  19. If a printer is attached to the serial port (COMx) of a system running
  20. Windows NT, the printer may eject blank pages or print garbage during
  21. the startup of Windows NT.

  23. CAUSE
  24. =====

  26. When you start Windows NT, NTDETECT gathers information on the
  27. hardware that is installed in the system. One of the functions that
  28. NTDETECT performs is a search for the pointing device (usually a
  29. mouse). In the course of this process, data is sent to the serial
  30. ports. This data may be interpreted by the printer as incoming
  31. information upon which to act. Depending on the baud rate setting and
  32. the particular printer attached, this may result in the ejection of
  33. printed pages with random characters or unprinted pages.

  38. To work around this problem, make sure that the power is off on the
  39. printer before you start Windows NT. After Windows NT is loaded, then
  40. turn the printer back on.

  45. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1
  46. and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this
  47. problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
  48. Base as it becomes available.
