  5.                        BINDFIX Aberration
  6.  
  7.      When BINDFIX.EXE is executed under the following conditions, data loss 
  8.      will occur:
  9.  
  10.            o  The NetWare operating system is version 2.15 or below.
  11.  
  12.            o  The NetWare shell being used on the workstation where 
  13.               BINDFIX.EXE is being executed is a NetWare 386 shell, 
  14.               version 3.0.
  15.  
  16.            o  The NetWare 386 v3.0 shell is using the "SHOW DOTS ON" 
  17.               parameter.  The default for this parameter is ON.
  18.  
  19.            o  A user has been deleted from the bindery without the 
  20.               corresponding mail directory being deleted.  This occurs when 
  21.               the SYSCON utility being used was an earlier version shipped 
  22.               with NetWare v2.11 or below and the shell being used is a 
  23.               NetWare 386 version 3.0 shell.

  25.            o  The BINDFIX user answers "Yes" to the question, "Delete mail 
  26.               directories of users that no longer exist?"
  27.  
  28.      NOTE: Data loss will occur only when all the above conditions are met.

  30.      The Cause
  31.  
  32.            The early versions of SYSCON.EXE were not prepared to deal with 
  33.            the directory entry '.' (from the SHELL.CFG parameter "SHOW 
  34.            DOTS = ON").  This resulted in the user mail directory not being 
  35.            properly deleted.
  36.  
  37.            BINDFIX.EXE, similarly, is unable to deal with the '.' directory 
  38.            entry.  When it attempts to delete mail directories of nonexistent 
  39.            users, it will get caught in a loop of deleting files and 
  40.            directories.

  42.      Preventive Measures
  43.  
  44.            o  We recommend that NetWare users use the 3.0 shell only with 
  45.               NetWare 386 file servers and with NetWare 386 utilities.
  46.  
  47.            o  In an internetwork environment where it may be necessary to 
  48.               use the 3.0 shell with 2.1x file servers, place the command 
  49.               "SHOW DOTS = OFF" in the SHELL.CFG file.
  50.  
  51.            o  Users of some applications need the "SHOW DOTS = ON" parameter 
  52.               set.  Make sure that they have insufficient rights to run 
  53.               BINDFIX.EXE.
  54.  
  55.            o  Make sure that there are no versions of SYSCON.EXE on your 
  56.               internetwork that are earlier than NetWare version 2.12.
  57.  
  58.            o  Maintain current backups.
