  22. SYMPTOMS

  25. The following error may occur when printing using the Hewlett-Packard
  26. (HP) print monitor over the DLC protocol:
  27.  
  28.    The server's configuration parameter irpstacksize is too small for
  29.    the server to use a local device. Please increase the value of this
  30.    parameter.
  31.  
  32. Irpstacksize specifies the number of stack locations in I/O request
  33. packets (IRPs) used by the server. It may be necessary to increase
  34. this number for certain transports, MAC drivers, or local file system
  35. drivers.
  36.  
  37. Another indication of this problem is that the status of the printer
  38. may be listed as "not available" in Print Manager.
  39.  
  40. RESOLUTION

  43. To correctly configure irpstacksize, use the Registry Editor
  44. (REGEDT32.EXE) to edit the following registry key:
  45.  
  46.    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\
  47.       Parameters
  48.  
  49. 1. Create a new value called "irpstacksize." The value must be of type
  50.    REG_DWORD.
  51.  
  52. 2. The default value is 4. Increase the value by 1 until the error
  53.    message stops. The range is 1 to 12. Each increment costs 36 bytes of
  54.    memory per work item (number of work items multiplied by 36 bytes
  55.    equals total memory cost).
