  20.           ***  WHAT IS MEAL-MASTER?  ***
  21.  
  22.                Meal-Master is a menu-driven database system especially
  23.                created and tailored to manage recipes.  With Meal-Master,
  24.                you can store, update, and print your recipes in a variety
  25.                of formats.  But the real power of Meal-Master lies in its
  26.                search and utility functions!
  27.  
  28.                You can search for recipes using any combination of Title,
  29.                Category, or Ingredient criteria.  Imagine being able to
  30.                find all the recipes that can be made with a certain
  31.                ingredient!  Plus, just change the number of servings a
  32.                recipe makes, and all the individual ingredient amounts will
  33.                be adjusted automatically!

  35.                To help in entire menu preparation, you can "mark" recipes
  36.                as you select them.  Then activate the Shopping List
  37.                function:  Meal-Master will find the ingredients for all the
  38.                marked recipes, total the quantities of like items, and
  39.                print a shopping list!

  41.                Other features allow you to print a recipe index by title or
  42.                category, "batch" print a set of recipes, or "extract"
  43.                recipes to a standard DOS file, so you can use it in a word
  44.                processor or upload it to a bulletin board system.
  45.                Extracted recipes can also be "imported" back into
  46.                Meal-Master without retyping - making recipe exchange with
  47.                friends that use Meal-Master a real snap!

  49.                Meal-Master not only replaces the dog-eared, disorganized
  50.                collection of index cards found in most kitchens, it
  51.                provides a valuable tool for meal selection and preparation!

  54.           ***  WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED?  ***
  55.  
  56.                Meal-Master should run on any IBM-PC, PC-XT, or close
  57.                compatible with at least 384k of memory.  It will run on
  58.                floppy or hard disk systems, with either a color or
  59.                monochrome monitor.

  74.           ***  HOW DO I GET STARTED?  ***
  75.  
  76.                To start using Meal-Master, you need only the program file,
  77.                named MM.EXE.  When you type "MM" and press return,
  78.                Meal-Master should begin running.
  79.  
  80.                Meal-Master stores your recipes in three files:  INDEX.MMF,
  81.                INGRED.MMF, and DIRECT.MMF.  It uses a fourth file,
  82.                PARM.MMF, to store information such as what kind of forms
  83.                you are using on your printer.  Starting with version 5.00,
  84.                there is also a fifth file, CATFILE.MMF, which is used to
  85.                store a list of valid recipe categories.  If any of these
  86.                files are not found when Meal-Master starts, they are
  87.                created automatically.  This makes Meal-Master very easy to
  88.                install:  just copy the MM.EXE file to the diskette or hard
  89.                disk directory of your choice, type MM, and press return.
  90.                Meal-Master will ask you for the operating parameters it
  91.                needs to build the PARM.MMF file, then create a new recipe
  92.                database.

  96.                   If you have been using a previous version of
  97.                   Meal-Master (or Meal-Meister), with a version number
  98.                   less than 5.01, then your current working disk or
  99.                   hard disk directory will contain two program files,
  100.                   MM.COM and MM.000.  YOU SHOULD DELETE THESE TWO FILES
  101.                   before attempting to use version 5.01 or higher of
  102.                   Meal-Master.  Alternately, create a new working disk
  103.                   (or directory) and copy your database files (*.MMF)
  104.                   to the new disk or directory, along with the new
  105.                   program file.
  106.  
  107.                   Version 5.01 and higher of Meal-Master consists of
  108.                   one program file, MM.EXE.  If both the new (MM.EXE)
  109.                   and old (MM.COM) files are present on the disk and
  110.                   directory when you type "MM" and press return, the
  111.                   new program will be ignored and the old program will
  112.                   be run.

  114.                   Also, for Meal-Master to run properly you must have
  115.                   the file CONFIG.SYS in the root directory of the disk
  116.                   you boot from, and it must contain a "FILES=xx"
  117.                   statement, where "xx" is at least (11).  If not, some
  118.                   Meal-Master functions will not operate.
  119.  
  120.                If you're in a hurry to see how some of Meal-Master's
  121.                advanced features work, you can try it out with the sample
  122.                recipe database provided.  Make sure that the provided
  123.                INDEX.MMF, INGRED.MMF, DIRECT.MMF, PARM.MMF, and CATFILE.MMF
  124.                are on the same disk and directory as the program files, and
  125.                start Meal-Master.  Then try out the search, shopping list
  126.                and batch print options.  You can keep these recipes and add
  127.                to them, or delete the files and start your own database.

  140.           ***  OK, IT'S RUNNING - NOW WHAT?  ***

  142.                Meal-Master is completely menu driven and very easy to use.
  143.  
  144.                ADDING RECIPES
  145.                     Selecting 'A' from the main menu allows you to add new
  146.                     recipes to the file.  You will be prompted for the
  147.                     title, categories (each recipe can reference up to five
  148.                     categories), and number of servings.  When asked for
  149.                     categories, a window will be displayed containing all
  150.                     the valid category names (If more than one page of
  151.                     names exist, the PGUP and PGDN keys will move through
  152.                     the categories; and category names can be changed,
  153.                     added, or deleted from the Maintenance/Setup menu).

  155.                     Next, Meal-Master will display the ingredient screen.
  156.                     To add an ingredient, press the "INSERT" key or the "I"
  157.                     key.  A new line will be inserted, and you will be
  158.                     prompted first for the ingredient quantity, then the
  159.                     unit of measure, and, finally, the ingredient name.
  160.  
  161.                     The quantity can be entered as either a common fraction
  162.                     (i.e., 1/2) or as the decimal equivalent (i.e., 0.5),
  163.                     but will be displayed in the format selected on the
  164.                     Maintenance/Setup Screen (MM comes setup to display
  165.                     common fractions; if you want to see decimal
  166.                     equivalents, simply change the format option on the
  167.                     Maintenance/Setup Screen).  The quantity field will
  168.                     also accept an "H", to allow a heading to be entered
  169.                     for a group of ingredients.

  171.                     Repeat the steps above for each ingredient you wish to
  172.                     enter.  After all ingredients have been entered, press
  173.                     the "ESC" key to proceed to the direction entry screen.
  174.  
  175.                     Each line of recipe directions can be added just as
  176.                     ingredients are added - simply press the "I" or
  177.                     "Insert" keys to create a new line, enter the line of
  178.                     text, then press return.  Also, there is a complete
  179.                     "word-wrap" feature available.  If you continue typing
  180.                     past the end of the line, the cursor will automatically
  181.                     break between words and continue on the next line.
  182.                     When all directions have been entered, press the "ESC"
  183.                     key again.

  185.                     If you make a mistake and wish to delete an ingredient
  186.                     or a line of direction text, use the up/down arrow keys
  187.                     to position that line to the center of the display
  188.                     window, then press the F10 key.

  191.                SEARCHING FOR RECIPES
  192.                     Selecting 'S' from the main menu takes you to the heart
  193.                     of Meal-Master.  Here you can specify search criteria
  194.                     and have Meal-Master find the recipes that match.  You

  206.                     can instruct Meal-Master to select only those recipes
  207.                     that:
  208.  
  209.                          a)  Contain a certain word or phrase in their
  210.                              title;
  211.                          b)  Reference a certain category (ie, "Soups" or
  212.                              "Main Dishes");
  213.                          c)  Use a specific ingredient;
  214.                          d)  Any combination of the above.
  215.  
  216.                     Once you have entered your search criteria, pressing
  217.                     "S" will start the search.  The number and title of
  218.                     each recipe that qualifies will be listed.  If you
  219.                     start the search without entering any search criteria,
  220.                     all recipes in the file will be listed.  Note that a
  221.                     search may be stopped at any time by pressing the ESC
  222.                     key.

  225.                LISTING, REVISING, and MARKING
  226.                     Recipes found by the search function will be followed
  227.                     by a prompt asking if your wish to List, Revise, or
  228.                     Mark any of them.
  229.  
  230.                     If you type an "L", another prompt will ask if you want
  231.                     the recipe listed on the screen or on your printer.  If
  232.                     you select the printer, the recipe will be printed
  233.                     using the parameters specified in the
  234.                     "Maintenance/Setup" section of the program ('M' from
  235.                     the main menu; there you can specify what size and type
  236.                     forms you are using for Recipe printouts and for
  237.                     Listings, and specify special printer controls).

  239.                     If you type 'R', you will receive the Revise menu.
  240.                     From here, you can update the selected recipe title and
  241.                     category list; add, delete or revise ingredients and
  242.                     directions; or change the number of servings.  When
  243.                     changing the number of servings, Meal-Master will ask
  244.                     if you want the ingredient quantities adjusted.  If you
  245.                     answer yes, Meal-Master will adjust all the ingredient
  246.                     quantities in the same proportions as the serving size
  247.                     change you have made!

  249.                     You can also 'Remove' a recipe from the file.  When you
  250.                     use this option, the recipe is not really deleted, but
  251.                     just marked as removed.  The recipe can still be seen
  252.                     in searches and can be 'Restored' until it is
  253.                     permanently deleted by use of the "Rebuild" option on
  254.                     the Maintenance menu.

  256.                     If you type an 'M', a prompt will ask which recipe you
  257.                     want to mark.  Enter one of the displayed recipe
  258.                     numbers and press return to mark that recipe.  Once
  259.                     some recipes are marked, you can use the 'Shopping
  260.                     List' and 'Batch Print' features on the Utilities Menu.
  261.                     These options only process marked recipes, allowing you

  272.                     to automatically print several selected recipes, or
  273.                     produce a consolidated list of ingredients to use as a
  274.                     shopping list!

  277.           ***  IMPORT/EXPORT  ***

  279.                Another important feature of Meal-Master is its ability to
  280.                export and import recipe files.  These options allow you to
  281.                move recipes between the Meal-Master database and standard
  282.                DOS files, allowing easy exchange of recipes between
  283.                Meal-Master users.  Hundreds of recipes are available in
  284.                Meal-Master export format.  They can be found on many
  285.                electronic bulletin board systems, and on the Compuserve
  286.                Information System.  By acquiring these files and importing
  287.                them into Meal-Master, you can build a large recipe database
  288.                with little or no typing!

  293.                It is impossible to cover all the features of Meal-Master in
  294.                this short file, but the preceding instructions, with some
  295.                experimentation, should get you started using Meal-Master.
