  3. INSTALLING THE ENCORE DEMO
  4.  
  5. Installing Encore is easy.  You simply boot your computer and run 
  6. Encore's installer program.  In addition to the Encore application, you 
  7. can install sample music files and drivers for the Sound Blaster and 
  8. Media Vision Pro AudioSpectrum cards.
  9.  
  10. PLEASE NOTE- READ ME 2 contains a demo script - please read it 
  11. after installation to learn how to use Encore.

  14. settings and latest version addendum.

  17. MIDI setup
  18.  
  19. Although you can use Encore without a MIDI instrument, in order to 
  20. use the Encore demo with a MIDI instrument, you must configure the 
  21. software so that it can communicate properly with your hardware. 
  22. See the instructions below.

  25. INSTALLATION
  26.  
  27. By running the Setup program on the Encore Program Disk from 
  28. within Windows, you can quickly and easily install the Encore demo 
  29. and all related files.
  30.  
  31. The following section contains two separate installation procedures: 
  32. for Windows 3.1 (or Windows with Multimedia Extensions) and for Windows 3.0.
  33. After you install Encore, you must install the TrueType fonts included on 
  34. the demo disk in order to run the Encore demo.
  35.  
  36. Note:  For the following installation Microsoft Windows must 
  37. already be installed on your hard disk.

  39. INSTALLING ENCORE UNDER WINDOWS 3.1
  40.  
  41. To install Encore from Windows 3.1:
  42.  
  43. 1.    Run Windows.
  44. 2.    Insert the Encore Program Disk into your computer's disk drive 
  45. (A: or B:).
  46. 3.    Choose "Run" from the File menu of the Windows Program 
  47. Manager.
  48. The Run dialog appears.
  49. 4.    In the "Command Line" text box, enter A:SETUP (or B:SETUP if 
  50. the Program Disk is in drive B:).
  51. 5.    Click OK or press Enter to run the Encore Setup program.
  52. The Setup dialog appears.
  53.  
  54. The default drive and directory to which Encore will be copied are 
  55. displayed in a text box.  If you want to install Encore in a different 
  56. directory or drive, simply make the appropriate changes to the text 
  57. box.
  58.  
  59. Several installation options are listed in the box at the bottom of the 
  60. dialog.  These include installation of the Encore program files, MIDI 
  61. drivers, and sample music files.  Some options are pre-selected 
  62. (reverse highlighted) for installation (the Passport MIDI drivers will 
  63. automatically be de-selected on Multimedia PCs or PCs running 
  64. Windows 3.1 or later).  De-select any options that you do not want.

  66. 6.    Click OK and follow the on-screen prompts.
  67. A dialog appears that asks if you would like the Setup program to 
  68. create an Encore Program Group in the Windows Program Manager.
  69. 7.    Click Yes or press Enter to create an Encore Program Group.

  71. Now you just need to install the fonts before you run Encore.

  73. To install the Encore demo from Windows 3.0:
  74.  
  75. 1.    Run Windows.

  101. 8.    After the Encore Program Group is created, the Passport MIDI 
  102. Device Installer appears.  This enables you to install various drivers 
  103. for MIDI interfaces and sound cards.  MIDI drivers for the Passport 
  104. MIDI Transport, Roland MPU-401t and compatible interfaces, 
  105. Creative Labs' Sound Blaster, and Media Vision's Pro AudioSpectrum 
  106. are included on the Program disk.  There are also drivers for the 
  107. AdLib and FM synthesizers on the Sound Blaster and Pro 
  108. AudioSpectrum cards.
  109. 9.    Select the appropriate drivers and click Add.
  110. The selected drivers appear in the Installed list box.  These drivers 
  111. will also appear in Encore's MIDI Setup dialog when you run Encore 
  112. (the MIDI Setup item is on the Goodies menu).
  113. 10.    If you need to change the Port address or Interrupt number for 
  114. an installed device, select the device and click Setup.  When the 
  115. Setup Device dialog appears, change the settings and click OK.  
  116. Otherwise, you can leave the device set to its default settings.
  117.     Click OK to exit the Passport MIDI Device Installer.

  119. Now you just need to install the fonts before you run Encore.

  122. Fonts
  123.  
  124. There are four TrueType fonts included on the Encore demo disk:  Anastasia, 
  125. FretsA, FretsB, and FretsC.  You must install these fonts using the Fonts 
  126. applet in the Windows Control Panel.  (The Control Panel is typically found 
  127. in the Main Program Group in Windows.)  The Encore demo will not run without
  128. the fonts.

  131. MIDI setup
  132.  
  133. Although you can use Encore without a MIDI instrument In order to 
  134. use the Encore demo with a MIDI instrument, you must configure the 
  135. software so that it can communicate properly with your hardware.

  137. 1.    Open the Encore Program Group in the Windows Program 
  138. Manager (if it is not already open), and double-click the Encore icon 
  139. to run the program.
  140. 2.    Pull down the Goodies menu and choose the MIDI Setup item.
  141. The MIDI Setup dialog appears.
  142.  
  143. Ports
  144.  
  145. Encore can communicate with the MIDI world over one or two of 
  146. your computer's output ports.  This is good because it lets Encore 
  147. address sixteen MIDI channels over each port, effectively giving it 32 
  148. channel capability.  You can use both if you have two MIDI interfaces 
  149. or a dual port interface such as Music Quest's MQX-32M.
  150.  
  151. There are four drop down list boxes that enable you to make port 
  152. assignments.  The two top list boxes let you designate the output 
  153. port(s) of your interface as either Port A or Port B.  This dialog 
  154. determines which software port is connected to which of your 
  155. computer's hardware ports.  Encore's output can also be routed to 
  156. sound cards like Creative Labs' Sound Blaster and Media Vision's Pro 
  157. AudioSpectrum.
  158.  
  159. Below each of the output port list boxes is a check box labeled 
  160. "Transmit Sync".  Click this box to transmit MIDI sync messages on 
  161. that port.  Encore sends MIDI song position pointer and MIDI clocks.
  162.  
  163. The next list box, labeled "Record port" tells Encore which port is 
  164. connected to the MIDI controller with which you'll enter notes onto 
  165. your score.
  166.  
  167. Encore can play or record based on your computer's own internal 
  168. clock or on a MIDI song position pointer and MIDI clocks received 
  169. from an outside source.  If you'll be synchronizing your computer to 
  170. an external signal, you may want to keep the incoming sync signal 
  171. separate from MIDI data you're recording.  The "Receive sync port" 
  172. item lets you do this.

  174. Note:  If you are using an MQX-32M and selected the MPU-401 
  175. drivers during installation, Encore will sense the presence of the MQX 
  176. and offer a choice of MQX-32 Port 1 and Port 2 in the Port list boxes.
  177. Sync Source
  178.  
  179. The "Sync Source" radio buttons determine whether you'll use your 
  180. computer's clock or an external MIDI device as Encore's master clock.
  181.  
  182. If you won't be using an external MIDI sync source to control the 
  183. playback of Encore: Check Internal.
  184.  
  185. Your PC's internal clock will control Encore's playback speed.
  186.  
  187. If you do want to "slave" Encore's playback functions to an external 
  188. source: Check External.

  191. MIDI Thru
  192.  
  193. This section routes the flow of MIDI data from your master controller 
  194. through your computer and out the designated port.
  195.  
  196. This kind of software MIDI Thru is useful when you have both a 
  197. Master Controller (a keyboard or other MIDI controller) and a 
  198. separate sound generating module.  The MIDI output of your 
  199. controller should be connected to the MIDI input on the computer 
  200. and the MIDI output of the computer should be connected to the 
  201. MIDI input of your sound module.
  202.  
  203. Then, if you want to play your controller and have your sound 
  204. module respond to its MIDI messages, you have to turn on Encore's 
  205. MIDI Thru function.  This routes the MIDI data (generated by your 
  206. playing) through your PC and out to the sound module.
  207.  
  208. Click on the radio button for the port─either A or B─that will send 
  209. the MIDI data back to the master controller.
  210.  
  211. MIDI Thru data can always be sent on one specific port and channel 
  212. or be set to follow the current staff you are working on.  When a new 
  213. staff is selected, its assigned MIDI channel will be displayed in the 
  214. MIDI Thru button in Encore's main Edit window.

  216. Enter the MIDI channel number, from 1 to 16, to which your 
  217. controller is set.  When a dash appears in the text box, the MIDI Thru 
  218. data is sent out on all sixteen channels over both ports.

  220. You are now ready to use Encore. Please read the README2! file to 
  221. learn how to use the program.
