  18. When you start Event Viewer, the following error appears:
  19.  
  20.    The Eventlog service on the local machine is not started.
  21.  
  22. Then, after you start the Eventlog service from the Services section of
  23. Control Panel the following error message appears:
  24.  
  25.    Could not start the Eventlog service on \\<machine name>.
  26.    Error 1501: No event log file could be opened,
  27.    so the event logging service did not start.
  28.  
  29. CAUSE
  30. =====
  31.  
  32. This error only occurs when the Windows NT system drive is formatted for
  33. NTFS. When the Eventlog Service starts, it opens three log files in the
  34. %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG directory. If the system does not have the
  35. correct permissions, it cannot open and write the log files.
  36.  
  37. RESOLUTION

  40. For these files to be opened successfully, Read and Write permission in
  41. this directory must be granted to the Administrators group, the System
  42. account, or the Everyone group. Any one of these three enables the system
  43. to function normally.
