  22. I am the author of the Shareware program, PC - GENERAL LEDGER, a
  23. simple but reasonably powerful accounting general ledger and
  24. check printing program.

  26. I found your Programmer's Guide disk to be very helpful and
  27. interesting.
  28.  
  29. I thought I would pass along a couple of thoughts, ideas, and my
  30. experiences with the Shareware concept.
  31.  
  32. I've been attempting to use that distribution method since last
  33. summer with very marginal results until recently.
  34.  
  35. The program was initially written and developed about a year and
  36. half ago for a couple of custom installations in the local area.
  37. I then decided to try out the Shareware concept. I sent 'press
  38. releases' to several magazines as well as copies of the disk to
  39. about 15 of the larger User Groups.
  40.  
  41. Only Dr. Dobbs printed anything (September issue) and I got a
  42. couple of orders ($50) from that. I eventually got about 150
  43. names and addresses from the bingo card. I sent an offer to
  44. those people for a free copy of the program if they sent a disk
  45. and prepaid mailer. For $10, I would provide the disk. I also
  46. suggested that they immediately send $50 to become a registered
  47. owner. I got about 25 disks and/or $10, but no $50 checks. At
  48. most, only one or two of the 25 ever became registered owners.

  50. Enclosed are copies of notices that appeared in PC WORLD and
  51. InfoWorld about a month ago. These generated substantial
  52. interest. I'm currently receiving $100-150 a day. However, this
  53. is almost certain to dry up unless I can get additional press
  54. coverage.

  56. There is no question in my mind that the Shareware needs
  57. to be able to get the needed recognition and press coverage that
  58. the programs deserve.

  67. I no longer offer the program for free or for $10. (See enclosed
  68. material that I send to potential buyers). I do offer that, if
  69. for any reason, they do not like or cannot use the program that
  70. they can keep the disk and I'll refund their $50, no questions
  71. asked. So far, I haven't received any requests for refunds.

  73. At this point in time, I have 50+ registered owners, a good
  74. portion of those in the last month. Only one person has actually
  75. become registered by sending in the $50 after getting the
  76. program from someone else.

  78. I have no idea how many copies of my program are in use, but
  79. suspect it is a significant multiple of those registered.

  81. I use the following method of attempting to get people to
  82. register the program. When the program is booted up, the
  83. following message is put on the screen:

  85.    PC - GENERAL LEDGER is being distributed under the
  86.    'Shareware' or 'Freeware' concept. If you like this program,
  87.    a contribution of $50 would be appreciated.
  88.  
  89.    As a registered owner, you will get telephone support, future
  90.    updates, and enhancements, and your name here instead of this
  91.    message.

  93.    Most importantly, you will get the latest version of the
  94.    program.

  96. When I register an owner, I actually hard code the following
  97. message in the program instead of the above:
  98.  
  99.    PC - GENERAL LEDGER (Vers 1.3) Serial No. 1234 registered
  100.    to Nelson Ford.

  102. I use Prokey to do the above and the re-compiling, so it isn't
  103. too much of an effort to register the program in that manner.

  105. One of the real advantages to the Shareware system is the feed
  106. back that is received. I got a lot of suggestions on how to make
  107. the program better with additional features. Most were
  108. incorporated into subsequent versions.

  110. I am currently working on version 1.4 and will incorporate a lot
  111. of your suggestions into it, particulary copyright notices,
  112. warranty and disclaimer notices, and better error handling
  113. messages.

  133. In an effort to keep people 'honest' and to encourage
  134. registration, I am seriously considering incorporating the
  135. following approach in the next version.
  136.  
  137. The programs are accounting programs and generate a lot of
  138. printed reports. Right now, the program provides for an easy
  139. method of changing the name that is printed on the top of the
  140. reports. I am considering deleting that feature and hard coding
  141. the registered owner's name in the program for report printing
  142. purposes. Of course, I would then have to provide the service to
  143. make any changes that the owner would require because of company
  144. name changes, etc.

  146. I would be interested in either of the the SIG's that you
  147. mentioned, particularly any method of co-operative marketing
  148. that makes sense. I would also be interested in trading mailing
  149. lists of registered owners with any other Shareware author.

  151. By the way, whatever happened to Andrew Fluegelmen's Freeware
  152. catalog that he was going to produce?
