  15. Remote Access Service (RAS) for Windows NT has a new feature called
  16. Manual Dial. With this feature, you can manually enter AT commands
  17. directly to the modem. This is particularly useful when
  18. troubleshooting RAS modem problems. However, there are a few minor
  19. problems with this feature that may affect its usefulness.
  20.  
  21. You can enable this feature in RAS Phone by editing a phone book
  22. entry. In the RAS Phone utility, choose Advanced, and then choose the
  23. Modem button. Select the Enter Modem Commands Manually check box at
  24. the bottom. Now when you dial the phone book entry, you will be
  25. presented with a new terminal screen. You are now able to directly
  26. interact with the modem using AT commands.

  28. Possible Problems

  31. Cut\Paste commands:
  32.  
  33.    If you cut and paste modem commands into the terminal screen, they are
  34.    not sent to the modem. Only manually typed commands are accepted. This
  35.    can be troublesome if you are tweaking long initialization strings. You
  36.    need to type the entire command for each test.
  37.  
  38. 668\620 Error:
  39.  
  40.    If you are not connected when you choose the Done button, you will
  41.    receive the error message "All devices connected. Error 668: The
  42.    connection dropped."
  43.  
  44.    On your next dial attempt, you may receive the error message "All
  45.    devices connected. Error 620: There are no endpoints."
  46.  
  47.    This will be followed by the 668 error again.

  49.    1. Dial Phone Book Entry with the manual commands check box selected.
  50.  
  51.    2. Enter ATDT (phone number) in the terminal.
  52.  
  53.       The modems will connect.
  54.  
  55.    3. Choose Done to close terminal as normal.
  56.  
  57.       You will probably receive 620 error.
  58.  
  59.    If you dial a nonmanual entry from the phone book, it should work. You
  60.    may need to exit the RAS Phone utility to correct this behavior.

  62. Change Initial Speed bps:
  63.  
  64.    If you change the bps speed in the Modem Button Screen in RAS Phone,
  65.    you may receive garbage in the manual command terminal screen.
  66.  
  67.    For example, if you change from 38400 to 9600 bps, the manual command
  68.    terminal works but sometimes the system will not see connect string.
  69.  
  70.    More often, if it fails with 668 or 620 error for some reason, the
  71.    next dial command will get garbage from the modem on first screen
  72.    line.

  77. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1
  78. and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this
  79. problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
  80. Base as it becomes available.
