  7.     PART 1:  USING HYPERPAD
  8.  
  9.     If you want to learn how to get the most out of the applications, or
  10.     pads, that come with HyperPAD, this first portion of the HyperPAD User's    pads, that come with HyperPAD, this first portion of the HyperPAD User's
  11.     Guide is where you should be. Part 1 is set up to make it easy for you
  12.     to master the fundamentals and get right down to working with the pads.
  13.  
  14.     Should you read everything in Part 1?  Not necessarily. Instead, it
  15.     might be more productive for you to look through the following overview
  16.     of the chapters in Part 1 to see which ones address your particular
  17.     needs and interests as a HyperPAD user.
  18.  
  19.     Let's begin with the chapter that all HyperPAD users must go through.
  20.  
  21.         0  Chapter 1, "Getting Started," tells how to install HyperPAD (if
  22.            your computer has a hard disk), how to start it, how to set it up
  23.            for your system, and how to get technical support. Once you've
  24.            got HyperPAD running, you can begin using the appropriate printed
  25.            and on-line resources to learn how to use it.
  26.  
  27.     Chapters 2-8 explain how to operate HyperPAD and discuss the major pads
  28.     that come with it. These chapters are especially recommended if you're
  29.     using HyperPAD for the first time or if you need a review of HyperPAD.

  31.         0  Chapter 2, "Fundamentals of Using HyperPAD," explains the basic
  32.            terminology, concepts, features, and procedures involved in
  33.            working with HyperPAD. Chapter 2 is critical, because this is the
  34.            only place where the basics are explained in detail. In later
  35.            chapters, it will be assumed that you've mastered the material
  36.            covered in Chapter 2.

  38.         0  Chapter 3, "The Home Pad," presents the pad that serves as your
  39.            gateway to HyperPAD's major functions. Chapter 3 is another
  40.            critical chapter, because you need to know how to operate the
  41.            Home pad in order to be able to access all the other pads that
  42.            come with HyperPAD.

  44.         0  Chapter 4, "Managing Files," will be of interest if you want to
  45.            learn how to use HyperPAD's DOS Shell to greatly simplify your
  46.            file-management chores. By mastering the DOS Shell, you can
  47.            eliminate practically forever the need to work from the DOS
  48.            prompt.

  57.         0  Chapter 5, "The On-Line Tutorial," shows you how to use
  58.            HyperPAD's interactive Tutorial most effectively. If you're the
  59.            type of person who learns best from hands-on experience, you
  60.            might want to finish Chapter 1, then skip ahead to this chapter
  61.            and start your journey through HyperPAD by browsing around in the
  62.            Tutorial to get a feel for how the program works. After that, you
  63.            could return to the earlier chapters and deepen your
  64.            understanding of HyperPAD.

  66.         0  Chapter 6, "The Help System," explains HyperPAD's network of
  67.            on-line resources, which can provide fast, specific answers to
  68.            your questions about how particular pads work or about how
  69.            HyperPAD works in general. If you're new to HyperPAD and think
  70.            you might need a helping hand as you learn the program, this
  71.            chapter is for you.

  73.         0  Chapter 7, "The Phone Pad System," presents the key procedures
  74.            required to work with the Phone pad, the Phone Dialer pad, the
  75.            Track Call pad, and the Take Message pad. If you use the phone
  76.            frequently in your work and want to learn how HyperPAD can help
  77.            you organize and manage your phone records, print labels, dial
  78.            calls, record call histories, take phone messages on-line, and
  79.            much more, this chapter is for you.

  81.         0  Chapter 8, "The Daily Planner Pad," shows you how HyperPAD can
  82.            put the capacity of a giant stack of daily planners right at your
  83.            fingertips. If you want to manage your time more effectively,
  84.            check out this chapter.

  86.     In Chapters 9 and 10, we move beyond the basics and discuss some
  87.     relatively specialized HyperPAD features. If you're interested in
  88.     learning how to perform the functions described there, you should first
  89.     become comfortable using HyperPAD.

  91.         0  Chapter 9, "Adding and Manipulating Information," expands
  92.            considerably upon the rather rudimentary instructions for adding
  93.            and deleting information that were presented back in Chapter 2.
  94.            Here you will find more sophisticated techniques for entering
  95.            information into your pads as well as instructions for using
  96.            HyperPAD's editing commands (Cut, Copy, Paste, and Delete) and
  97.            database capabilities to work with that information. You'll also
  98.            learn how to use the Import command to bring data created or
  99.            stored in other programs into HyperPAD fields and how to use the
  100.            Export command to send data created or stored in HyperPAD to
  101.            files in a number of other programs. If you plan to use HyperPAD
  102.            as a flat-file database program, this chapter is a must.

  111.         0  Chapter 10, "Printing," tells you how to set up your printer, how
  112.            to give HyperPAD instructions regarding the dimensions and
  113.            orientation of your printed page, and how to print out
  114.            information in a variety of formats.

  116.     After reading the preceding overview of "Using HyperPAD," you should
  117.     know which of the chapters here will be of immediate interest in helping
  118.     you learn about the HyperPAD features you especially want to use. If
  119.     this overview has whetted your curiosity about other HyperPAD features,
  120.     you may want to check out additional chapters once you've mastered the
  121.     features you're most concerned with. And you've probably determined that
  122.     you can safely skip one or more of the chapters in Part 1 because they
  123.     describe features you don't plan to use.

  125.     Let's turn to Chapter 1 so you can get HyperPAD installed, started, and
  126.     set up on your system. After that, you can proceed to the portions of
  127.     "Using HyperPAD" that you want to concentrate on.
