- * Notes about Startup Mode - and Heading Position Problems in Caribbean *
- *************************************************************************
-
- For some unknown reason, when the usual FS4 Automatic startup
- mode positions you over other area than Florida, all PR Runways
- will be out of their regular heading position. This appears to
- be true for any airport placed in the Caribbean Basin. To solve
- this we have included a Startup Mode. See your FS 4.0 manual
- for more information on handling Startup Modes.
-
-
- HOW TO STARTUP PUERTO RICO SCENERY
-
- Start FS4 as usual, then in the Mode Library (off the Mode Menu), find the
- Puerto Rico Startup Mode and press the left number beside it; you may want
- to then press the letter 'E' to auto load this file the next time you restart.
-
- Restart your system...the Puerto Rico Startup Mode will now position you
- at Miami Int'l, or nearby. (You may not see the airport (especially if
- you don't have SD-7 or Mike Barrs' Miami scenery file, but don't worry
- about it). Now, load Puerto Rico San Juan Int'l Mode or Isla Grande, SJ
- Mode. Now you are ready to start your flight.
-
- (Remember to turn on Auto load Static Scenery, or manually load the file
- called PR-CNTER.SC1 at this time.)

- DETAILED AIPORTS
-
- Many of the airports found in PTO-RICO are limited to the runways only.
- This is partly due to limited information about details of that airport
- but mostly to keep the frame rate on FS 4.0 within reasonable limits.
- Here is a listing of some of the airports --AIM-- has detailed out for us:
-
- San Juan Int'l - Taxiway and Automobile Parking, buildings, etc.
-
- Isla Grande (My home airport) - You will see Hotels at take off, as
- well as the San Jose Lagoon.
-
- Dorado - This is a real forest airport.
-
- Borinquen - Ridge on the northwest coast, left turn.
-
-
-
- FREQUENTLY USED ROUTES BETWEEN PUERTO RICAN AIRPORTS
- (from Runway 8 or 10 at SJ Intl)
-
- SJ to Isla Grande (MY HOME AIRPORT) - Take off left, turn and look to
- your left 3 miles out
-
- San Juan Int'l (SJ) to St Thomas - Heading 106 to STT VOR 108.6
-
- SJ to St Croix - Head towards NDB 480 (Fajardo) then Right Heading 135
- to COY NDB 290 or/and VOR 108.2
-
- SJ to Vieques - Same as above. Vieques is the first long island to your
- right.
-
- SJ to Ponce - Heading 236 to PSE Vor 109.0 (climb above 3700 feet)
-
- SJ to Borinquen - Heading 284 to BQN VOR 113.5, or just follow the
- northwest coast
-
- SJ to Arecibo - Same as above. The airport is before the Rio Grande
- River (second river in that direction).
-
- SJ to Mayaguez - Heading 274 to MAZ VOR 110.6 (climb above 3000 feet)
-
- SJ to Fajardo - Heading 106 to NDB 480; turn right at east coast.
-
- SJ to Roosvelt Road - Same as above (Roosevelt is a Military Restricted
- Airport, so I would never land there in real life.)
-
- SJ to Humacao - Same as above, but fly few more miles south.
-
- SJ to Dorado - Head west along the coast. The airport is past Dorado
- River (First river in that direction)
-
-
-
- SPECIAL APPROACHES AND TRANSITIONS
-
- Tango Transition:
- This is the regular transition when you want to pass San Juan Int'l
- Airport and continue to the west of the Island, in order to maintain
- the ARSA and the regular approach path of JET's inbound approach for
- landing in SJ runway 8 & 10.
-
- Maintain 2000 feet when you fly west towards the Island along the
- northern coast.
-
- When you pick up the Fajardo NDB 480 (really 1480), fly the Tango
- Transition by following 65th Infantry Avenue until you see Plaza
- Carolina Mall...then turn right and fly directly over San Juan Tower.
- After you're over the Tower, turn left to a 284 heading - don't pass
- over San Juan Capitol, because it's actually a RECTRICTED area
- (at least in real life). Now fly 1/2 mile out to clear the Tango
- Transition and return to regular airspace.
-
-
- Culebra approach (Single Engine Aircraft only):
- Set Auto Load Static Scenery to ON before take off.
-
- This is one of the PR area's most difficult approaches.
- The approach is between two mountains - fly on heading
- 106 and you'll see the island to your right after leaving
- the PR east coast.
-
- Enter the pattern between the two mountains approaching
- from the north at a south heading and at or above 600 feet...
- Use flaps early and slow to 70 knots before you get between
- the mountains...Pay attention to the other side, the runway it's
- right there, and to your left...cut the power when you see it.
-
-
- Flying to/from St Thomas, VI:
- ILS approach on 110.1 - fly on heading 106 - you will pass over
- (or at least near) Culebra.
-
-
- HOW TO FLY BETWEEN PUERTO RICO AND MIAMI, FL
-
- San Juan Intl to Miami Intl via Grand Turk, Providenciales and Nassau:
-
- First set "Auto Load Static Scenery" to the OFF position after you
- load the PR-CNTER.SC1 Static Scenery file. Use FS 4.0b Default
- Scenery - do NOT load SD-7 yet, or you may experience a
- "teleporter" effect that will put you somewhere off the west coast
- of Florida (!).
-
- Take off from SJ or Isla Grande Airport heading out from SJ VOR
- 114.0, northwest at 308 degrees. Grand Turk Island is located 321
- miles out.
- As soon as the VOR signal disappear LOAD PR-Bahamas Static Scenery
- Tune your VOR to 114.2 and NDB 232; when you pick it up, intercept
- the 308 radial to Grand Turk VOR. (It will take a time until you
- get the signal, so be patient or - if you wish - use the slew
- mode). Once you arrive in the Grand Turk Island area, you could
- land on Grand Turk or continue onward to Providenciales or Miami.
-
- When you are over the VOR tune NDB to 387 (Providenciales NDB).
- Do not lose your present heading of 308 (Providenciales NDB is
- only for reference and the neddle will swep to left)...Continue
- with 308 heading, and soon you'll loose the Grand Turk VOR signal.
- Stay on the 308 heading... when the NDB 387 (Providenciales)
- needle points backwards, tune in Stella Maris NDB 320...the
- heading should be between 306 and 308. Head to that NDB.
-
- After a time you'll see Stella Maris Island. As soon as the
- needle swaps back, turn to a new heading of 274. Now you can
- load SD-7 and tune to Nassau 112.7 VOR. After a long time
- you'll have the signal and enter the SD-7 area, but continue
- on the present heading. You should see Abaco Island, where
- Congo Town, Bahamas is located, using your present heading.
- (You may feel somewhat upset with the green area below but don't
- blame this on us - it's a bug from SD-7 and will soon disappear).
-
- When the VOR needle points to your right, tune to 116.7 VOR and at
- the signal fly directly towards it. When you arrive over the VOR
- turn to heading 270 and head towards Biscayne VOR 117.1 (if you
- have Static Scenery FLS001MB.SC1 load it now - this scenery file
- and Mike Barrs' excellent Miami area scenery file are made to
- blend together here).
-
-
- Miami Intl to San Juan Intl via Nassau, Providenciales and Grand Turk:
-
- First, set "Auto Load Static Scenery" to the OFF position after
- you've loaded FLS001MB.SC1 (if applicable - it is available on
- Compuserve's Library 12 in the Gamers' Forum for downloading).
- Now Load the SD-7 scenery disk. You will be over the Miami Ramp.
- Taxi to runway 9R and take off.
-
- Take Heading 94 to intercept Bimini VOR 116.7 and tune to Stella
- Maris NDB 320. After you lose the Bimini VOR signal, load the
- PR-BAHAM.SC1 scenery file and switch to the FS 4.0b Default
- Scenery. Fly on a 94 degree heading until you get the Stella Maris
- 320 NDB signal...
-
- When over the station, turn right to a 128 degree heading and
- after a few minute tune to Providenciales NDB 387 and VOR 114.2..
- Continue.
-
- It will take some time before you get the signal, so be patient
- or jump into "hyperspace" (slew mode). You could land on
- Providenciales if you want, or continue onward to Grand Turk and
- Puerto Rico.
-
- You'll get the NDB signal first but continue on your present
- heading of 128. Soon you'll get the VOR signal on 114.2.
- After the VOR signal comes on tune to NDB 232. This will take
- you over Grand Turk Island. Land there if you want, or stick to
- your present heading towards PR.
-
- When you lose the VOR signal, load the PR-CNTER.SC1 and continue
- to fly on heading 128. You'll see the Island in a couple or
- minutes. When you do, fly direct to it.
-
- Tune to San Juan 114.0 VOR and Dorado NDB 391, continue your
- flight directly towards Dorado NDB. When over the NDB, turn
- left to a 125 heading to intercept the SJ runway 8 ILS on 110.3.
- (Also tune to Patty 330 - this is the LOM.)
-
-
