  7. Welcome to the pre-release version of WinZip 5.5a for Windows/NT!
  8. With a few exceptions this version is functionally equivalent to
  9. the 16 bit version, but because it is a native Win32 application
  10. it does not run into the incompatibilities in Windows/NT's Windows
  11. emulation, multi-tasks better, and is faster than the 16 bit
  12. version (in particular unzip operations are noticeably faster).

  30.     If you received this version of WinZip in an archive, first
  31.     extract the files to a blank floppy.

  33.     Activate the Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu,
  34.     type A:SETUP, and press the Enter key.

  38.     This program requires Windows/NT 3.5 or later.
  39.     Some optional features require external programs.

  49.     * The "Uninstall" portion of the "Install/Uninstall" feature
  50.     * The File Manager Extension

  52. *** Notes ***
  53.  
  54.     * Since the Win16 and the Win32 versions look almost identical
  55.       an asterisk is displayed in the title bar of the Win32
  56.       version to make it easier to determine which version is
  57.       running.
  58.  
  59.     * The best way to add files with long names to ZIP files is
  60.       with the drag and drop interface.  The Add dialog box has a
  61.       few limitations, discussed below.
  62.  
  63.     * The current versions of all optional external archivers used
  64.       by WinZip are DOS programs and do not support long
  65.       filenames.  Therefore, WinZip will pass the the short 8.3
  66.       version of all long file and directory names to these
  67.       external programs.  Since normal 8.3 names are usually more
  68.       meaningful than the shortened versions of long filenames, it
  69.       is recommended you use standard 8.3 filenames when working
  70.       with external archivers.
  71.  
  72.     * Long Name Caution:  DOS and 16-bit Windows programs usually
  73.       have trouble with long filenames and files with spaces in
  74.       the name.  Therefore, it is recommended that you do not use
  75.       long filenames and files with spaces in the name if you plan
  76.       to work with these files from DOS.  For example, PKUNZIP
  77.       2.04g will extract the file "A Long Filename" as "A LONG F",
  78.       ignoring the extra characters.  To avoid this problem check
  79.       the "Store Filenames in 8.3 Format" checkbox in the Drop
  80.       and Add dialog boxes when adding files.

  83.     * This version of WinZip has not been extensively tested under
  84.       the Win32s subset.
  85.  
  86. *** Known Problems ***
  87.  
  88.     * There are some anomalies in how the Add dialog box handles
  89.       long filenames and files with blanks.  Note that the Add
  90.       dialog box is based on the standard Windows "multi-select"
  91.       open dialog box, so this behavior is common to _all_
  92.       applications that use this common dialog box.  The dialog
  93.       box shows the short form of long NTFS filenames with blanks,
  94.       but does not list 8.3 files with blanks (e.g. the filename
  95.       "nico mak computing.txt" is listed as "nicoma~1.txt" while
  96.       the filename "nico mak.txt" is not shown at all).  HPFS
  97.       filenames with blanks are never shown.
  98.  
  99.     * Some of the 16-bit Windows virus scanners listed in the
  100.       Program Location dialog box do not work or are not available
  101.       under Windows/NT.
  102.  
  103.     * When long filenames don't fit in dialog box fields they
  104.       should be abbreviated (and some dialog fields should be
  105.       enlarged).
  106.  
  107.     * In a few situations (e.g.  CheckOut) WinZip will use the
  108.       short 8.3 format name of a directory instead of the long
  109.       name even when it doesn't have to.  This is due to the
  110.       implementation of the Visual C++ getcwd() run-time library
  111.       function, and will hopefully be corrected in the next
  112.       version of the compiler.  If not, I will code around the
  113.       problem.

  134.     underscore at the end of the filename.  The underscore is
  135.     replaced with the appropriate character by the SETUP program.
