  17. When you try to move, delete, copy, or rename a file whose name
  18. contains a trailing period (such as README.), you will receive the one
  19. of the following error messages.
  20.  
  21. If you are using File Manager:
  22.  
  23.    File Manager cannot move <filename and path>: The system cannot find
  24.    the file specified. Make sure the correct path and filename are
  25.    specified and the network is started.
  26.  
  27. If you are at a command prompt:
  28.  
  29.    The system cannot find the file specified file.
  30.  
  31.    -or-
  32.  
  33.    Could not Find <filename and path>.
  34.  
  35. CAUSE
  36. =====
  37.  
  38. Windows NT cannot handle filenames with trailing periods. The only
  39. known way that Windows NT allows a file to have a trailing period is
  40. if the file was named/created by a Macintosh. In this case, the
  41. Windows NT Advanced Server must be running, or has run, Services for
  42. the Macintosh.
  43.  
  44. Macintosh users can name a file with a trailing period. That file may
  45. then be copied to Windows NT Advanced Sever, but Windows NT Advanced
  46. Server will not remove the period, nor will the name translation
  47. process to 8.3 take care of the problem.

  52. The file should be renamed from a Macintosh, so that it does not
  53. contain a trailing period.
