockets are accessible.
-
- 2.8.2 Novell LAN WorkPlace for DOS will only work successfully when
- running Windows in enhanced mode.
-
-
- 2.9 Using Sun PC-NFS.
-
- 2.9.1 Using Sun PC-NFS version 3.0.
-
- The size of the PC-NFS libraries that need to be linked to the
- DeskTop MPCNFS.EXE TSR is extremely large. To reduce memory occupation try
- using the "/c" argument to reduce the number of concurrent sockets managed
- by the TSR, or switch to the PC-NFS v3.5 or above products.
-
- PC-NFS v3.0 supports 8 sockets.
-
- 2.9.2 Using PC-NFS versions 3.0.1 and above.
-
- If you are using PC-NFS v3.0.1 or above, then you may want to use
- the enhanced PC-NFS support that is included on this disk. Please refer
- to the README.NFS file in the NFS sub directory contained in the DeskTop
- directory for further details.
-
- 2.9.3 Using Sun PC-NFS v3.5.
-
- The Sun Resident Transport Module, RTM.EXE, must be loaded prior to
- invoking Windows with PC-NFS v3.5, or later. The /HEAP parameter must be
- specified with the RTM.EXE if more than 8 sockets are required. Each
- connection consumes 4Kb, so "RTM /HEAP 60" specifies the maximum 15 sockets.
-
- With PC-NFS v3.5, either RNMFILE.EXE or RNMNIS.EXE should be run
- after the RTM.EXE is loaded. RNMNIS.EXE should be run if you wish to use
- Yellow Pages (NIS), else use RNMFILE.EXE.
-
- 2.9.4 Using Sun PC-NFS v4.0.
-
- The DeskTop transport module MPCNFS4.DLL will only work with
- PC-NFS v4.0a.
-
- 2.9.10 Using PC-NFS v5 and Windows Sockets Interface
-
- When using PC-NFS v5 and above over the Windows Sockets interface
- the RLOGIN connection method does not work.
-
- 2.10 Using Ungermann-Bass Net/One.
-
- If you experience intermittent problems with version 16.4 you
- should update to version 16.5 or later.
-
-
- 2.11 Using Ungermann-Bass NETCI (INT6B) support.
-
- 2.11.1 If the network software you are using offers an INT6B interface
- for third party emulators, the Ungermann-Bass NETCI (INT6B) support in
- DeskTop should function correctly. Novell LAN WorkPlace for DOS is an
- example that has been validated.
-
- 2.11.2 Please refer to your networking software documentation to ensure
- that the support for INT6B is configured correctly.
-
-
- 2.12 Using Wollongong WIN/TCP for DOS or Wollongong Pathway Access for DOS.
-
- 2.12.1 To successfully run over Wollongong transports you may find that
- you need to increase the number of large packet buffers to be not less
- than 20. The large packet buffers can be configured by the Wollongong
- CUSTOM program. If the connections are still unreliable, you should try
- changing the size of the large packet buffers down to 400, or less.
-
- 2.12.2 You should ensure that the number of NETBIOS sessions (sockets)
- configured by the CUSTOM utility is set high enough. You need to
- configure 4 more than you actually require. For example, 16 will give you
- 12 connections. The effect of reaching the maximum number of connections
- is that your PC will hang.
-
- 2.12.3 You may experience problems with WIN/TCP if more than 5
- connections are used. This is due to a known problem in the WIN/TCP
- socket library.
-
- 2.12.4 Wollongong are investigating a problem where, under conditions of
- high activity, send operations can time out.
-
- 2.12.5 Whilst transferring large numbers of files using File Transfer
- with the FTP protocol, you may find the PC sometimes hangs, to avoid this
- situation you are advised to copy only a small number of files at a time.
-
-
- 2.13 Using the JSB Virtual Socket Library.
-
- This version of DeskTop installs version 3.0.3 of the JSB Virtual
- Socket Library (VSL).
-
- 2.14 Using MultiView DeskTerm and TekTerm.
-
- MultiView DeskTerm and TekTerm are not compatible with DeskTop 4.
- If you require the facilities of one of these programs, you will need to
- use a version of DeskTop 3.7.0 or earlier.
-
- 2.15 Using CGA Display Fonts.
-
- The CGA Display fonts provided at this release are only provided for
- compatibility with older systems. These fonts are not maintained as part of
- the main stream product and it is envisaged that they will not be supported
- in a future release.
-
- 2.16 Using a bus mouse with MCA.
-
- If you are using a bus mouse with an MCA system and you find that
- the mouse behaves erratically you can either,
-
- * Obtain a fix from Microsoft for the bus mouse driver.
- * Install a Logitech mouse driver.
- * Use a serial mouse.
-
-
- 2.17 Wyse60 Terminal Emulator
-
- The following are currently unsupported features of the Wyse60 terminal emulater.
-
- 2.17.1 Status line Problems:
-
- * Certain escape sequences to clear the host and local status
- lines are not supported.
-
- * If the Host Status line is programmed to blink with reverse
- the whole line will blink.
-
- * The 'draw rectangle' feature that SMIT (an RS6000 Configuration
- tool) uses, is not supported.
-
- 2.17.2 Mascot Desk Accessories are not supported when using the Wyse60 terminal emulater.
-
- 2.17.3 The Wyse60 terminal emulater does not support Scan Code Mode.
-
- 2.17.4 When using the Wyse60 terminal emulater the 'CTRL+F10' will not work correctly
- as this chooses the Menubar.
-
- 2.17.5 The Wyse60 terminal emulater does not use the Applications Default Font but can be
- changed once the terminal emulater is running.
-
- 2.18 Networks No Longer Supported
-
- The following Networks are no Longer Supported under DeskTop 4.
-
- Atlantic Axcess
- NCR Token Ring
- SCO XENIX-NET
-
- 2.19 Currently ICL Oslan is not supported at this release of DeskTop, to obtain further
- details regarding future support please contact JSB Technical Support.
-
-
-

-
-
- 3. HINTS.
-
- 3.1 Using different font families with Terminal Emulators.
-
- DeskTop no longer uses the AllowAllFonts keyword to allow fonts
- based on inappropriate character sets to be shown on the terminal emulator
- font selection dialog box. Because the Windows font common dialog box is
- now used throughout DeskTop, no assumptions are made about the
- appropriateness of fonts, and the user can select any available Windows
- font to be used with any DeskTop terminal emulator.
-
- You should be aware however that certain applications when running
- on certain terminals make assumptions about the character sets they are
- using for output, if this is the case you should refer to the font
- description shown at the bottom of the font selection dialog and ensure
- it matches the font required by the application.
-
- 3.2 Problems using Locus PC-Interface.
-
- If you experience connection problems with Locus PC-Interface,
- ensure that you read the PC-Interface release notes (or equivalent),
- regarding any limitations of EM2, the PC-Interface emulator, and the
- Network card you are using. Note that on a 3Com EtherLink II (3c503)
- card, shared memory must be disabled.
-
- If you experience problems of data loss or screen corruption when
- using PC-Interface and Host Support, you can turn on error checking to
- ensure an error free line. The file MVIEW.INI in the Windows directory
- should be changed in the following way. If you are connecting to a node
- named pcihost the changes will be made to the section headed
- [multiview-pcihost], ie.:
-
- [multiview-pcihost]
- servertunables=yes
- errorcheck=yes
-
- If you are using Windows 3.1, and you experience problems using
- a version of PC-Interface which is earlier than 4.0.2, we recommend you
- upgrade your PC-Interface software to 4.0.2 or later.
-
- 3.3 Using DeskTop as the Windows shell.
-
- If you experience problems using DeskTop as the Windows shell
- you should use Program manager as the shell and leave it iconized. The
- memory overhead in doing this is relatively small.
-
- 3.4 Problems using Locus TCP/IP for DOS.
-
- If you experience problems of data loss during periods of high
- data output you should configure the MLOCUS2.EXE TSR as follows.
- Determine where the TSR is loaded, this could be in AUTOEXEC.BAT or
- WINSTART.BAT, and add or change the command line arguments as shown below.
-
- MLOCUS2 /n512 /r512 /s512
-
- See the Reference section of the on-line help for further details on
- configuring this TSR network Module.
-
- 3.5 Configuring your host when printing.
-
- The Printing facility provided with DeskTop allows applications
- running remotely to be configured to print to printers attached locally
- to the PC and to allow local applications to print files remotely. You
- may need to consider the Host configuration when using this Printing
- facility with certain types of printer, notably the LaserJet family of
- printers. You should not experience problems with printers where text
- commands are used to drive the printer, PostScript for example.
-
- If you are experiencing problems with printing you will need to
- ensure that the Host is configured correctly for the type of data
- contained in the print file. For example, printers which use control
- characters protocols, such as LaserJet, you must ensure that all post
- processing is switched off.
-
- In general terms you should use the same commands to print the
- file as would be used to print the file normally, to a printer connected
- to the remote machine. Use any command line options required by the
- printer interface, or by the relevant printing command.
-
- Check with your system administrator to see if there are any
- special options available for the relevant printer interface. For
- example, some Host interfaces provide special graphics printing options
- which disable post processing automatically. Alternatively, you may
- be able to use the following sample command lines which are supported
- for SCO UNIX and UNIX V.4 systems. This would also disable post
- processing:
-
- lp -dprinter -o stty=-opost filename
-
- In this example, printer is the name of the destination printer
- to be used, filename is the name of the file to be printed. The -o is used
- to specify printer-dependent or class-dependent options for the print job.
- On both SCO UNIX and UNIX V.4 an stty option is provided to allow the
- printer to be set with any options valid for the stty command. In this
- case the -opost option is used to switch off post processing.
-
- If command line option is not supported, it may be possible to
- use the stty command directly on the printer device. For example with
- a device called "/dev/local_print":
-
- stty -a < /dev/local_print
-
- will list the stty settings used on the printing device.
-
- stty -opost < /dev/local_print
-
- will switch off post processing for the device.
-
- It is important to note however that this method will only
- continue to work whilst the device remains open. So it is best placed
- in the printer device interface file or implemented as part of the
- operating system boot time commands, eg "/etc/rc...".
-
- If you are in any doubt, consult your system administrator for
- details of suitable printing options for your system.
-
- 3.6 Host Support login shell.
-
- At this release of DeskTop it is not possible to make your first
- Host Support connection unless the login offers a shell style environment.
- If your normal login is a menu system for example, the Host Support will
- fail to connect.
-
- 3.7 Connecting to multiple nodes without DeskTop present.
-
- If you are connecting to multiple nodes without DeskTop
- running, you may see a dialog displayed to the effect that no more
- memory is available. This is a known problem with DeskTop and will
- be fixed in a future release. To circumnavigate this problem, leave
- DeskTop running, iconized if required, and invoke your applications
- as before.
-
- 3.8 Key mapping VT220 shifted function keys.
-
- The key mapping user interface allows you to map the VT220 shifted
- function keys. As these keys do not have a default value and have to
- be down loaded by the application, it is not possible for DeskTop to
- provide key mapping on shifted function keys. See defining nodes on
- the desktop, page 24 of the Configuration Guide.
-
- 3.9 Network configuration for FTP support
-
- Unlike Telnet and Rlogin protocols the FTP protocol which is now
- available within File Transfer needs the PC networking software to be
- fully configured in order to operate correctly.
-
- 3.10 FTP support in File Transfer
-
- File Transfer cannot be run successfully using FTP over the
- Locus transport. This is because Locus doesn't support all of the
- required socket calls.
-
- Considerable delays can be encountered when aborting a
- receive when using FTP. This is because, for various reasons, the
- FTP 'ABORT' command could not be implemented but only affected
- through seamlessly closing and re-establishing the session with
- the host machine. Note, this is only an issue with FTP receives.
-
- Problems will be encountered when trying to receive
- multiple files, any of which contain spaces in their names. Any text
- in the name before the space will be lost. This is only an issue
- with FTP receives.
-
- Some FTP servers may not support all of the non-mandatory
- FTP services required to allow file transfer to run using FTP.
-
- Leaving a connected File Transfer session for any
- considerable time may allow the session to time out. This is not
- an error but a feature of the remote FTP server.
-
- Some FTP servers will not allow logins using blank passwords.
-
- FTP can only be used if the remote node you wish to transfer
- to/from has been defined within DeskTop, at this time we do not support
- FTP using IP addresses.
-
- Aborting File Transfer when using the FTP protocol and quickly
- starting it again to connect to the same host, you may experience a small
- delay when the transfer is set to receive.
-
- On some TCP/IP Stacks the following error message will be received
- 'CANNOT FIND LOCALHOST ENTRY IN HOST FILE'. This can be overcome by ensuring
- your TCP/IP stack is configured correctly, or by adding your Internet Domain
- to your hostfile eg.
-
- MyPC.jsb.co.uk
-
-
- 3.11 DeskTop Icons
-
- After adding several Icons to the DeskTop you may experience Icons not being
- displayed, this is due to a lack of System Resources.
-
- **********************
-
- 4. KNOWN BUGS AT THIS RELEASE
-
-
- 4.1 FTP File Transfer
-
- If trying to transfer a file where the first three characters of the new
- file are the same as a local directory name, the transfer always fails.
-
- 4.2 Loading terminal emulator sessions from Outside DeskTop
-
- If a terminal emulator session is started from Program Manager, with the DeskTop not
- running it will cause two extra carriage returns to be sent. This can
- be overcome by ensuring that DeskTop is running.
-
- 4.3 POWERfusion for Windows
-
- POWERfusion for Windows has been tested, and is currently not working
- correctly, please contact JSB Support for latest information on this.
-
- 4.4 Problems with the Wyse60 terminal emulator
-
- 4.4.1 If an application sends an escape sequence to reverse the screen the
- local status line is also reversed.
-
- 4.4.2 If using escape sequences to enter text on to the Status Line,
- it will not be displayed until RETURN is pressed.
-
- 4.4.3 If Adding Text to the bottom host Status Line pressing the Shift+K
- causes it to disappear.
-
