  4.       Although ALPHAQUOTE was originally written for traditional
  5.       typesetters, it is also appropriate for Desktop Publishers.  Because
  6.       the nature of DTP production differs from traditional typesetting, a
  7.       few adjustments need to be made in order to guarantee accuracy.  The
  8.       setup file DTP.DTA supplied with the program is based on national
  9.       averages and should be used initially.  However, using the correct
  10.       hourly rates for your organization is critical to successful estimating
  11.       and a successful business. Please make sure your rates correctly
  12.       reflect:

  15.         Equipment Depreciation
  16.         Salaries
  17.         Employee Benefits
  18.         Supplies
  19.         Deliveries
  20.         Advertising
  21.         Repairs
  22.         Bad Debts

  24.       The best method is to have your accountant calculate your hourly rates.
  25.       A general "rule of thumb", however, is to multiply the salary times 3. 
  26.       For example, if you wished to pay yourself $10 per hour, your hourly
  27.       rate to charge your clients would be $30 dollars an hour.  Although not
  28.       very scientific it is surprisingly accurate.

  30.       █   Always complete the estimate answering all of the questions.
  31.           Pasteup is an automatic function in DTP whereas ALPHAQUOTE
  32.           handles typesetting and pasteup as two separate operations.  The
  33.           best procedure is to split your DTP hourly rate in half and use
  34.           those figures for typeset and pasteup rate.  For example, if you
  35.           charge $35 per hour,  then the typeset rate would be $17.50 and
  36.           the pasteup rate would be $17.50.  Answer yes to the Paste Up
  37.           Y/N question and answer the rest of the questions to complete
  38.           the estimate.

  40.        █  Use the productivity % to fine tune ALPHAQUOTE.  This is a
  41.           percentage of efficiency of the person doing the work.  85% is
  42.           considered average.  By raising this percentage the price will
  43.           be lowered--it takes a more efficient operator less time to
  44.           produce the job.  Lowering the percentage conversely increases
  45.           the cost.  Find an average that works best for your
  46.           organization.  Avoid basing estimates on you most efficient
  47.           employee--if a less efficient person actually does the work you
  48.           lose money.
