  50. 3.) Installation of the drivers
  51.  
  52.     a) Start the "Windows NT setup"-program of the group "main".
  53.     b) Wait a moment.
  54.     c) Open the menu "options" und select "Change System Settings".
  55.     d) Open the option box for "Displays" of the new window 
  56.        "Change System Settings".
  57.     e) In here scroll until the end and select "Others (Requires a 
  58.        disk from a hardware manufacturer)".
  59.     f) A new window "Insert Disk" appears and you are requested to
  60.        insert the installation disk "A:\". If necessary, the default 
  61.        selection can be overwritten.
  62.     g) The window "Select OEM Option" appears and you get a list of 
  63.        the supported miro boards with their resolutions and frequencies.
  64.        Select an appropriate resolution according to your board and monitor. 
  65.     h) Wait a moment.
  66.     i) The window "Change System Settings" appears again, indicating 
  67.        the selected driver at "Displays". Confirm by using the "Close" 
  68.        button.
  69.     j) If you already installed the drivers in former times you are asked
  70.       whether you want to install the former or the new drivers. Confirm 
  71.        the new installation by using the button "New".
  72.     k) A new window "Windows NT Setup" appears and you are requested to  
  73.        insert the installation disk. Confirm by using the "Continue" button.
  74.     l) Now you see the introduction menu of the setup-program. Leave  
  75.        the program now, e.g. by selecting the menu "Options" and "Exit".
  76.     m) Windows NT gives you the information that the new driver will 
  77.        only be effected after a system reboot.
  78.  
  79.     In case of a board with two drivers available (e.g. 256 and 16.7 
  80.     million colours) the procedure c) to k) has to be repeated for 
  81.     the second driver.
  82.  
  83.     If problems of the display driver occur when rebooting the system,  
  84.     you have the possibility to reselect the former configuration by 
  85.     using the option "last known good menu". If this doesn`t solve the 
  86.     problem you have to repair your system by using the Windows-NT-setup-
  87.     disk/-CD and the "Emergency Repair Disk". The "Emergency Repair Disk" 
  88.     should include a configuration with a VGA-driver "640x480, 16 colors" 
  89.     and your system has to run properly with this driver under all circum-
  90.     stances. So you can start trouble-shooting now. In order to repair 
  91.     your system only select the options "Inspect configuration registry" 
  92.     and "SYSTEM (System Configuration)".
  93.  
  94.     If you change the graphics board don`t forget to reconfigure your 
  95.     system on the VGA-driver before. So you get a properly running 
  96.     system after changing the board and you will be able to install 
  97.     the drivers for the new board. 
  98.  
  99.     The S3-drivers on the NT-Setup-CD don't run together with 
  100.     miroRAINBOW Win, miroMAGIC S4, miroCRYSTAL 32S, miroCRYSTAL 24S 
  101.     and miroCRYSTAL 16S.

  104. 4.) Change of resolutions and colour modes 
  105.  
  106.     a) Start the "Windows NT setup"-program of the group "main".
  107.     b) Wait a moment.
  108.     c) Open the menu "options" und select "Change System Settings". 
  109.     d) Open the option box for "Displays" of the new window 
  110.        "Change System Settings". 
  111.     e) Select the desired resolution from the list of the drivers installed 
  112.        for your board and your monitor. Miro now inserts the version number 
  113.        into the description string. Select the desired resolution for your 
  114.        board and monitor with the highest version number to avoid the 
  115.        installation of an old old driver or the use of an old installation
  116.        script. 
  117.     f) If the driver is not installed yet a new window "Windows NT Setup" 
  118.        appears and you will be requested to insert the installation disk. 
  119.        Confirm by using the "Continue"-button. 
  120.     g) If the driver has already been installed you will be asked whether 
  121.        you want to install the current or a new driver. Confirm the use 
  122.        of the pre-installed driver by using the "Current"-button.
  123.     h) Now you see the introduction menu of the setup-program again.  
  124.        Leave the program now ( e.g. by using the menu "Options" and "Exit").  
  125.     i) Windows NT gives you the information that the new driver will only 
  126.        be effected after a system reboot.

  129. 5.) Special hints concerning the truecolor driver 
  130.  
  131.     The truecolor-driver is created as an accelerated framebufferdriver 
  132.     in the flatmodel. At the moment, it only supports miro-boards that 
  133.     are equipped with 4 MB. As this memory is completely located into the 
  134.     address range of the PC this driver doesn't run together with ISA-
  135.     boards because the ISA-bus system includes a addressing restriction 
  136.     of 16MB an nomally these addresses are already reserved for the main 
  137.     memory in case of NT-computers.
  138.  
  139.     As a basic address of the framebuffer the driver presets the 
  140.     following 32-bit addresses:
  141.     - board for EISA-bus  : 07C0.0000 (hex)
  142.     - board for VL-bus    : FEC0.0000 (hex)
  143.     - board for PCI-bus   : FEC0.0000 (hex)
  144.     If the boards don't run with these addresses (e.g. as a result of an 
  145.     incomplete address decoding of your motherboard) the addresses can be 
  146.     overwritten by an entry into the registry. Repair your system by 
  147.     applicating the measurements described at 3) together with the VGA-
  148.     driver. Start the registry-editor REGEDT32.EXE of the \WINNT\SYSTEM32 
  149.     directory. Use its help-function for operating. Look for the key  
  150.

  157.     Select EDIT and AddValue with your mouse. Insert the ValueName
  158.     "FrameBufferBaseAddress" and the DataType "REG_DWORD". In the following 
  159.     menu-box insert a new address that will shurely work on your computer.   
  160.     After the confirmaton you will find the new inserted address beside 
  161.     data e.g. concerning resolution and colour-mode in the right window. 
  162.  
  163.     You can delete this value by indicating with the mouse and pressing 
  164.     the DEL-Key. Take care not to change or delete any other value - 
  165.     your system would not be able to run after a system-reboot!  
  166.  
  167.     One of the following versions of the installation disk will include a  
  168.     DOS-test-program that enables you to check a miro-board concerning 
  169.     available addresses.

  172. 6.) Association of the drivers with the various boards 
  173.  
  174.     - RAINBOW.SYS and RAINBOW.DLL   : for miro-Boards with 4 MB memory

  190. 7.) Delete drivers 
  191.  
  192.     Drivers that will no longer be used or that are out of date can be 
  193.     removed by reconfiguring with the Windows NT setup-program a different 
  194.     driver (e.g.: VGA Standard 640x480, 16 colors), rebooting the system 
  195.     and then deleting with the help of the file-manager at \WINNT\SYSTEM32 
  196.     the display-driver (extension: .DLL) and at \WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS 
  197.     the miniport-driver (extension: .SYS). From now on miro adds the 
  198.     file-time to the version number.
  199.  
  200.     After the installation of drivers with the option "Other..." there 
  201.     will exist several files OEMVIOx.INF (x=0,1,...) in the directory  
  202.     \WINNT\SYSTEM32. These are the renamed installation scripts of the  
  203.     current and the former installation disks. You should delete all of 
  204.     them except the file with the highest 'x' (the current installation). 
  205.     If you don't do so, drivers will be listed several times and by 
  206.     different installation disks and versions.
  207.  
  208.     Moreover the refering key should be deleted in the registry with the 
  209.     help of the registry-editor REGEDT32 (look at 4.) ). Look for the key

  221.     Select the key in the left window with your mouse and delete it with 
  222.     the DEL-key. Take care not to change or delete any other key - your 
  223.     system would not be able to run after a system-reboot!

  250. 9.) Hints concerning miroCRYSTAL 8S and miroCRYSTAL 16Si 
  251.  
  252.     The graphics boards miroCRYSTAL 8S and miroCRYSTAL 16Si are supported  
  253.     by the  Windows NT-included drivers for S3-boards. Therefor select the 
  254.     driver "S3 60Hz" respectively "S3 70Hz"in the SETUP-program. The 
  255.     following resolutions will be effected: 
  256.  
  257.      640 x 480, 256 colours, 31 kHz/60 Hz   38 kHz/72 Hz
  258.      800 x 600, 256 colours, 38 kHz/60 Hz   48 kHz/72 Hz
  259.     1024 x 768, 256 colours, 48 kHz/60 Hz   56 kHz/72 Hz

  261.     If the driver "S3 Default Refresh" will be selected, it configures
  262.     according to the DIP-Switches settings. Please refer to the manual 
  263.     belonging to the board.

  265.     The resolution 1280 x 1024 with 256 colours is not available 
  266.     with the miroCRYSTAL 8S, miroCRYSTAL 8S/2MB and miroCRYSTAL 16Si.

  269. 10.) If problems occur... 
  270.  
  271.     The miro Power Pack (miroMAGIC S4 and miroCRYSTAL 8S) and miroTWINFACE 
  272.     are not supported by the NT-drivers. You just can install drivers 
  273.     for the first board ("DOS-text/graphics") or you must remove the 
  274.     first board from your system and set the jumpers of the second board  
  275.     ("only HIRES-graphics") to declare it as the first board. Refer to the 
  276.     manual.

  278.     In case of problems with the VGA-DOS-box in fullscreen-mode you should 
  279.     ask your dealer or miro for an update of the BIOS-ROM.
