  15. SYMPTOMS

  18. When installing Windows NT or Windows NT Advanced Server from a CD to a
  19. machine whose C drive is a SCSI drive with a DTC3290 SCSI controller, Setup
  20. may fail, displaying the following message:
  21.  
  22.     STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
  23.     The registry cannot load the hive (file):
  24.     \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
  25.     or its log or alternate.
  26.     It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.
  27.  
  28. CAUSE
  29. =====
  30.  
  31. During the installation process, Windows NT expects to read certain
  32. information from the SOFTWARE registry hive. Due to a hardware problem,
  33. this cannot be done.

  35. RESOLUTION
  36. ==========
  37.  
  38. This problem was not reproducable at Microsoft.  If you run into this
  39. problem, the following steps may help:
  40.  
  41.  - Use only hardware listed on the hardware compatability list (HCL).
  42.  - Ensure that the SCSI bus is properly terminated at both ends.
  43.  - Try a different SCSI cable.
  44.  - DTC has a firmware upgrade that fixes certain over-run problems.
