  16.     Although this version has come out within a month of the last one, as
  17.     of now I .envision a .while for .the next one.  .I will .continue .to
  18.     compile .data .and ask for your .help in .providing it, at the .above

  21.     CAUTION:  If .using TODAY.EXE .the files will .need to be edited, .as
  22.     certain sequences are only available in NEWDAYPC.EXE.  I have bundled
  23.     this with both TODAY34Z.ZIP and NEWDAY45.ZIP, the last known programs
  24.     made available.

  26.     The  data contained here is in straight ascii.   It is historical  and 
  27.     educational  and  although  the  amount  of hours  I  have  worked  at 
  28.     compiling this is uncountable, I  do NOT ask/beg for any renumeration.  
  29.     Use and enjoy it!

  31.     The data now takes over 3.35 meg!

  33.     To display the data, you will either need "TODAY" a program by Patrick 
  34.     Kincaid,  or my preference "NEWDAYPC" by Mike Ratledge.  They are both 
  35.     available  via  shareware.   I  have even seen  some  lesser  products 
  36.     available.   If you don't have these programs, you can still enjoy it, 
  37.     through a word processor. 
  38.  
  39.     Version 9.06 is released on  April 17, 1992, it adds or  corrects over
  40.     2,500 items.  Major  import  came from Mike  Ratledge's disaster  data
  41.     and  Jerry  Lee's  black  history data.   The space  program has  been 
  42.     update  to reflect  all US manned  missions including  birth dates  of
  43.     the new  1992 crop of  astronauts.   The data has  gone beyond 50,000.
  44.     There  is  DAY906-U.ZIP,   which  contains  everything  (except   word
  45.     processor) to up date, from 9.05 with just some editing from yourself.

  47.     Version 9.05  released  March  20, 1992  adds or corrects  over 11,000
  48.     items. I still have  Braunwart's data to go  through.  Major additions
  49.     came from  "Complete  Directory  to Prime Time  TV Stars."  There  are
  50.     nearly 50,000 items in the database.

  52.     Version 9.04 released March 30, 1991 -  A  tragic thing happened on my 
  53.     way to version 9.04.   In December of 1989,  I  started adding several 
  54.     thousands (tens of thousands)  of changes and additions Many thanks to 
  55.     my collabarator Robert Braunwart.   I  then purchased a spiffy new 386 
  56.     machine with a spacious 85  meg hard SCSI Segate drive.   Around April 
  57.     or so, I had completed editing and compiling all of version 9.04, save 
  58.     December.   I   was  more than 3/4  done with December,  and  then  it 
  59.     happened.  DOS said "NO SCSI DRIVE FOUND."  After making attempt after 
  60.     attempt to revive the (of course not backed up data)  drive,  all hope 
  61.     was lose.  I did get a replacement drive, but it took the heart out of 
  62.     doing the compilation.  Any way I got my dander back and viola,  added 
  63.     some 9,000 new entries (or corrections) and version 9.04 is ready.  In 
  64.     an effort to get this out sometime,  I  have not gone through much  of 
  65.     Robert Braunwarts additional data.  (Just Jan & Feb).  I am sure since 
  66.     then he has added even more data.  I will get to it, I promise! 
  67.  
  68.     Version 9.03 released Nov 6,  1989  adds or corrects over 7,500 items.  
  69.     Including almost every Pro Hockey Stanley Cup final game, Pro Football 
  70.     and  NBA  championship contests.   Many astronaut birthdays have  been 
  71.     added  too.  Most of the  7,500   items are additional information  to 
  72.     previously existing items.

  74.     Version  9.02   became  available on May 25th it  contained over  1,100 
  75.     changes.   The data set now includes almost all  major league  baseball 
  76.     no-hitters  since  1900  and the final games of  every  baseball  World 
  77.     Series.

  79.     DAY  9.00  was released on Feb.  19,  1989,  and in less than 45  days, 
  80.     version  9.01  &  9.01a were released.  With almost 2500  changes (1900 
  81.     additions, 200 deletions and 400 changes).

  85.          A BIT OF HISTORY
  86.     In  July,  1986,  Patrick Kincaid released for public usage  a  program 
  87.     called  Today.    It's  based on a mainframe program designed  by  Mike 
  88.     Butler. Along with the master program he had data files for each month.  
  89.     Each monthly data file was approximately 15K in length.   After  a  few 
  90.     months  I  had added a lot of new data and released my  update  of  the 
  91.     Today monthly files.  Eventually, Robert Braunwart, put out his updates 
  92.     and   approached  me  on  a  calibration  of  our   work.     Despite, 
  93.     abbreviations and other attempts at shortening the data, the 12 monthly 
  94.     files of over 30,000 items has swelled to almost 2 megs. 
  95.     
  96.     Mike Ratledge,  like myself  and many others have gotten much enjoyment 
  97.     out of this program,  but found some short comings.   TODAY  would  not 
  98.     read a file over 50K and would only display  about  the first 50  finds 
  99.     for a date.  He also wanted it to run on a BBS (T-Comm).  So he rewrote 
  100.     the program in turbo-pascal (TODAY.EXE was written in C). 
  101.     
  102.     As  of this writing,  Ratledge's latest version 4.5   decidedly  beats 
  103.     Kincaid's latest version 2.3 for features. 
  104.     
  105.     I believe NEWDAY duplicates every feature of TODAY, but also allows for 
  106.     randomness,   more categories,  more color,  remark  statements,   date 
  107.     scanning and date aging. 
  108.     
  109.     In  the data files you will find "(BG),"  on some occasions.   Although 
  110.     coincidentally those are my initials,  they are actual those of William 
  111.     Baring-Gould.   Les Moskowitz who compiled Sherlock Holmes' dates  used 
  112.     (BG)   to  indicate that those dates  were  proposed  by  Baring-Gould.  
  113.     Baring-Gould is a Sherlock Holmes' authority and his dates are reckoned 
  114.     as opposed to being in the actual text.

  124.          HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE RIGHT?
  125.     As to data correction,  it is sometimes  difficult to verify a specific 
  126.     date when two equally  good  sources  have different information.   One 
  127.     problem arises in the change of calendars  from Julian to Gregorian and 
  128.     the  International  dateline does present  a problem.    It  may  be  a 
  129.     different day in California than  France. (Fortunately in the future we 
  130.     should have no problem -  Star  date 8801,  captain).   I  read in  one 
  131.     particularly enjoyable source (don't recall the title)  that  contained 
  132.     celebrities  birthdays,   that  whenever a doubt arose  they  took  the 
  133.     earliest date.    It is rare that a person would make themselves older. 
  134.     ...and when in doubt blame it on typos.
