  16. SYMPTOMS
  17. ========

  19. A power break occurs and the UPS (uninterruptable power supply)
  20. service maintains the system for a short time. The UPS service
  21. times-out and terminates before power returns or the system can be
  22. prepared for shutdown. It also pauses the Windows NT Server service.
  23.  
  24. -or-
  25.  
  26. A power break occurs and power is restored before the battery runs
  27. out. However, the UPS service times-out and terminates, leaving the
  28. system vulnerable to the next power break (also pausing the Server
  29. service).
  30.  
  31. In both cases, the following events are logged:
  32.  
  33.    Event ID: 258
  34.    Source:   UPS
  35.    Type:     Error
  36.    Error:    The description for Event ID (258) in Source (UPS) could
  37.              not be found.
  38.  
  39.    Event ID: 3230
  40.    Source:   UPS
  41.    Type:     Warning
  42.    Error:    A power failure was detected at the server.

  44. CAUSE
  45. =====
  46.  
  47. Your UPS device does not have a low battery signal (or it was
  48. disabled) and, instead of handling this properly, the UPS service
  49. terminates prematurely. The problem is in the UPS service.
  50.  
  51. RESOLUTION
  52. ==========
  53.  
  54. In either case, you should contact Microsoft Product Support Services
  55. for an updated UPS.EXE file. If your UPS and Server services are
  56. currently paused, restart them by choosing Services from Control
  57. Panel.

  60. ======

  62. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT
  63. Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem was corrected in the latest U.S.
  64. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. For
  65. information on obtaining the Service Pack, query on the following word in
  66. the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):
