If you feel uncomfortable with this running around for estimates, a dealer
for your make vehicle is, generally, reliable for their repair work. There
is not a really safe, sure reliable formula for going to auto repair shops,
I'm sorry to say. People out to make a fast, easy buck abound today. Let
me point out a remedy which you might try if you feel you received the short
end of the stick . . . Call a local TV station who has a consumer complaint
line. That was done locally and the investigative reporter found more com-
plaints than he had ever seen on any story in his career. They had a S-10
Blazer tuned up, pulled one spark plug wire and went to several shops for
estimates. The estimates were as varied as the shops. Only ONE shop said a
sparkplug wire was off and replaced it at no charge (other than the diagnos-
tic equipment charge). You can see why I say there is no reliable formula
for picking out a repair man. But let me tell you, the TV station made
believers out of all the repair shops in the city after the story ran.
