  1. SYMBOLS.DOC was written in WordPerfect 5.1.  It can't be converted to DOS text
  2. because it has symbols that are not in ASCII decimals.

  4. The Keyboard files cannot be used in both WordPerfect 5.0 and 5.1 as they were
  5. written in 5.1.  And they only work within WordPerfect.  Their facility doesn't
  6. extend to other WordPerfect applications such as Office, DataPerfect, etc.

  8. All files in SYMBOLS.ZIP are in the Public Domain and you are encouraged to
  9. adapt them to suit your own requirements.  You may have to consult the
  10. WordPerfect manual for assistance.

  12. SYMBOLS.WPK has WPKs (Keyboard layout files) that augment WordPerfect's macro
  13. abilities beyond the Alt- and Ctrl-macros to a third dimension - "dead keys".
  14.  
  15. Dead keys are keys that can supply symbols or diacritical marks with a single
  16. stroke.  They can mnemonically change any character on the keyboard to any one
  17. of WordPerfect's over 1600 "Compose" characters and symbols.  You can, for
  18. example, arrange it so that hitting a dead key before pressing the $, will
  19. produce a Pound Sterling symbol (ASCII 156) instead.  Or follow a dead
  20. key-stroke with Q to produce ASCII 172 (1/4), H becomes ASCII 171 (1/2), etc.

  22. Since no keys are remapped, or reassigned, - all continue to produce exactly
  23. what the keytops show - there is no change whatsoever in the key layout.  You
  24. can continue to use all your Alt- and Ctrl-macros without any change.  Moreover
  25. you may never bother to remap a key again.  And, in any event, you can always
  26. flip back to WordPerfect's standard layout by hitting Ctrl 6 or your normal
  27. KEYB by Ctrl+Alt+F2.

  29. For anyone who needs an accent mark for French, German, Italian, Spanish, or
  30. Portuguese either occasionally or for typing text in one of those languages, a
  31. similar WPK, INTERNAT.WPK provides all the accents needed.  INTERNAT.WPK
  32. supplies them via the two dead keys, [ { } ].  If you need additional accent
  33. marks you can easily modify the WPKs included in INTERNAT.ZIP (INTERNAT.WPK,
  34. GERMAN.WPK and PORT[uguese].WPK) to supply all the diacritics employed by any
  35. Latin alphabet based language!  My wife, neophyte as she is, was able to
  36. convert GERMAN.WPK into TURKISH.WPK for typing in Turkish.  If she could any
  37. novice can.
