1. WinNAV - OFFICIAL RELEASE 3.00.62
=====================================
This is the official release of WinNAV, FlashPoint's Windows Navigator,
version 3.00.62. All existing beta copies, distributed in the files
NAV06A.EXE, NAV06B.EXE and NAV06C.EXE, and distribution files NAV###.EXE
(where ### = 061 and below) should be destroyed.
2. NEW FEATURES INTRODUCED IN THE 3.00.6x RELEASE SERIES
=========================================================
Release 3.00.62
---------------
This release introduces several new features, including four Excel like
tool/ribbon bars, for Navigation, Command and File Management functions
and an on screen Status or information bar.
The Command Bar provides ready access to command buttons, ten of which
may be configured by the individual user, a DOS/Windows command prompt
box that allows direct access to a DOS style command line and instant
recall of previous command lines (even from previous Windows sessions),
and preassigned buttons which access additional WinNAV copies, DOS
command windows and WinNAV's Launch Menu and Run Task dialog panels.
The Navigation Bar provides a dropdown directory list, which at a push
of a button can be switched between global system, local or "Allias"
directory listings; and provides additional buttons for invoking WinNAV's
Local and Global Explore dialog panels, to toggle WinNAV's various
display modes and zoom/restore windows.
The File Management Bar provides multiple buttons for one click access
to many basic file management functions, including copy, delete, rename,
print and associate applications to file types, open (edit), load (launch),
run task functions, and instant access to external user assigned editors
and viewers, and detailed file information.
The Status provides instantaneous help information when the user points
to or selects a particular menu or tool bar item.
In addition, WinNAV has added many new features and enhancements, including
the capability to adjust screen font sizes for all list, edit, view and
status window displays, the ability to delete all file types including
hidden, system and read only protected files, a new change file
attribute tool; enhanced search capabilities which allow exclusive file
type searches accross every drive accessible to your system.
This version has been coded to run under future releases of Windows 3.1,
and should not require additional user configuration or upgrades.
Release 3.00.61
---------------
This release introduced a new 3-D/graphics format and interface
similar to PC-Tools/Shell, a batch print utility, utilities to view
files within archives (double click left mouse or press return key on
selected file in archive directory when Quick View window active),
full support for the ARC, PKARC, LHARC, LHA and PKZIP DOS utilities
as well as SCAN and CVT, popup track menus (click right mouse button
on list or view windows), 36 user defined function keys, the initial
MS Windows online help system, internal copy functions which will
create directories if they don't already exist, add/make directory
function, global searches by file date and size, drive and directory
statistics, and much more.
3. WARNING TO CURRENT WINNAV USERS
===================================
Changes in 3.00.62
------------------
Release 0.62 has divided the old WINNAV.INI file sections into several
new "INI" style files. This may require moving some of your old
WINNAV.INI sections to the new file manually through the use of Windows
Notepad and Clipboard, should you wish to preserve your current
configurations (e.g., launch menus and command list, alias directories,
etc.) -- this should not be as difficult as it may first seem since
all sections may be moved in blocks.
The following indicates which sections must be moved, and those which
remain in the WINNAV.INI file.
OLD WINNAV.INI NEW "INI" STYLE
SECTION FILE NAMES
-------------- -----------------
[WinNav] WINNAV.INI
[Launch Extensions] WINNAV.INI
[Pack] WINNAV.INI
[Run Buttons] WINNAV.MNU
[Explore] WINNAV.EXP
[Alias Dir] WINNAV.GRP
[Launch Main Menu] and
all user launch menus... WINNAV.LAU
See the following section entitled "Advanced Configuration Instructions"
which identifies all new sections and section keywords, and explains how
to install same.
Changes in 3.00.61
------------------
Release 0.61 of WinNAV adopted a new format for the [Run Buttons]
section of the WINNAV.INI file (now located in the WINNAV.MNU file).
Therefore, those presently using WinNAV 3.00.60 or a previous release
must reinstall any existing custom Run button settings -- the good news
is that they can now be installed directly from the "Action:Run Task"
dialog panel.
This was required as a result of 0.61 implementation of 36 user defined
function key combinations. The first 12 keys (the F1-F12, Shift+Alt
combinations) invoke the same applications as appear in both the Run Task
dialog panel and the popup "User" menu; these are identified in the
[Run Buttons] section of the sample WINNAV.INI file by the LB1-LB12
keywords.
The remaining 24 user defined function key combinations are invoked
by the Control+Alt+Function Keys (LB13-LB24), and the Shift+Control+
Alt+Function Keys (LB25-LB36). These are also setup using the
"Action:Run Task" dialog Panel.
4. SHAREWARE DISK VENDORS AND BBS SYSOPS (READ WINNAVB.TXT)
============================================================
Shareware disk vendors, BBS Sysops and other non-individual distributors
must read the file WINNAVB.TXT, for instructions and restrictions on
distribution of non-registered copies of WinNAV.
5. QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS
============================
New users may simply copy the following files to their main
Windows directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS):
WINNAV.EXE The WinNAV application
WINQPRT.EXE The WinNAV print module
FPRES.DLL A dynamic link library used by WinNAV
and WinQPrt.
FPSTR.DLL A dynamic link library used by WinNAV
and WinQPrt.
WINNAV.HLP A WinNAV Windows help file
WNLIST.EXE A DOS text file view/list utility used
by WinNAV for viewing extracted archive
files (after selecting same from the
Quick View directory list). Other third
party view utilities may be substituted,
e.g., PCTools 7.0's VIEW.EXE native format
file viewer works quite well as a
replacement viewer for both normal and
WinNAV extracted pack/archive files.
WNVARC.COM A utility to extract and load a file
within an ARC formatted archive, for
viewing. Supports/requires ARC.EXE.
WNVPKA.COM A utility to extract and load a file
within an ARC formatted archive, for
viewing. Supports/requires PKXARC.COM.
WNVLZH.COM A utility to extract and load a file
within a LZH formatted archive, for
viewing. Supports/requires LHARC.EXE,
or LHA.EXE (renamed to LHARC.EXE).
WNVZIP.COM A utility to extract and load a file
within a ZIP formatted archive, for
viewing. Supports/requires PKUNZIP.EXE.
ARC2EXE.COM Utilities used to convert ARC and PKARC
PKA2EXE.COM archive files to self extracting *.EXE
files -- requires the appropriate DOS
utilities distributed with ARC or PKARC
WINNAV.INI Sample WinNAV configuration files,
WINNAV.EXP containing default setup information, and
WINNAV.GRP additional instructions on advanced
WINNAV.HST configuring of WinNAV for your own use
WINNAV.DIR
WINNAV.LAU
WINNAV.MNU
WINNAV.CRD Sample Windows cardfile used by the
sample Command Bar user button setup
CURRENT USERS SHOULD NOT COPY THE NEW WINNAV.INI SAMPLE FILE OVER THEIR
EXISTING WINNAV.INI FILE. Doing so will destroy all existing custom
configuration information.
All *.DLL and *.INI files for WinNAV (and any Windows application for
that matter) must be copied to Windows' main or system directory, or at
least a directory identified in the DOS "PATH=" statement.
In addition, the following third-party shareware applications should be
located in a subdirectory that is identified in your DOS "PATH=" statement
in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
PKZIP.EXE These are used for ZIP archive functions,
PKUNZIP.EXE and are included in the PKWare
ZIP2EXE.EXE distribution archive.
PKZIPFIX.EXE
ARC.EXE These may be used for ARC archive, and
MKSARC.EXE included in the SEA ARC distribution
archive.
PKARC.COM These may be used for ARC archive, and
PKXARC.COM included in the PKWare PKARC distribution
PKSFX.PGM archive.
LHARC.EXE This is used for LZH archive functions,
and is included in the
LHARC distribution archive.
SCAN.EXE This is used for the virus scan functions,
and is included in McAfee's Virus Scan
distribution archive.
CVT.COM These are used by the convert archive
CVT?????.??? format functions, and are included in
Starling's CVT-22 distribution archive.
These third-party shareware applications, and utilities may be downloaded
from most local bulletin board systems (BBS), CompuServe and GEnie.
6. ADVANCED CONFIGURATION INSTRUCTIONS
=======================================
There are several new settings, keywords and sections that have been
added to WinNAV's "INI" style configuration files, and which are not
detailed in its user guide.
Setting Font Sizes, Tool Bar and Directory Displays
---------------------------------------------------
The user may manually edit the WINNAV.INI file's [WinNAV] section to
customize the size of the fonts used in WinNAV's list, view and static
bar windows, by adding the following keywords together with the desired
font height.
[WinNAV]
.
.
.
ListPoint=8
ComboPoint=8
EditPoint=8
StaticPoint=9
TreePoint=8
The following new keywords are set internally to recall the previous tool
bar and Navigation Bar directory display; these are set in WinNAV through
the use of popup menu items and tool bar buttons
CmdBar=1
CtlBar=1
KeyBar=1
StatusBar=1
CBListMode=2
Command Bar User Buttons
------------------------
The WINNAV.MNU file contains the [Run Buttons] section from previous
versions' WINNAV.INI file, and adds a new [CmdBar Buttons] section which
is used to configure the ten (10) user buttons appearing on the Command
tool bar. These buttons are set through the use of the "Define/Modify"
user command bar button dialog panel which is accessed by clicking on the
last push button appearing to the right of the Command Bar.
The default button settings, in the sample WINNAV.MNU file, are as follows:
[CmdBar Buttons]
CB1=Windows Write, ., write.exe, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1,
CB2=Windows Notepad, ., notepad.exe, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1,
CB3=Windows Calculator, ., calc.exe, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1,
CB4=Windows Solitaire, ., sol.exe, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1,
CB5=Windows Calendar, ., calendar.exe, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1,
CB6=Windows PaintBrush, ., pbrush.exe, 0, 3, 0, 0, 0, 1,
CB7=Personal Desktop - Clock / Calendar / Cardfile / Reversi Utilities, ., calendar.exe, 0, 1, 1, 1, 0, 1, cardfile.exe, clock.exe, reversi.exe
CB8=Windows Terminal, ., terminal.exe, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 1,
CB9=Windows Clock, ., clock.exe, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1,
CB10=Windows Cardfile, ., cardfile.exe, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1,
The User Editor Menu Item
-------------------------
If the user wishes to invoke a different Editor (invoked from the
Action/Editor popup menu) or a different Print utility (invoked by the
File/Print popup menu) the following keywords and application strings may
be added to the WINNAV.INI file [WinNAV] section:
Editor=C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE
Print=C:\WINDOWS\WINQPRT.EXE
The application drive, path and names can be changed as needed by the user,
thus
Editor=WRITE.EXE
will load Microsoft Windows Write as the Action Editor.
