  1. ABOUT THIS FILE

  3. This file contains a very short desciription of the MetaEdit
  4. program, and the conditions for its use and distribtion.
  5.  
  6. ABOUT METAEDIT
  7.  
  8. MetaEdit is a multi-method CASE-tool which comes in three versions.
  9. This is the standard version, distributed as shareware. Please
  10. see the file USERMAN.WRI for more information on the other versions.
  11. MetaEdit requires MS-Windows 3.x in Standard or Enhanced mode to
  12. run. Use MS-Write to read the rest of the documentation. Installation
  13. is explained in USERMAN.WRI. For registration and the benefits of
  14. registering MetaEdit, please see REGISTER.WRI.

  16. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
  17.  
  18. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  19. before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  20. using it, you are expected to register within a certain period. 
  21. With registration, you get anything from the simple right to 
  22. continue using the software to an updated program with 
  23. printed manual.

  25. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  26. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  27. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  28. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  29. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  30. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  31. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  32. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  33. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  34. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  35. Shareware.

  37. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  38. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  39. whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  40. fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  41. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  42. has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  43. product, you don't pay for it.

  45. DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT

  47. Users of MetaEdit must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  48. "MetaEdit is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  49. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  50. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
  51. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
  52. consequential, which may result from the use of MetaEdit."

  54. MetaEdit is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  55. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  56. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  57. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  58. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  59. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  60. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  61. useful and find that you are using MetaEdit and continue to use
  62. MetaEdit after a reasonable trial period, you must make a
  63. registration payment of $75 (US) to MetaCase Consulting. The $75
  64. registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  65. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  66. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  67. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  68. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  69. being used at one location while it is being used at another.
  70. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  71. same time.

  73. Commercial users of MetaEdit must register and pay for their
  74. copies of MetaEdit within 30 days of first use or their license
  75. is withdrawn.  Site license arrangements may be made by contacting
  76. MetaCase Consulting at the address below.

  78. DISTRIBUTION

  80. Anyone distributing MetaEdit for any kind of remuneration must
  81. first contact MetaCase Consulting at the address below for
  82. authorization.

  84. This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  85. recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  86. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  87. MetaEdit immediately. (However, MetaCase Consulting must still be
  88. notified so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the
  89. latestversion of MetaEdit).

  91. You are encouraged to pass a copy of MetaEdit along to your
  92. friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  93. copy if they find that they can use it.  All registered users
  94. will receive a copy of the latest version of the MetaEdit
  95. system.

  97. Notice that the copy of MetaEdit can only be distributed as a whole,
  98. i.e. all files included in the compressed file must remain in the
  99. package. See the file "CONTENTS.LST" for the files in the package.
