  19. Your serial mouse may fail to work under Windows NT. The mouse seems
  20. to be detected correctly by NTDETECT.COM, but the following
  21. description appears in Event Viewer's log:
  22.  
  23.    The source is mouclass description was could not locate the device
  24.    object for one or more pointer port devices.
  25.  
  26. CAUSE
  27. =====

  29. This problem is caused by the SERMOUSE.SYS driver. Device detection
  30. fails when the mouse is plugged into a 3rd-party serial port adapter
  31. that uses the Winbond chip. This problem occurs with any Combi mouse
  32. that has a serial number in the 3xxx range.
  33.  
  34. RESOLUTION
  35. ==========

  37. You can obtain a fix for this problem (for x86-based computers) by
  38. accessing CompuServe or Internet. The file you need to download is
  39. SERMOU.EXE, a self-extracting file.

  45. following directory:

  52. SERMOU.EXE is located in the WINNT forum in Library 2.

  54. Using SERMOUSE.SYS
  55. ------------------

  57. To use the new SERMOUSE.SYS file, perform the following steps:
  58.  
  59. 1. Rename the current SERMOUSE.SYS file in the SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
  60.    directory.
  61.  
  62. 2. Copy the new SERMOUSE.SYS file to the same location in Step 1.
  63.  
  64. 3. Shut down Windows NT and restart your computer
  65.  
  66. This fix is provided as is, and is not supported by Microsoft Product
  67. Support Services. Although this file was not made available in the
  68. recent update of Windows NT (U.S. Service Pack 1), a tested and
  69. supported version of this file will be included in the next update.
