- Vol 1, Issue 1 MicroSource Digest April, 1989
-
-
- This is the premiere issue of a new media offering. For the first
- time, we are directing information to the SysOps and the Users of
- Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). First, let us describe what this newspaper
- is not intended to be. It is not a listing of Bulletin Boards in the
- area. It is not a sales tool for software, or hardware (although ads may
- be acceptable). It is not a judge and/or jury which will make a
- determination of the "best" software or hardware.
-
- What is this newspaper attempting to do? A great question, and we'll
- try to answer it. It will review the existing, and proposed BBS software,
- both for the SysOp, and the User. With your help and feedback, it will
- present tips and shortcuts relating to Board software, which, hopefully,
- will make the Users' excursion through a new BBS easier, and much more
- rewarding.
-
- We will critique some of the Shareware, and Public Domain (PD)
- software. There will be regional Blackboards listing important events in
- your area, including Club meets and Special Interest Group sessions.
- Also, with the help of hardware manufacturers and software developers,
- we'll be able to provide information on the new hardware and software
- coming to the consumer. How about a rating list of the software available
- on your local BBS?
-
- If this newspaper is to be useful to you, the SysOp, or User, you will
- have to tell us what you want to read. This is an open solicitation for
- articles, comments and letters. If you are using a particular PD or
- Shareware product which has proven helpful to you, let us know about it,
- and we'll share it with all our readers. Send us your comments and
- criticisms, both positive and negative, and we will print the best ones.
-
- Send your input to:
- MicroSource
- P.O. Box 381
- Wood Dale, Il. 60191
- or, via our BBS at:

- A Micro Review
-
- This month, we will look at Clark Development's PCBoard BBS Software.
- The software is currently running under variations of three versions.
- Version 10 is PD software, and still available for download from your
- local BBS. Version 12.1a is the last version, and currently used by many
- Boards who have not upgraded to version 14.1, the latest available from
- the developer.
-
-
- We will confine our discussion to version 14.1, as the previous ones
- provide a similar interface to the User. Within the version are three
- categories of the software. The first is the Standard model, handling one
- incoming phone line. The second is the Deluxe model will support a single
- User, and will interface with "doors". The Enhanced model is "multi-
- user", enabling a Board to answer more than one phone line at a time.
- Simultaneous use by multiple callers allows the inter-nodal chat mode to
- be activated, and conversations between callers are possible. Multi-node
- models are available for 3, 6 and unlimited nodes.
-
- The Main Menu gives the User access to the BBS functions. We'll give a
- short explanation of each function:
-
- A - Abandon a conference. Entering 'A' to a Conference Command prompt
- bring the User to the Main Board Command prompt.
-
- B - List Bulletin Menu. Brings the Bulletin Menu to the screen, and
- you are prompted to enter the Bulletin number to view.
-
- C - Comment to SysOp. Allows you to leave a private message to the
- SysOp, which can be viewed by the writer and the SysOp only.
-
- D - Download a file. Puts the User into the download sequence. If the
- User has not previously selected a transfer protocol (see T,below)
- The software will ask the User to select a transfer protocol for
- THIS transfer only. After selecting the transfer protocol, the
- User is prompted to enter the filename to be downloaded.
-
- E - Enter a message. Puts the User into the message base. The User is
- first asked to enter the receiver's name. A C/R alone will make
- the message public (available to all). The User is then prompted
- to enter a subject. If a C/R alone is entered, the User will be
- returned from the message base to the Main Board Command prompt.
-
- F - File Directories. Entering 'F' at the Main Board Command prompt
- will display the file directory, and prompt the User to enter a
- directory number, (V)-View an .ARC file, which lists all the files
- within the .ARC, (D)-Download which puts the User into the
- download function (see 'D', above for detail), (L)-which re-Lists
- the file directory. Entering C/R alone will put the User back to
- the Main Board Command prompt.
-
- G - Goodbye. Entering 'G' at the Main Board Command prompt will allow
- the User to exit from the BBS, and cause the BBS to hang up the
- phone line, and re-cycle the software to await the next caller.
-
- H - Help Menu. Gives a help menu of the functions, similar to this
- list Entering '?' will give the same result.
-
- I - Initial Display. - Re-displays the Initial Welcome screen.
-
- J - Join a Conference. Displays the conference menu and the prompt:
- "Enter the Conference number to join (Enter)=none?" You may then
- enter the number of the conference you wish to join, or C/R, which
- will bring you back to the Main Board Command prompt.
-
- K - Kill a message. Entering this letter will display the prompt:
- "Enter the Message # to Kill (Enter)=none?" You may delete a
- message addressed to you (Receiver only), or a message which you
- have previously entered. Entering C/R will bring back the Main
- Board Command prompt.
-
- L - Locate Files. Allows you to search for a file by specific name, or
- through the use of "wildcards" (? and/or *), a list of similarly
- named files. For details of "wildcards", consult your DOS command
- manual.
-
- M - Mode change. By entering this letter, you can toggle between
- graphic and non-graphic display modes. The BBS software will
- remember your last status, and start there when you contact the
- Board next time.
-
- N - New Files. Displays a prompt indicating your date of last visit,
- and asks if you want to change that start date. The BBS software
- will display all files (to which you have access) since the
- entered date, based upon your request for all or a specified
- directory. This command allows you to scan any or all new files
- which have been posted to the Board since your last visit.
-
- O - Operator page. Causes the Board's computer to generate an audible
- tone, indicating to the SysOp that you wish to chat with him(her).
- The system will wait thirty seconds for the SysOp to respond. If
- no response, the User is returned to the Main Board Command
- prompt.
-
- P - Page Length. Lets you view the length of the page displayed, and,
- if necessary, change it. This page length(number of lines of data
- to be displayed on your screen) is used whenever data is sent from
- the BBS to you. This includes any news, menu, file list or other
- type of display screen.
-
- Q - Quick message scan. Produces a screen display, based upon your
- entry of a starting message number. This display includes all
- following message numbers for which you have access. The data
- displayed includes message number, from whom, to whom and the
- subject title.
-
- R - Read Messages. Puts you into the message base, where you may
- specify a message number, messages left by you, messages left for
- you, any messages left since your last read message number and
- whether you want to display messages non-stop. Also, adding a + or
- a - after a message number will force a forward or reverse scan.
-
- S - Questionnaire menu. Displays the questionnaire menu, and prompts
- you to enter a questionnaire number, or C/R to return to Main Menu
- Command.
-
- T - Transfer Protocol Change. Allows you to set or change the transfer
- protocol used for file downloading. A menu list of available
- protocols will be displayed, and these are the only acceptable
- entries. The Board will store the entry, and use this protocol
- until changed.
-
- U - Upload a file. This command will send you into the uploading
- sequence. You will then be prompted for additional information,
- the file name and a description of the file you intend to upload.
- After you enter the file name to be uploaded, the Board software
- will search the BBS file directories to determine whether the file
- already exists in the directories, and, if found, will notify you
- of the existence, and return you to the Main Board Command prompt.
-
- V - View your settings. Allows you to review your information, as
- saved in the BBS files. This includes your protocol, last message
- read, page length, number of uploads and downloads, etc.
-
- W - Write user information. This allows you to change some of your
- User file information, such as city and state, password, phone
- numbers, etc, if the SysOp has set the Board parameters to allow
- User changes.
-
- X - Xpert mode toggle. By entering this letter, you toggle between
- expert mode, and novice mode. In expert mode, some of the menus,
- including the Main Menu, are not displayed, and only the prompt
- lines for those displays are shown. Once a User is exposed to a
- Board, and the particular software, the entries are apparent and
- memorized, and stopping their display speeds up the Board
- activities.
-
- Y - Scan Messages. Allows you to scan specified message bases, and
- lists the message numbers of messages for, and from you.
-
- Z - Zippy scan. By entering this letter the software will scan the
- specified directories for indicated text, which may include wild
- cards. File names and descriptions are searched for a match, and
- displayed.
-
- There are other capabilities which are reserved for the SysOp, and the
- routine maintenance of the Board. Two additional User commands are
- available on some Boards. "OPEN" and "DOOR" are provided to enable the
- User to access additional features, such as games, download protocols,
- statistics, etc. These are features which the software developer has not
- included in the package, and were developed elsewhere, and linked into
- the BBS. This description of the PCBoard system is, admittedly, somewhat
- novice-oriented. The information is offered to help the newcomer to
- BBSing, but it may allow the seasoned User to understand a Command which
- has not previously been tried.
-
- For the SysOp and potential SysOp, PCBoard presents some excellent
- features. There is the capability of ANSI color graphics, in addition to
- ASCII screens. There are over 100 User levels available, each with its
- own set of data screens in both ANSI & ASCII. Nine conferences can be
- configured, and each may operate as a "mini bbs", with its own unique
- file directories and bulletins. Each User has access to a conference
- based upon individual parameters, as access is not level dependent.
-
- Active bulletins, or informational items can be displayed, at the
- user's discretion, in either ASCII or ANSI, up to a maximum of 99. also,
- up to 99 main file directories can be utilized, again, in either color or
- mono. Callers can be allotted a specified period of daily access time,
- which is assigned on the basis of level number, as is the maximum
- allowable number of download bytes. Depending upon the suffixed version
- purchased, multi-nodal support may be available, and inter-nodal chats
- can be activated.
-
-
-
-
- It would seem, by visiting BBSs around the country that PCBoard
- software is the most prevalent. Whether that is indicative of its
- abilities, and ease of operation, is open to debate. We would like to
- hear from you regarding this question. Please indicate whether you are a
- SysOp, and if you are using PCBoard software, or a User of BBSs running
- PCBoard software. We will publish some of the responses in a future
- issue.

- Source Info
-
- Recent shareware releases include:
-
- PC881.ARC An income tax system, including many
- supplemental forms. Integrated, so a number
- entered in its proper place on one form will be
- propagated to its proper place on all affected
- forms.
-
- AMTAX88.ARC Another income tax system, including most
- necessary supplemental forms. Allows you to go
- directly to a supplemental information form
- from the main 1040, A, B, C or D form. Prints
- out all these supplemental documents when the
- main forms are printed.
-
- Using either of these packages, or a commercial version, such as
- TurboTax, will ease the burden of tax preparation. One of these packages
- can be used to supplement your income by preparing the returns of others.
- But, be aware of the IRS regulations governing Federal tax preparers.
- Some other new software making the rounds include:
- AIM21.ARC A Stock Market Investment Program.
- RE-MANAG.ARC A Real estate management system.
- STATEMEN.ARC A statement printing system.
- STREET.ARC Map your town, and distance between locations.
- TDRAW310.ARC An excellent ANSI screen making utility, TheDraw.
- ANSILTR2.ARC Some additional fonts for TheDraw.
- PKZ090.EXE The latest PKware archiving utility (.ZIP).
-
- Coming Attractions
-
- The next issue will contain an article on the latest protocols,
- including the constantly updated Z-Modem, J-Modem and batch versions of Z
- & J. Also new protocols which aren't generally available to date.
- Meanwhile, keep BBSing, and let us hear from you. We know that there are
- many frustrated authors out there who can contribute something to every
- one of us.
