rMail 1.00 - 17 December 1991
1. What is rMail?
rMail is a stand alone mail package for the LANtastic Network Operating
System. It consists of two programs mail.exe a command line version and
tmail.exe a tsr. The command line version contains a complete context
sensitive help facility, a 80 column by 20 row full screen text editor,
and many features requested by LANtastic owners. Some of these features
are:
Auto search for mail, rMail searches every server your computer is logged
into for mail addressed to you.
Extended security - rMail offers you the ability to mark mail so that only
the sender can delete it. This allows you to use the full group mail cap-
ibility of the LANtastic mail system.
Stand alone program, can be run from your autoexec.bat or startnet.bat
file, without letting your users enter the sometimes dangerous net menu
system.
Full screen editor makes composing and sending a message very easy, the
screen can be blanked so you can look at display under it, this is useful
when copying from a program to the mail system.
It is now possible to send programs and data files via mail and preserve
the program name.
Larger message buffer it now holds 400 80 column lines of text in the
editor.
rMail is 100% compatible with the LANtastic mail system. You can still
send and receive messages with the LANtastic net mail system.(rMail does
not currently support voice so if you want to send voice mail you will
still need to use the LANtastic net mail system.)
Templates, rMail allows you to design simple mail templates for commonly
sent messages, ie phone message etc.(You must have the m mail queue
priviledge.)
Since all the code was already there rMail also has a built in notefile
that will allow you to keep and pop up private notes.
2. How do I install rMail?
Installation of rMail could not be easier, copy Mail.exe, Mail.hlp,
and if you wish tMail.exe to a directory on your path. Your notefiles
will be stored in this directory. The name of the default notefile's
name will be the first 8 characters of your username with the extension
.nte. You can choose a different name (the extension must remain .nte).
3. How do I use rMail?
rMail can be used on any computer running MSDOS or PCDOS 3.1 or greater
running LANtastic version 3.xx or up. There must be at least one server
on the network with a LANtastic mail resource @mail.
rMail is started with the command MAIL. At this time rMail searches your
servers for mail addressed to you and displays a small window at the top
of the screen. In this window it lists the number of messages waiting for
you, below this is the main menu <R>ead <S>end <N>otefile e<X>it. Hitting
escape or x will exit the current menu. No matter where you are in the
program pressing <ESC> repeatedly will eventually exit the program and
restore the screen.
The main display appears below.

All menus respond the same, you select an entry by either using the
arrow keys to highlight the selection and pressing enter or by pressing
the capital letter beginning the menu item. At any time in the program
you can press F1 for context sensitive help. You must press F1 to exit
help as well.
READING MESSAGES
Selecting R will display the messages waiting for you. The first screen
displays the Sender of the message and the comment describing the message.

Highlighting a message and pressing enter will bring up an info screen
displaying the Sender of the message, the server the message is stored on,
the size of the message, the date and time the message was sent, the
comment attached to the message, and the security of the message. The
security is either "Receiver can delete" or "Sender only can delete".

It also displays the read menu. This menu gives you the option of:
READing the message If the message is a text file or a message composed
in the mail editor, the message is displayed in the mail editor.
You can use the cursor and page keys to move through the file while
reading it. The mail editor will display up to 200 78 character
lines. Larger messages must be composed and read using an external
text editor and send as a text file.
If you want you can edit and resend the message, the editor is fully
active and if you edit the file and change it's size the program will
exit to the address screen to allow you to reply to the sender or
forward the message to another user.

This screen automatically defaults to replying to the originator of
the message on the same server as the message was sent. If the
address information is correct hit <ESC> and respond Y to the send
message question. If it is not correct use the up and down arrows
to move to the incorrect information and change it. The security
can be toggled by hitting <R> for receiver delete and <S> for Sender
delete only. If you do not want the message to be saved on the
server you can move down to the server address line and cycle through
the available servers with a mail resource with the F10 key.
Whether you choose to edit and reply to the message or not you will
returned to the message information screen and allowed to choose again
from the Read Message Menu.
ANSWERING a message. This selection will enter the mail editor and allow
you to compose an answer to the message. This option clears the
editor before you begin to enter your message so you cannot quote
the original message in your reply. The editor responds to the
following commands:

Again pressing escape or F2 when the message is ready to sent will
return you to the address screen to send the message and then to
the message information screen for further action.

allow you to forward the message to another user. The comment is
changed to Mail From: (user name) FORWARDed by: (your name). After
the message is sent, you are returned to the message information
screen.
COPYING the message to a file. This will allow you to copy the message
from the mail queue to a file on your disk drive. The default name
if the first word of the comment. Since the comment field of a TEXT,
VOICE, or DOS file always consists of the filename of the file sent
followed by either DOS FILE, TEXT FILE, or VOICE FILE. Filenames of
mailed files can be preserved across the network. Again after copying
the file you are returned to the message information screen.
PRINTING the message. This selection will allow you to print the message
the printout contains a one line header consisting of the sender of
the message the server is was saved on and the comment(if any). You
will be returned to the message information screen for further action.
DELETING a message. If the message is not Sender Delete only you can
the message by selecting this command. This command does not return
you to the message info screen but rather returns you to the first
message display.
EXIT - pressing either X or <ESC> will move you back to the message display
screen and allow you to select another message.
SENDING A MESSAGE
Selecting S will display the Send Mail menu. You have 4 choices you can
compose the message using the mail editor described above, you can send
an text file created by an external editor. (If you want the FORWARDing to
be able to read the message with the built in editor this should be a true
ASCII file, word processor files should be sent as DOS files.) You can send
a Voice file (created outside the program) and you can send a DOS program or
data file.

notes. After making this selection you are prompted for the file

be accepted by pressing enter. Pressing F10 will cycle through all
the available notefiles on the disk. The editor is same as the
editor you use to read and reply to messages. The file is saved
in the same directory as the mail program is loaded from. These
files are also limited to 200 lines of 78 characters.
tMAIL THE TSR VERSION OF rMAIL IS INCLUDED IN THIS PACKAGE. BECAUSE OF
SIZE RESTRAINTS tMAIL DOES NOT CONTAIN THE HELP SYSTEM, AND THE MAXIMUM
