UNIVEL ANNOUNCES UNIXWARE EARLY ACCESS PROGRAM
More than 50 Key Software Developers and Hardware Vendors Support UnixWare
Solutions
SAN JOSE, California -- June 9, 1992 -- Univel, the joint partnership
between Novell, Inc. and UNIX System Laboratories, Inc., today announced
its Early Access Program, which allows software developers and hardware
vendors to support Univel's graphical, NetWare-ready UNIX operating
system, known as UnixWare. UnixWare for Intel-based PCs is based on UNIX
SVR4.2 and will ship in volume later in 1992.
More than 50 key developers are participating in the Early-Access Program
and are committed to supporting Univel's UnixWare when it ships. The
result of this program will be to provide end-users with the UNIX
applications and hardware support they require in today's enterprise-wide
network computing environment. Participants of the Early Access Program
include 3COM, Adaptec, Applix, Borland, Frame Technology, Great Plains
Software, HyperDesk, Informix, Ingres, Island Graphics, Interleaf,
Lotus, Oracle, Progress, and WordPerfect. Furthermore, Intel, UNIX
International and USL are supporting the program.
"Customers have been asking for a solution that delivers all the strengths
of UNIX in an easy-to-use, graphical environment with seamless integration
to NetWare networks," said Joel A. Appelbaum, Univel president and CEO.
"With our Early Access Program, software developers and hardware
manufacturers can begin exploiting the power of UnixWare today, to deliver
the next-generation of distributed computing."
In addition to the key applications which have been targeted by Univel's
Early Access Program, UnixWare is compatible with over 3000 existing
UNIX-based applications available for the Intel X86 platform. Furthermore,
access to thousands of DOS- and Windows-based applications, and to NetWare
networked computing resources are also provided, giving customers a broad
range of solutions for their distributed computing environment.
"Novell's objective with Univel is to ensure customers can better
integrate their valued applications with computer networks through an
easy-to-use, 32-bit, scalable application platform that becomes an
integral part of the NetWare solution," Kanwal S. Rekhi, Novell executive
vice president and general manager Interoperability Systems Group.
"Univel provides a volume distribution channel that puts SVR4.2 in the
mainstream of corporate client/server computing," said Roel Pieper,
president and CEO of USL. "Univel's developer program will fuel the
proliferation of applications that take advantage of the new levels of
power and networking provided through UnixWare."
Developer Support
"We are excited about the strides that Univel is making in furthering the
desktop UNIX market. UnixWare will be a great addition to current UNIX
offerings in the market," said Brent McKinley, director of UNIX marketing
at WordPerfect Corporation.
"Both Novell and UNIX System Laboratories should be congratulated for
founding Univel and for bringing UnixWare to market P a product that will
greatly assist thousands of NetWare customers to seamlessly integrate
their PC and UNIX networks," said D.J. Long, vice president of marketing
for Applix.
"By supporting UnixWare, HyperDesk is continuing its mission and
commitment to offer an industry-standard, open, distributed computing
solution which supports as many hardware and software platforms as
possible," said Jerry Levin, vice chairman of HyperDesk.
"UnixWare substantially strengthens the link between UNIX and NetWare,"
said Jim Sha, vice president of Oracle's UNIX products division. "The
UnixWare operating environment enhances Oracle's long-standing
environment via SPX/IPX protocol support. The result will be a more
integrated combination of Novell file servers and Oracle's UNIX database
servers on PC LANs."
