  1. Readme.1st             Welcome to Beta User 1.0
  2.                     The Beta Tester Database Program
  3.  
  4.   A few things to cover before you dive into the program.
  5.  
  6.   This should be a authenticated ZIP format. If not, then its possible
  7.   that you have not received the original archive released. Some BBS
  8.   SysOps do change the archive format when the file is placed on their
  9.   BBS. To confirm that you have received all the files originally
  10.   packaged, a file list is shown below, generated by
  11.   PKUNZIP -v buser10

  45.   System Requirements:
  46.  
  47.   1. Hard Disk:
  48.      To get started we reccomend 1 meg of hard drive space. The program
  49.      with all docs etc occupies about 233k of disk space. Another 300k
  50.      of space is required when the program swaps to disk for running DOS
  51.      commands from within the program. Some files may be deleted, see
  52.      below. Also, as your data files grow, they will require more room.
  53.  
  54.      The program can be run from a floppy, but is much more efficient
  55.      from a hard disk. This will be discussed further.

  63.   2. Memory:   Beta User 1.0 requires 400k of available memory to run
  64.      correctly. 500k or better is strongly advised, to get optimum use
  65.      from the program. So, a 640k memory system is the optimum.
  66.  
  67.   3. DOS Ver.  Beta User 1.0 was originally designed with Dos 3.3, but
  68.      should run well with any 3.x version. Runs under 4.0 and 5.0 also.
  69.      I have never tested with versions earlier than 3.3, if you do run
  70.      it under earlier versions, or if you have trouble with earlier
  71.      versions, I'd like to know about it.

  73.   4. Video: Will run under MONO, CGA, EGA, VGA. Beta User 1.0 will
  74.      automatically recognize the video. If you're running mono, you're
  75.      gonna miss some of the great color benifits.
  76.  
  77.   5. Printer: A printer is required for the Shareware version to obtain
  78.      printed reports. The registered version allows printing to a file,
  79.      for later printing.

  81.   To Install:
  82.  
  83.      Make a directory on your Hard drive ie: \BUSER then place the
  84.      BUSER10.ZIP in that directory and unpack it, PKUUZIP BUSER10
  85.      If you do not have a copy of PKUNZIP, you should be able to obtain
  86.      it from the BBS where you downloaded the file.

  88.      RRUN.EXE may be placed in another directory, that is in your
  89.      PATH statement. But BETA.COM needs to reside in the same
  90.      directory as the program files.
  91.  
  92.      Once the program has been unzipped, you can view or print the
  93.      documentation one of two ways.
  94.  
  95.      From the DOS prompt: type BUSER. to read the manual in a scrolling
  96.      window.  To print, enter either: copy BUSER10.doc prn - or -
  97.      type BUSER10.doc>prn
  98.  
  99.      OR type BETA to start Beta User 1.0, press F10 from the Main Menu
  100.      Then from The DOS window choose the command to View or Print
  101.      the Manual.

  104.      Files Required:

  106.      The following files ARE required to run Beta User 1.0.

  108.      *.DAT           The data files.
  109.      *.K##           #= a digit; the index files
  110.      *.MEM           The Memo files
  111.      RRUN.EXE        The Runtime Engine: May be in another directory
  112.                      thats listed in your PATH statement.
  113.      BUSER10.RUN     The Program Module
  114.         BETA.COM     Runs the Program. Must be in Program Directory

  120.      Files You've Received:

  122.          Buser.Com      Type this to view the Manual in a scrolling
  123.                         window, can be done from within Beta User.
  124.          Bmanual.Com    Will print the Manual, can be run from within
  125.                         Beta User.
  126.          Buser10.Doc    The Program Documentation
  127.          Beta.Com       Starts Beta User 1.0
  128.          Newstart.Com   After testing and trying Beta User, this will
  129.                         erase the supplied data,index,memo files, so you
  130.                         will have a clean slate. Beta User will build
  131.                         NEW and empty files next time you start.
  132.          Buser10.Run    The program Module.
  133.             RRUN.Exe    The Database Engine. Must be where Beta.Com can
  134.                         find it.
  135.              *.Dat      The Data files
  136.              *.K##      The Index files
  137.              *.Mem      The Memo files
  138.          Register.Frm   Use this to Register Beta User

  147.      Files For Deletion:
  148.  
  149.      The following files can be deleted, we reccomend that you do not do
  150.      so right away. Please read the manual before you do delete them.

  156.                         (After you have registered of course,<grin>)
  157.      Newstart.com       You should keep this one until you have read the
  158.                         manual, and played with the program, using the
  159.                         supplied data files. Once you are familar with
  160.                         the program, use this to erase the supplied
  161.                         data,index and memo files so you will have a
  162.                         clean slate for your information.

  166.      Running From Floppy:
  167.  
  168.      Beta User 1.0 can be run from a floppy, 360k will work. You will
  169.      need the files listed on the previous page under required files.
  170.      Two things to remember, the data files you create along with the
  171.      index files will reside on the same disk, in the same directory. As
  172.      the required program files use up almost 200k, this leaves little
  173.      room for data and index files. A 1.2 floppy would be best.
  174.  
  175.      Copy the files listed as REQUIRED to run Beta User to the floppy.
  176.  
  177.      While Beta User 1.0 is very easy to use, it is strongly
  178.      reccomended that you read the manual, its only about 10 pages long,
  179.      and it will make learning the program even easier.
