- Dear Nelson,
-
- I am the author of the Shareware program, PC - GENERAL LEDGER, a
- simple but reasonably powerful accounting general ledger and
- check printing program.
-
- I found your Programmer's Guide disk to be very helpful and
- interesting.
-
- I thought I would pass along a couple of thoughts, ideas, and my
- experiences with the Shareware concept.
-
- I've been attempting to use that distribution method since last
- summer with very marginal results until recently.
-
- The program was initially written and developed about a year and
- half ago for a couple of custom installations in the local area.
- I then decided to try out the Shareware concept. I sent 'press
- releases' to several magazines as well as copies of the disk to
- about 15 of the larger User Groups.
-
- Only Dr. Dobbs printed anything (September issue) and I got a
- couple of orders ($50) from that. I eventually got about 150
- names and addresses from the bingo card. I sent an offer to
- those people for a free copy of the program if they sent a disk
- and prepaid mailer. For $10, I would provide the disk. I also
- suggested that they immediately send $50 to become a registered
- owner. I got about 25 disks and/or $10, but no $50 checks. At
- most, only one or two of the 25 ever became registered owners.
-
- Enclosed are copies of notices that appeared in PC WORLD and
- InfoWorld about a month ago. These generated substantial
- interest. I'm currently receiving $100-150 a day. However, this
- is almost certain to dry up unless I can get additional press
- coverage.
-
- There is no question in my mind that the Shareware needs
- to be able to get the needed recognition and press coverage that
- the programs deserve.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- I no longer offer the program for free or for $10. (See enclosed
- material that I send to potential buyers). I do offer that, if
- for any reason, they do not like or cannot use the program that
- they can keep the disk and I'll refund their $50, no questions
- asked. So far, I haven't received any requests for refunds.
-
- At this point in time, I have 50+ registered owners, a good
- portion of those in the last month. Only one person has actually
- become registered by sending in the $50 after getting the
- program from someone else.
-
- I have no idea how many copies of my program are in use, but
- suspect it is a significant multiple of those registered.
-
- I use the following method of attempting to get people to
- register the program. When the program is booted up, the
- following message is put on the screen:
-
- PC - GENERAL LEDGER is being distributed under the
- 'Shareware' or 'Freeware' concept. If you like this program,
- a contribution of $50 would be appreciated.
-
- As a registered owner, you will get telephone support, future
- updates, and enhancements, and your name here instead of this
- message.
-
- Most importantly, you will get the latest version of the
- program.
-
- When I register an owner, I actually hard code the following
- message in the program instead of the above:
-
- PC - GENERAL LEDGER (Vers 1.3) Serial No. 1234 registered
- to Nelson Ford.
-
- I use Prokey to do the above and the re-compiling, so it isn't
- too much of an effort to register the program in that manner.
-
- One of the real advantages to the Shareware system is the feed
- back that is received. I got a lot of suggestions on how to make
- the program better with additional features. Most were
- incorporated into subsequent versions.
-
- I am currently working on version 1.4 and will incorporate a lot
- of your suggestions into it, particulary copyright notices,
- warranty and disclaimer notices, and better error handling
- messages.

-
- In an effort to keep people 'honest' and to encourage
- registration, I am seriously considering incorporating the
- following approach in the next version.
-
- The programs are accounting programs and generate a lot of
- printed reports. Right now, the program provides for an easy
- method of changing the name that is printed on the top of the
- reports. I am considering deleting that feature and hard coding
- the registered owner's name in the program for report printing
- purposes. Of course, I would then have to provide the service to
- make any changes that the owner would require because of company
- name changes, etc.
-
- I would be interested in either of the the SIG's that you
- mentioned, particularly any method of co-operative marketing
- that makes sense. I would also be interested in trading mailing
- lists of registered owners with any other Shareware author.
-
- By the way, whatever happened to Andrew Fluegelmen's Freeware
- catalog that he was going to produce?
-
- Please feel free to distribute any of this document to your
- group.
-
- Enclosed is a check to help defray the expenses of your work for
- the group.
