Users obtain quality software at greatly reduced costs. ==== Hangman Overview: Maximum length of a word/phrase ....... 20 Maximum number of words/phrases ....... 60 Maximum number of word lists .......... 60 The words/phrases may contain punctuation marks, numbers, and spaces. Thus, short phrases are allowed. For example: MATH IS FUN 4TH OF JULY CAN'T You are allowed six mistakes before the word is displayed. Teacher Management is available from this program. With it you may enter, edit, or remove word lists. Use Ctrl-A from Main Menu to activate management. ==== The Hangman Main Menu Screen Current List: States Number of words: 50 / /__ Name of the active word list. Note: If there is no active word list, this item will be blank and the number of words will be blank. 1) Select Word List (2 lists available) Choose this option to load a word list from the disk into the computer's memory. 2) Play Hangman Choose this option to begin playing hangman using the active word list. 3) Change drive:path Choose this option to select a new location for your data (word lists). For example: B: <--- data is on drive B C:\HM <--- data is on drive C, subdirectory HM ==== To Make a Selection from the Main Menu: Move the highlighter by tapping the UP or DOWN arrow keys, OR Tap the number of your selection, THEN Tap the ENTER key. ==== Choice 1 --- Select a Word List After selecting (1) from the Main Menu, the computer will display the following: __ Current drive and path __Free space on disk / \ Directory of A:\ 1449984 bytes free Current List: Number of words: \__ Active word list (if any) 1) COMPUTER (20) <---- Word lists on the current drive. The number in the parentheses is the number of words in 2) STATES (50) that particular list. To select a word list: Move the highlighter by tapping the UP or DOWN arrow keys, OR Tap the number of your selection, THEN Tap the ENTER key. ==== Choice 2 --- Play Hangman Hangman will shuffle the words in the active word list and present them in random order. As each new word is displayed, the gallows is drawn and the alphabet is displayed. The letters of the word in question are replaced by dashes (punctuation and numerals are not replaced) and the "word holder" is displayed at the top of the screen. To play, you must guess the letters that make up the word. As you guess a letter by tapping it on the keyboard, it will disappear from the list of unused letters at the bottom of the screen. If the word in question contains the letter, all occurrences of it will be displayed in the "word holder". If the letter is not part of the word in question, a portion of the body will be drawn on the gallows. You are allowed 6 incorrect guesses. The figure appears as follows: 1st) the head 2nd) the face 3rd) the neck 4th) the torso 5th) the right leg 6th) the left leg. Once your entire figure appears, the entire correct answer will also be displayed. Special keys: Tap ALT-S to skip to the next word. Tap ESC to return to the Main Menu. ==== Choice 3 --- Change drive:path This selection allows you to reset the location of the word lists. The program will automatically use the location of the Hangman program when it is first run. If you have a second disk drive, or if you are running Hangman from a fixed drive (drive C:), you may want to store your word lists on a separate data disk or in a data subdirectory. The syntax for entering the new data location is: d:\path where "d" is the drive letter, and "path" is the name of the subdirectory. Examples: B: data is stored on drive B A: data is stored on drive A C:\DATA data is stored on fixed disk C in subdirectory \DATA C:\HM\DATA data is stored on fixed disk C in subdirectory \HM\DATA ==== The Teacher Menu Selections (Activated by Ctrl-A): The Ctrl-A key added three additional selection the the Main Menu. These three options allow the teacher to create new word lists, to edit existing word lists, and to remove word lists from the disk. The new menu will display a menu as shown below. 1) Select Word List (2 lists available) 2) Play Hangman 3) Change drive:path 4) Enter New Word List | These three selections are added to | the Main Menu. They allow you to edit 5) Edit Current Word List | the active word list or to create a | a new word list. 6) Save Current Word List | Special Note: To remove a word list from the disk, enter selection 1 (Select Word List), highlight the list to be removed, then tap the DEL key. ==== Choice 4 --- Enter New Word List A. Type in each word or phrase. Then tap ENTER. Each word list can contain a maximum of 60 words. B. Each word/phrase may have up to 20 characters (letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation marks). C. As you add each word or phrase, the list will automatically be sorted alphabetically. The words/phrases will also be displayed in three columns of 20. D. For editing your word/phrase while in this mode, tap the following: SPACEBAR...........To skip/insert spaces. INS key............To insert letters. RIGHT cursor key...To move to the right. LEFT cursor key....To move to the left. DEL key............To delete the letter that is highlighted. BACKSPACE key......To delete the letter to the left of the cursor. E. If, after pressing the Enter key, you discover you've made an error in typing a word, wait until you have finished adding the rest of the words in your list, then exit to the Main Menu, and then enter selection #3 (Edit Current Word List). You may then fix any typing errors. ==== Choice 5 --- Edit Current Word List Upon choosing this option, the computer will display the following: Current List: COMPUTER.HM Number of words: 20 1) BASIC <----The words will be displayed in alphabetical order. 2) BOOT The maximum number of words in a list is 60, which 3) BYTE will be displayed in three columns of twenty words. 4) COMPUTER ---------------------------------------------------- 5) DATA BASE To INSERT a word into the list, tap the INS key. After 6) HARDWARE you type in the word and tap the Enter key, the word 7) INPUT DEVICE will be inserted into the list in alphabetical order. ---------------------------------------------------- To EDIT or REMOVE a word, use the four arrow keys to move the highlighter to the word in question, then tap the E or Del key to Edit or Delete the highlighted word. __ Edit the highlighted word / ______ Add a word to the list / / ___ Remove the highlighted word / / / E=Edit, Ins=insert new words, Del=remove word ==== Choice 5 --- Edit Current Word List (Continued) Editing a word/phrase * Use the RIGHT and LEFT arrow keys to move the typing cursor to the right or left. * Tap the INS key to toggle (Switch) between overtype and insert modes. * Tap CTRL-Y to CLEAR from the typing cursor to the end of the word/phrase. * Special Note: In order to cancel Editing or Inserting, simply tap the ESC key. The DEL command cannot be cancelled. Once it is executed, you will have to tap the INS key in order to re-enter the deleted word/phrase. ==== Choice 6 --- Save Current Word List 1) COMPUTER (20) <---- The list of current word lists on the disk. 2) STATES (50) Move the highlighted to one of these if you 3) New Word List wish to REPLACE the list on the disk with the \ current word list. \ \____________ Move the highlighter to this option to add the current word list as a NEW entry on the disk. When this option is selected, the computer will ask for the file (or list) name. Enter file name: _ Type in the file name and tap the Enter key. File names may not exceed 8 characters, and may only be made of letters, numbers, and dashes. At this point your file should be saved. You can verify it was saved by referring to the Teacher Menu, Choice 1 (Select Word List). Your new file name should appear alphabetically. The number of words on the list appear in parentheses. Also, your new file should be indicated under the "CURRENT LIST" heading. end
