- Background:
- ~~~~~~~~~~
- These files model the eastern portion of the county of Kent in England. This
- area includes such famous towns as Canterbury and Dover. The model is based
- around the airfield of RAF Manston, which lies about 10 miles north-east of
- Canterbury.
-
-
- RAF Manston
- ~~~~~~~~~~~
- The most detailed area on the EKENT scenery file is the airfield of RAF
- Manston. There has been an airfield here since well before World War 2, and
- during WW2 Manston featured as a fighter base early in the Battle of Britain,
- until put effectively out of action by the German bombing offensive against
- RAF airfields.
-
- For the rest of the war, Manston was a welcome point for damaged aircraft of
- all types to land after sustaining damage in combat over enemy territory.
-
- After the war Manston was greatly developed by a large American Air Force
- presence, which continued until arouind 1960. It was the Americans who were
- initially responsible for the main paved runway.
-
- Since the 1960s Manston has been the base for an RAF Search & Rescue helicopter
- flight, serves as a Major Diversionary Airfield for southern Britain, and is
- also the home of the RAF Fire School.
-
- There is a civilian terminal and hard-standing area which is used for seasonal
- holiday flights to Europe, and is the home of a large organisation which
- repairs Boeing 707 aircraft from all over the world.
-
- Airfield Statistics :
-
- Rwy 11/29 - 2752m paved.
- Rwy 06/24 - 792m grass.
-
- N.B. No ILS, Manston is fitted with Precision Approach Radar on 11/29.
-
- VOR on 112.3 added by me at intersection of 2 runways - usefull for
- extended centreline information at long range. Its not realistic but
- it sure helps !

-
- Other Scenery Features
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- I will summarize the main points to look for on the East Kent scenery.
-
- Starting at the north eastern 'tip' of the coast you will see the lighthouse
- at North Foreland.
-
- South east of Manston, on the north side of the bay is Ramsgate. I live in
- the large yellow/orange building close to the coast, and my white car is
- parked outside (could'nt resist it !) A prominent feature of Ramsgate is its
- harbour and ferry terminal.
-
- South of Ramsgate is Pegwell Bay, with the river Stour running into it. Just
- a short distance up-river is the power station at Richborough. Following the
- coast southwards, you will find several octagonal buildings. These are the
- Coastguard Marine Rescue Coordination Centre outside Dover. Slightly further
- round the coast you will find the port of Dover itself. Dover Castle will
- be seen overlooking the port, complete with its Saxon church.
-
- North west of Dover is the historic city of Canterbury, easy to distinguish
- by its ring road around the old city centre. Here you will find the famous
- Canterbury Cathedral in pleasant grounds.
