- The information in this article applies to:
-
- - Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
- - Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

-
- The AUTOEXEC.NT file incorrectly states that the AUTOEXEC.BAT file is
- not used to initialize environment variables under Windows NT. This is
- not true. The following is a section taken from the AUTOEXEC.NT:
-
- REM AUTOEXEC.BAT is not used to initialize the MS-DOS environment.
- REM AUTOEXEC.NT is used to initialize the MS-DOS environment unless a
- REM different startup file is specified in an application's PIF.
-
- When a User logs on, the Path and Set commands to add environment
- variables from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file are appended to the Windows NT path
- and environment for the Command Prompt and any Virtual MS-DOS Machines
- (VDMs). By default, AUTOEXEC.NT and CONFIG.NT are also read each time you start an
- MS-DOS application.
-
- NOTE: Country, Device, Dos, Fcbs, Files, Install, Loadhigh, Rem,
- Shell, and Stacks are all supported commands in CONFIG.NT. Any
- commands in CONFIG.NT that are not supported are ignored. Also, any
- device drivers which attempt to directly access hardware will not
- operate correctly in Windows NT.
