- The trouble with diskettes is that they don't match. I mean, come on, if
- they can make it so that you can play cassettes through a car compact
- disk player, or visa versa, then they should be able to let 5 1/4 inch
- disks read 3.5 inch disks.
-
- Another problem is data transfer. Let's say you want to go from an IBM
- PS2 with a 1.4 meg 3.5 inch disk drive and a 360K 5 1/4 inch disk drive,
- to an IBM PC 8088 with a 360K inch disk drive. No problem, you think I
- am wasting your time, right? Well, what if you have 6 diskettes full of
- data in the 3.5 inch format, but need to get them to the 5 1/4 inch
- format. That's a lot of typing. I mean you would have to copy and delete
- each file, and try to somehow optimize the way in which you copied,
- making sure not to leave precious 5 1/4 inch disk space free.
-
- Well, what you need to get is FILL30. It handles the copying, deleting,
- logging, and formatting whenever you do such a move. Included, as a
- special bonus, is an optimizer that will copy files in the most
- efficient manner.
-
- USE: FILL30's documentation is frightening. So frightening, that many
- people will destroy the program before they give it a good shake.
- See, the documentation is jumbled together; running from one point
- to another without a common thread. The only saving grace, for me,
- was the menu interface.
-
- Offering three operation modes (command line, environment set, and
- menu interface), FILL30 is sure to please any customer. The actual
- features that you have to choose from range from deleting the
- copied file, to logging all the files that you have copied. All the
- features are easily controlled by the operation modes.
-
- A typical FILL30 situation occurs at my home very night: I run a
- part time BBS that allows people to call and download the latest
- reviews, and reviewed programs, a great idea, but I also put
- programs that I receive from outside sources (authors, users
- groups, etc.). No problem, right? Wrong. I get programs on all
- sorts of disks that must be converted to 5 1/4 inch 360K. So, I use
- FILL30 to move the 1.4 megabytes on my 3.5 inch to the 5 1/4 inch.
- I also use it to move from the 1.2 megabytes on the high density 5
- 1/4 inch to the 360K double density 5 1/4 inch.
-
- You have The Brooklyn Bridge or something? Why else would you need
- this? If you collect software by the floppy disk full, this program
- could save itself in floppy savings. Let's say you have 100 disks
- of programs that you are saving for a rainy day, or that local BBS,
- but you want to make sure that 100 disks are needed. You flip
- through disk after disk, and all you find is 10K free here, 20K
- free here, and an occasional 30K; not much of anything. Tell you
- what you should do, dump all those files to your hard drive, mass
- format your floppies, and try again. I can personally guarantee
- that the program will eliminate the need for at least 10 disks!
-
- A distant voice cries out, "pitfalls for sale...get your cheap
- pitfalls." Yes, of course, almost every program has shortcomings.
- FILL30 is no exception. Starting with method of operation, we see
- that FILL30 offers three different ways of controlling its power,
- but none help each other out. Like let's say you choose the menu
- method. WHy doesn't the program spit out a little batch file, or
- set command, so that you can take advantage of the other methods?
- How about when you are copying the files? The program lets you
- format a new disk while copying, but you can only use FORMAT from
- DOS. Why can't you use QDR or FOMRQ?

- FILL30 exemplifies what quality programming should be. Taking into
- consideration all user levels, without constricting any of them, is truly
- a gift. The program is powerful, though better documentation would help!
