  1. Cassiterite is tin oxide.  Iron substitutes for the tin to 3% of  
  2. the crystal's weight.  Niobium and tantalum can be present in 
  3. smaller amounts.  It's hardness is 6-7.  For comparison, quartz' 
  4. hardness is 7.  The crystals are found as black or brown, some-
  5. times with a thin transparent edge over the darker material.

  7. Sinkankas notes (in _Mineralogy For Amateurs_) that cassiterite is
  8. found associated with wolframite, tourmaline, topaz, quartz, 
  9. fluoride, muscovite, lepidolite, bismuthinite, and bismuth.

  11. Cassiterite is a member of the Rutile Group of tetragonal oxides.
  12. Other members are argutite, paratellurite, plattnerite, pyrolusite,
  13. rutile, and stishovite.

  15. Tin oxide in powdered form is used to produce a fine polish on many
  16. gem materials, usually in tumbling operations.
