  14. Changing computer names for Windows NT Advanced Server can only be
  15. done after the computer is synchronized.
  16.  
  17. To change the name of a Controller or Server for Windows NT Advanced
  18. Server, do the following:
  19.  
  20. 1. Create a new Server Account with Server Manager on the Controller.
  21.  
  22. 2. From the computer that needs the computer name changed, change the
  23.    name to the new name.
  24.   
  25.    The administrator will receive a message warning "Changing the computer 
  26.    name without the domain administrator first changing its name on the 
  27.    domain will result in domain accounts not being able to access or log on 
  28.    to this computer. Are you sure?"
  29.    
  30.    Choose Yes (if the computer account has been created on the Controller).
  31.  
  32. 3. Shut down and restart the Server with the name change.
  33.  
  34. 4. When you log on, you will receive the message "At least one service or 
  35.    driver failed during system startup." 
  36.  
  37.    The event log will show that netlogon failed because it "Failed to 
  38.    authenticate with the controller, a Windows NT Advanced Server for 
  39.    domain XXXX" Event ID = 3210. Data code C00000022
  40.    Status_Access_Denied."
  41.  
  42.    The administrator should start the Server Manager on the computer on
  43.    which the name was changed. The old computer name appears highlighted 
  44.    and the new name is still unavailable (grayed out). This is a browser 
  45.    problem and has nothing to do with netlogon failing to start on this 
  46.    computer.

  48. 5. Select the new computer name that is unavailable and select
  49.    Synchronize With Domain Controller. At this point, it will start
  50.    netlogon and synchronize the database with the Controller correctly
  51.    and the computer name will now be highlighted in Server Manager.

  53. 6. Delete the old computer (machine) account.
