  2.                            NetWare v2.2
  3.  
  4. NetWare v2.2 is the next generation in the evolution of the 286-based
  5. product line.  This product replaces all previous NetWare v2.1x products,
  6. including ELS.  The stratification of NetWare v2.2 has helped to focus the
  7. product to meet the demands of the workgroup market.  The following are
  8. the stratification levels and part numbers for NetWare v2.2:
  9.

  24. Each stratification comes with two separate Operating System options. The
  25. user can choose to run SFT NetWare Level II w/TTS (called Dedicated
  26. NetWare v2.2) or Non-dedicated SFT NetWare Level I (aka Advanced)
  27. (called Non-dedicated NetWare v2.2).  A user can also order the above
  28. products on either 5 1/4" high density diskettes or 3 1/2" high density
  29. diskettes.

  35. There are many differences and new features supported with NetWare v2.2. 
  36. They are listed below:
  37.  
  38. 1.    New INSTALLation utilities.  NETGEN, BRGEN, and SHGEN are no
  39.       longer used with NetWare v2.2.  These v2.1x programs have been
  40.       replaced with INSTALL, ROUTEGEN, and WSGEN respectively.  The
  41.       advantages of the new utilities are:
  42.  
  43.       a) consistency of keystrokes, so that <Enter> and <Esc> mean the
  44.       exact same thing no matter where used.
  45.  
  46.       b) programs now utilize "forms" rather than the Menu/Sub-Menu
  47.       system utilized in previous utilities.
  48.  
  49.       c) an "Easy" installation for first time users, that make generating a
  50.       basic NetWare v2.2 server extremely easy.
  51.  
  52.       d) a redesign that allows for installation without the large quantity of
  53.       "floppy swaps" that was required with NETGEN.
  54.  
  55.       e) consistency of utilities, so that whether you are running INSTALL,
  56.       ROUTEGEN or WSGEN, the look and feel of each utility is the same.
  57.  
  58. 2.    Current v2.1x users have had problems with a lack of File Service
  59.       Processes (FSP), especially those using VAP's and/or large drives. 
  60.       The reorganization of the file server memory in NetWare v2.2 has
  61.       resolved this problem.  Some of the changes are as follows:
  62.  
  63.   a)  The core print services have been removed from the OS (the parts that
  64.       are replaced by the PrintServer). In conjunction with this change,
  65.       many obsolete console commands have been removed.
  66.  
  67.   b)  The directory handle table (PathTable) and all dynamically
  68.       allocated directory handles have been moved to be in a new segment,
  69.       called Dynamic Memory Pool 4.
  70.  
  71. 3.    Other OS changes have been made to enhance the NetWare v2.2 product. 
  72.       These enhancements are as follows:
  73.  
  74.   a)  Entries into the routing tables are now dynamically allocated
  75.       space, so that a NetWare v2.2 server can co-exist on a much larger
  76.       network than ever before.  The new routing table can hold more
  77.       entries, depending on the size of the entries.  No exact number can
  78.       be set to this, due to the dynamic nature of the table, but it is
  79.       possible to have from 4 to 5 times more entries in the router tables
  80.       than was available in NetWare v2.1x.
  81.  
  82.   b)  Enhanced security, including the addition of Workgroup
  83.       Managers, as has been provided in NetWare v3.x.
  84.  
  85.   c)  Change in trustee rights, so that they match v3.x.  They are:
  86.  
  87.             R     Read
  88.             W     Write
  89.             C     Create
  90.             E     Erase (formerly Delete)
  91.             M     Modify
  92.             F     File Scan (formerly Search)
  93.             A     Access Control (formerly Parental)
  94.  
  95.       This provides consistency between v2.2 and v3.x.  The NetWare
  96.       utilities will still understand the old rights, but will show only 
  97.       the new rights. For example, a user can still GRANT a user ROS rights, 
  98.       but they will appear as RF rights.
  99.  
  100.   d)  Many conditional variables have been removed or consolidated.
  101.  
  102.  
  103. 4.    The addition of a third external router has been provided to assist
  104.       many users who run VAPs on their external routers.  The two
  105.       existing routers, the dedicated real mode and the non-dedicated
  106.       protected mode, still are available, with the addition of the new
  107.       dedicated protected mode router.  This router allows for much
  108.       greater performance of VAPs on the router, especially the NetWare
  109.       for Macintosh VAP.
  110.  
  111. 5.    Enhanced DOS Workstation support, as the v3.02 shells are
  112.       provided with NetWare v2.2.  Users can now take advantage of
  113.       extended and expanded memory in the workstation.  Also, Windows
  114.       support, which previously required the purchase of a separate shell,
  115.       is now standard.
  116.  
  117. 6.    WSUPDATE.  A new program has been provided for use by network
  118.       supervisors.  This program, called WSUPDATE, will allow a System
  119.       Administrator/Supervisor to quickly and efficiently update user DOS
  120.       workstations from one location.
  121.  
  122. 7.    NWSETUP.  A new, automated initial user setup for a basic network,
  123.       including creating users, rights, home directories, etc.  Very helpful
  124.       to the first-time network supervisor.
  125.  
  126. 8.    Enhanced Printing Services, including:
  127.  
  128.   a)  Print Server v1.21.  This new release contains a smaller,
  129.       configurable RPRINTER and offers much faster throughput when
  130.       running as a VAP.  This new release also supports NetWare Name
  131.       Service utilities and services existing print queues and network nodes
  132.       on up to 8 internetworked v2.1x, v2.2 and v3.x servers.
  133.  
  134.   b)  Enhanced, linkable core printing services are provided for those
  135.       who do not wish to run the Print Server VAP.  The advantages of this
  136.       new linkable core printing is the ability to maintain a server's printers
  137.       and queues without having to down the server.  Now printers and
  138.       queues can be defined or removed via the console, without having
  139.       to down the server and run NETGEN.  This provides greater flexibility
  140.       for the user, since all printing setup can be loaded into the server's
  141.       AUTOEXEC.SYS file for immediate setup, each time the server boots. 
  142.       All maintenance can be done on the fly, via new console commands.
  143.  
  144.   c)  A new server command allows the system supervisor to specify
  145.       how often the server polls the print queues for print jobs when using
  146.       the core printing option.  NetWare v2.1x products polled every 15
  147.       seconds.  With NetWare v2.2, the user has the flexibility to set this to
  148.       a desired interval.  Very useful for users who require immediate
  149.       printing, such as for Point-of-Sale situations requiring the immediate
  150.       printing of receipts.
  151.  
  152. 9.    Enhanced NetWare for Macintosh support, with the release of the
  153.       NetWare for Macintosh v2.2 VAP, which provides support for Apple
  154.       Computer's AppleTalk Phase 2, AppleTalk Filing Protocol v2.2, and
  155.       TokenTalk.  In addition, the NetWare for MAC utilities have been
  156.       enhanced to allow added network administration capabilities from a
  157.       MAC workstation.  Also, the new NetWare v2.2 INSTALL program
  158.       has the ability to load the NetWare for Macintosh VAPs automatically
  159.       during initial server installation.  This is done via a seed VAP.
  160.  
  161. 10.   New serialization scheme, as the serial number is no longer linked
  162.       into the operating system via the CACHE.OBJ file.  Each OS object
  163.       file contains the serial number, so that the GENDATA diskette is no
  164.       longer needed.
  165.  
  166. 11.   NetWare v2.2 includes the NetWare DOS Open Data-Link (ODI)
  167.       Client drivers.  There drivers support multiple protocols (ie. IPX/SPX
  168.       and TCP/IP) through a single workstation network adapter.
  169.  
  170. 12.   Enhanced NetWare HELP, called NetWare Help II, which is an
  171.       enhanced version of the retrieval system the is used.  Contains
  172.       support for non-Novell create help files (created with Folio's Views
  173.       product), pull down menus, TSR-like access, mouse support,
  174.       graphics support, and foreign character support.  NetWare Help II
  175.       has been optimized for the NetWare environment.
  176.  
  177. 13.   Enhanced utilities that are now common between NetWare v2.2 and
  178.       v3.x.  Though the utilities may not contain the same functionality
  179.       when run with different OS's, the files are the same.  The utilities
  180.       have been created so that they are aware of whether they are on a
  181.       NetWare v2.1x, v2.2 or v3.x server.  Some of the most notable
  182.       changes are to FCONSOLE (because of changes in server memory pools),
  183.       FILER (which now has ability to copy a specified group of files or
  184.       subdirectories, like XCOPY), LOGIN (with two new parameters,
  185.       ACCESS_SERVER and PASSWORD_EXPIRES), and MAP (which has
  186.       MAP ROOT and MAP NEXT support).
  187.  
  188. 14.   NetWare v2.2 has a new disk analysis procedure in a file called
  189.       ZTEST.  ZTEST, which can be run command line, is accessed by the
  190.       new INSTALL program.  COMPSURF was used in the past to test the
  191.       integrity of the drives in the server.  Since hard disk technology, as
  192.       well as NetWare's SFT features, have advanced to the point that a
  193.       full COMPSURF is no longer necessary.  ZTEST now provides the
  194.       analysis support necessary.  This will reduce the time necessary to
  195.       install NetWare.  COMPSURF will still be provided with NetWare v2.2,
  196.       but will not be accessible from the INSTALL program.
  197.  
  198. 15.   NetWare v2.2 will ship on High Density media only, significantly
  199.       reducing the number of floppies.  Due to the new INSTALL and the
  200.       reduction of floppies, the number of "floppy swaps" during installation
  201.       has been reduced over 70%.
  202.  
  203. 16.   Consolidated and simplified documentation set is included with
  204.       NetWare v2.2.  The new manual set is designed to more closely
  205.       match the user's level of experience and information needs.
  206.  
  207. 17.   NetWare v2.2 supports the NetWare Requester for OS/2 v1.3.  This
  208.       release offers Named Pipes support for OS/2, DOS and Windows,
  209.       contains a preferred server option, and provides the ability to support
  210.       diskless workstations by doing remote program loads from the
  211.       server to the OS/2 client.  The Requester is not supplied with
  212.       NetWare v2.2 in its initial release, but there is a coupon inside the
  213.       NetWare v2.2 kit that a user can send in to obtain the Requester.
  214.  
  215. 18.   Other items of interest:
  216.  
  217.   a)  Accounting has been fixed in v2.2.  Prior to this release, there
  218.       were problems in how account balances were updated.  
  219.  
  220.   b)  UPS problems associated with specific machines, such as some
  221.       of the IBM PS/2 range, have been resolved.
  222.  
  223.   c)  VREPAIR functions on systems with multiple printers, large drives
  224.       with multiple volumes, and outputs correct printout.
  225.  
  226.   d)  A common BINDFIX between NetWare v2.2 and NetWare v3.x is
  227.       supplied with this release.
  228.  
  229.   e)  DISKED is no longer shipped with NetWare v2.2.
  230.  
  231.   f)  NET2 is no longer shipped with NetWare v2.2, but is supported if
  232.       a user upgrades to NetWare v2.2 from an older system.
  233.  
  234.   g)  NBACKUP is included with NetWare v2.2, providing an additional
  235.       backup option to the Backup VAP, which is still supplied in this
  236.       release.
  237.  
  238.   h)  The IBM PS/2 SCSI driver (PS2SCSI.OBJ) is provided with the
  239.       NetWare v2.2 kit.
  240.  
  241.   i)  The high (over 100%) utilization problem with fast servers (25MHz
  242.       or higher) that existed in NetWare v2.15 is fixed in NetWare v2.2.
  243.  
  244.   j)  Corrections to the timing and order of messages that were in error,
  245.       such as while booting and when remirroring.
  246.   
  247.   k)  Solves some problems found when mirroring NetWare Ready drives.
  248.  
  249.   l)  Loader will now boot an OS if the drive has greater than 1024 cyl.
  250.  
  251.   m)  Some fixes for the support of removable drives. Support has not been
  252.       greatly enhanced, but errors have been fixed, such as the ability to 
  253.       have a removable drive on a system that has mirrored disks. Also, larger 
  254.       removable drives that had trouble mounting are now able to mount.
  255.  
  256.   n)  A problem concerning a conflict between TTS and Logical Record locking
  257.       has been solved.
  258.  
  259.   o)  Although the non-dedicated option can only access 8MB of RAM, it no 
  260.       longer fails if the system has more than that. Anything above 8MB will
  261.       not be accessed.
  262.  
  263.   p)  The global descriptor table overflow in the non-dedicated mode has
  264.       been fixed.
  265.  
  266.   r)  The console command CONFIG has been enhanced to include disk
  267.       driver information as well.  Also, a pause has been added to all
  268.       console commands that might scroll needed information off the screen.
  269.  
  270.   s)  Many other bug fixes and enhancements to the entire product, that
  271.       are too lengthy for this document.  Most utilities and all drivers
  272.       are new to this release, and solve problems found in the past, as
  273.       well as providing the user with new functionality.
  274.  
  275. All other features that were supported in NetWare v2.15 are supported in 
  276. NetWare v2.2, such as all of the fault tolerance features, communication 
  277. features, administration features, and extended services (such as MHS, 
  278. Btrieve, Async Link, etc.).
