- SETUP
-
- So you think that Reach Out America will save you money? AT&T says so but
- have you ever compared what your phone bill would be with and without it?
-
- Use this Quattro Pro 3.0 spreadsheet to find out whether you should buy
- the Reach Out America plan and whether you should buy (a) the night-time
- service discount only, (b) night-time service plus the discount for
- evening calls, or (c) the full plan of discounts for night, evening, and
- day service.
-
- The spreadsheet is self-explanatory. Enter the current percentage
- discount for evening and day-time calls in cells C4 and C5. Currently, the
- discounts for evening calls under Reachout America are 30 percent off
- for evening calls and 10 percent off for day-time calls. This percentage
- changes periodically.
-
- You will have to change the local tax rate in cell C10 for your community.
- In the District of Columbia, it is 9.7 percent.
-
-
- STARTUP
-
- AT&T.WQ1 and AT&T-TBL.WQ1 are linked spreadsheets. Both must be open in
- separate windows for proper calculation. Load AT&T.WQ1 first. Quattro Pro
- will ask you if you want to load "Supplementary Spreadsheets." Answer, "yes."
-
-
- USE
-
- Enter the cost data from your monthly telephone bill for all of the Reachout
- America calls that you made. The first call goes in row 14, as follows.
-
- A14 Amount
- B14 Place
- C14 Area Code
- D14 Month
- E14 Day
- F14 Hour of the day call was placed
- H14 Additional minutes when call was placed
- I14 Length of the call in minutes
-
- The hour of the day when the call was placed must be entered accorded to a
- 24-hour clock. For example, a call placed at 11:30pm would be entered as
- HOUR=23, MINUTES=30. A call placed at 12:01am would be entered as HOUR=0
- and MINUTES=1.
-
- Enter the data for the second call made in row 15 and so forth for all of
- the calls on one of your monthly bills.
-
- If you run out of lines to enter calls, the macro Alt-C will add a new line
- to the data table.
-
- Finish data entry for one month by entering long distance directory assistance
- charges in cell J7 and itemized calls in cell J8. Itemized calls are not
- covered by Reachout America. Generally, these are calls placed from another
- number and billed to your phone. Only direct dial calls are discounted under
- Reachout America.
-
- When you have entered all of the calls for one month, save the spreadsheet to
- disk. Remember to change the name of the file to AT&Tmmyy.WQ1 so that you
- do not destroy the empty copy of AT&T.WQ1.
-
- The only quirk I have found in AT&T's data is that two calls placed in
- succession to the same number are recorded as being placed at the
- same time when the length of the call spans one of the day-to-evening,
- evening-to-night, or night-to-day time boundaries. (These boundaries vary
- by day of the week as shown in AT&T-TBL.WQ1). Such calls are indicated by
- a "Mixed" rate. There will be two "mixed" calls--one for the portion before
- the time line and the other for the portion after. Enter such calls as
- ONE CALL, placed at the starting time listed and with length equal to the
- sum of the two calls. The spreadsheet splits the costs for you.
-
- The final total bill should be within a few cents of the total long distance
- cost of your bill.
-
- COST CALCULATION
-
- The method for determining what Reachout America plan is best for you is
- simple. Turn the switches D3, D4, and D5 ON and OFF to see what the effects
- are on total costs in cell J11. Record the numbers on a piece of paper.
-
- When you have accumulated spreadsheets for several months, you will be able
- to see whether you should subscribe for the "Night Only" plan, the "Night
- and Evening" plan, or the "Night, Evening, and Day" plan to minimize your long
- distance phone bill.
-
- Basically, you can see the cost rule in the spreadsheet. Take 10 percent
- (the discount rate) of the average monthly cost of phone calls placed during
- the day. If the amount is greater than $.90, buy the "Night, Evening, and
- Day" plan. Take 30 percent (the discount rate) of calls placed during the
- evening hours. If this amount is less than $.65, buy only the "Night" option
- of Reachout America.
-
- Finally, compute the average minutes of calls placed during the "Night" time
- hours. If the average is less than 60 minutes, cancel Reachout America.
