  18. The file allocation table (FAT) file system allows a maximum of 512
  19. files or directories in the root directory of a given partition. If
  20. this limitation prevents Windows NT Setup from copying the file NTLDR
  21. to the root of the bootable partition, you will be unable to complete
  22. the installation of Windows NT.
  23.  
  24. MORE INFORMATION

  27. If you attempt to install Windows NT to a machine that has a bootable
  28. partition that is formatted as FAT and has reached the limit of 512
  29. files on the root directory, Windows NT Setup will be unable to copy
  30. NTLDR to the root of drive C. If NTLDR cannot be copied to the root of
  31. drive C, you will receive the following error:
  32.  
  33.    Setup encountered an error while copying the file NTLDR.
  34.    The offending file will be skipped but setup may not be able
  35.    to correctly install Windows NT.
  36.  
  37. You will not be given the option to exit Setup at this point, and
  38. Setup will resume. When you are prompted to restart at the completion
  39. of the text mode portion of Setup, you will receive the following
  40. error as Windows NT attempts to load the graphical portion of Setup:
  41.  
  42.    Boot couldn't find NTLDR.
  43.    Please insert another disk.
  44.  
  45. To work around this problem and successfully continue the setup of
  46. Windows NT, perform the following steps:
  47.  
  48. 1. Restart the machine with an MS-DOS system disk.
  49.  
  50. 2. Delete one or more files from the root of drive C.
  51.  
  52. 3. Expand NTLDR._ from either Disk 1 of the Windows NT
  53.    setup floppy disks, or from the \i386 directory of the
  54.    Windows NT CD-ROM, to the root of drive C.
  55.  
  56.    NOTE: EXPAND.EXE is compressed on both the Windows NT setup
  57.    floppy disks and the Windows NT CD-ROM. You can, however,
  58.    use EXPAND.EXE from MS-DOS 6.0 or Windows 3.1.
  59.  
  60. 4. Remove the MS-DOS system disk and restart the machine, which
  61.    should bring the system back to Setup.
  62.  
  63. NOTE: Similar problems may occur with the file NTDETECT.COM.
  64. The four steps outlined above should also solve this problem.
