  18. Dell 450M computers running Windows NT occasionally trap with a Trap 7F
  19. (opcode 6) and Trap 0x0a.

  23. Dell has confirmed that a problem exists with Dell 450Ms (BIOS revisions
  24. including A08, A10, A11, and A12) with the 16 megabyte memory modules and
  25. Windows NT.
  26.  
  27. Windows NT may trap occasionally with a Trap 7F (Unexpected Kernel
  28. Mode Trap) with an opcode of 6 (illegal opcode) or trap 0x0A. The
  29. traps appear to occur due to a BIOS problem on the Dell 450Ms. The
  30. problem can be resolved by either slowing the machine down to a slower
  31. speed (16 MHz) or by doing the following.

  33. To correct the BIOS problem on the Dell 450M, do the following:
  34.  
  35. 1. Start the computer with an MS-DOS floppy disk with DEBUG.COM.
  36.  
  37. 2. Run Debug and issue the following commands:
  38.  
  39.      - o 28 2b
  40.      - i 24
  41.      (you will see a value of 11)
  42.      - o 28 2b
  43.      - o 24 31
  44.  
  45. 3. Restart the computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL. Do not power cycle
  46.    the computer.
  47.  
  48. This setting stays in effect until the computer is turned back on after
  49. being turned off. At that time, you will need to perform the above steps
  50. again. The above changes introduce a wait cycle and turn pipeline mode on
  51. for the computer. There will be a slight performance degradation due to
  52. doing this, but it shouldn't be a noticeable change.

  54. NOTE: Dell is currently testing this fix and will provide a more
  55. appropriate way of correcting this problem soon. No time frame is available
  56. at this time. Contact Dell Computer Corp. for more information on this
  57. issue.
