  11.  - Microsoft Windows NT operating system, version 3.1

  15. Windows NT supports most removable hard disks and magnetic-optical
  16. disk drives. These disks are treated as hard disks because they must
  17. be partitioned and they are assigned a drive letter. However, Windows
  18. NT does not support write-once disk drives.
  19.  
  20. Windows NT supports removable media subject to the following
  21. restrictions:
  22.  
  23.  - A removable hard disk can have only one primary partition. Extended
  24.    or logical partitions are not supported.
  25.  
  26.  - Windows NT supports only the Windows NT filesystem (NTFS) and
  27.    MS-DOS-compatible (FAT) file system on removable media.
  28.  
  29.  - The user cannot assign the drive letter for the device.
  30.  
  31.  - Removable disks are not supported in a fault tolerant manner.
  32.  
  33.  - You can install the Windows NT system files (the files contained in the
  34.    WINNT directory) on a removable disk. However, the boot partition and
  35.    associated files must be on a hard disk drive (fixed disk).
  36.  
  37.  - If the paging file is located on the device or if the device has
  38.    the NTFS installed, the media is locked until the system is
  39.    shutdown.
  40.  
  41.  - The FAT file system locks the media while it is in use and unlocks
  42.    it after approximately 10 seconds of inactivity.
  43.  
  44.       NOTE: Windows NT supports a 20.8MB "floptical" disk as a floppy
  45.       disk, not as a hard disk. Each write to a floppy disk is
  46.       performed on a write-through cache basis and you can remove a
  47.       floppy disk as long as the drive light is not on.
