- The Help System provides on-line help for all Extend-A-Name Plus
- commands. Preceding the alphabetical listing of Extend-A-Name Plus
- commands are some conceptual topics designed to assist the first
- time or occasional user with the program.
-
- When you press ²■[F1]²■, the Help Index Window will appear in the
- center of the screen. Each command is listed alphabetically. Some
- commands will be listed more than once and will have extra informa-
- tion in parenthesis detailing in which Window they are found.
-
- Use ²■[■]²■, ²■[■]²■, ²■[PgUp]²■ or ²■[PgDn]²■ to
- highlight the desired command and press ²■[┘■]²■.
-
- A larger window will appear with the Help text. There may be more
- information for the command than can be displayed in the window.
- Use the cursor keys to move the highlight bar to the bottom of the
- screen to scroll through the rest of the information.
-
- When finished with Help press ²■[Esc]²■ to clear the Help Window,
- OR press ²■[┘■]²■ to return to the Help Index.
-
- We hope that you enjoy using Extend-A-Name Plus and find it a useful
- tool in your daily work. If you have more questions or suggestions
- on how we could improve Extend-A-Name Plus or the Help system,
- please call World Software Corp. at (201)444-3290.

- When you Save a file the Create/Save Window automatically pops-up
- if the Triggers for the application program are active. The
- Create/Save Window displays:
-
- 1) The Drive and Path where the file will be saved.
- 2) The DOS filename which consists of the user's initials
- (supplied during installation, or changed with MAINCNF, USERCNF
- or ²■[F7]²■-Configuration) and a sequential number. For
- example, if your initials are USR, the first file you create
- with Extend-A-Name Plus would have a DOS filename of USR0001.
- 3) A blank line where you can input a 60 character Extended Name
- describing the file and its contents.
- 4) The Owner's Initials (user's initials).
-
- Use ²■[■]²■ and ²■[■]²■ to move between these parameters in
- order to edit the values displayed.
-
- Once you press ²■[┘■]²■, Extend-A-Name Plus will display the
- Library Window. A Library is like a file folder where similar files
- are stored. For example, you might have a Library for Memos, anoth-
- er for Letters and a third for Schedules. You can assign the file
- to an existing Library or create a new Library for the file.
-
- After you have assigned the file to a Library, you will be returned
- to your application.
-
- When Resaving an existing file:
- - You can change the DOS filename to create a new version of the
- file, leaving the original intact. Use ²■[■]²■ to move to
- the DOS filename field. Edit the existing name, OR press ²■
- [F2]²■ to assign the next Auto-Name.
- - If you change the Extended Name without changing the DOS file-
- name, when you press ²■[┘■]²■, a window will pop-up asking
- whether you want to "Overwrite file with the same DOS name."
- Answering Yes, replaces the existing file while No leaves the
- original intact and saves the new version with the next available
- Auto-name.
- >0200
- There are 2 ways of ²■R²■etrieving a file into your application:
-
- A) Extend-A-Name Plus will automatically pop-up whenever your
- application prompts for a DOS filename.
- B) Manual pop-up using ²■[ALT]+[HOTKEY]²■. (The Hotkey is
- usually defined as "/".)
-
- Open the Library that contains the file, or select the MASTER
- LIBRARY and scroll though the cross-indexed list of files contained
- in the subdirectory. In the File Window highlight the desired file
- and press ²■[G]²■, OR highlight ²■G²■et and press ²■[┘■].
- ²■The file will be retrieved into the work space.
-
- You can also use the Find command to locate files once you have
- Opened any Library.
- >0300
- When you instruct your application to Resave an existing file the
- Create/Save Window automatically pops-up. It contains:
-
- 1) The Drive and Path where the file will be saved
- 2) The DOS filename
- 3) The Extended Name
- 4) The Owner's Initials
-
- Use ²■[■]²■ and ²■[■]²■ move between these fields in order
- to edit the values displayed.
-
- You can change the DOS filename to create a new version of the file,
- leaving the original intact. Use ²■[■]²■ to move to the DOS
- filename field. Type in a new DOS filename, or press ²■[F2]²■ to
- assign the next Auto-Name.
-
- If you change the Extended Name without changing the DOS filename,
- when you press ²■[┘■]²■, a window will pop-up asking whether
- you want to "Overwrite file with the same DOS name." Answering Yes,
- replaces the existing file while No leaves the original intact and
- saves the new version with the next available Auto-name.
- >0400
- Files can be organized into ²■Libraries²■ within each subdirec-
- tory. A Library is like a file folder where similar files are
- stored. For example, you might have a Library for Memos, another
- for Letters and a third for Schedules.
-
- The left column of Library Window contains a listing of the Librar-
- ies in the current subdirectory. The right columns display the
- number of files and the total number of bytes in each Library.
-
- The first item listed is always the MASTER LIBRARY. This contains
- a master listing or cross-index of the subdirectory contents.
-
- To see the files assigned to a particular Library, use the cursor
- keys to scroll through the list. Highlight the desired Library and
- select ²■O²■pen.
-
- The commands in the Library Window are:
- Open - Display a listing of files assigned to that Library
- Find - Find a Library name
- Path - Look or Change to a different drive or subdirectory
- Utilities - Create a new Library
- - Delete an empty Library
- - Rename an existing Library
- - Print a log of files assigned to the Library
- Setup - Brings existing files into Extend-A-Name Plus
-
- Extend-A-Name Plus supports up to 64 Libraries and 999 files per
- subdirectory. The larger the number of Libraries and Files the more
- memory Extend-A-Name Plus will take. These values are controlled
- using the MAINCNF and USERCNF programs stored in the same subdirec-
- tory as the XNPLUS program files. See the CONFIGURATION chapter in
- the manual for more information.
- >0500
- Extend-A-Name Plus allows you to assign your files 60 character des-
- criptive names. Any character can be used in the Extended Name
- including characters used by foreign languages.
-
- Extended Names can be organized into Libraries within each subdir-
- ectory. A Library is like a file folder where similar files are
- stored. For example, you might have a Library for Memos, another
- for Letters and a third for Schedules.
-
- The File Window gives a listing of all files assigned to the select-
- ed Library. The Extended Name is always displayed in the left
- column. The right column can display the DOS filename, Owner, or
- Date/Time last updated. This can be changed using ²■[F5]²■-Show.
- The sort order is set using the ²■[F4]²■-Sort.
-
- The File Window commands are:
- Get - Retrieve the file
- Find - Search Extended Names for the desired word or phrase
- Path - Look or Change to a different drive or subdirectory
- Utilities - Archive the file to a designated archive drive or
- subdirectory. A diskette drive can be designated as
- the archive drive for use as off-line storage.
- - Copy file to another drive or subdirectory
- - Delete the file from the system
- - Move file to another Library, drive or subdirectory
- - Tag or mark multiple files allowing groups of files
- to be copied, moved, archived or deleted
- - Untag, or remove, the file Tag
- - Xdelete removes the file from the list of Extended
- Names but does not delete the file from the disk
- - Rename the file's Extended Name or DOS filename
- - View the file contents without retrieving it into
- the work space. Extend-A-Name Plus currently
- supports View for WordPerfect 4.2/5.0 and ASCII text
- files. All other files can be viewed as Raw-data
- without any formatting.
- Libraries - Return to the Libraries Window
- >0700
- The Create/Save Window pops-up when you Save or Resave a file. It
- has 4 fields that contain information about the file:
-
- ■ Save to Path - The drive:\directory where the file will be
- saved
- ■ DOS filemame - The Auto-name provided by Extend-A-Name Plus
- consisting of the user initials and a sequential filename
- ■ Extended Name - A description, up to 60 characters long, of the
- file contents
- ■ Owner's Initials - Defaults to the user initials
-
- Use ²■[■]²■ or ²■[■]²■ to move to the desired field to
- change the information displayed.
-
- The Auto-name feature automatically creates a DOS filename for new
- files using the user initials supplied during installation or
- changed with USERCNF or ²■[F7]²■-Configuration, and a sequential
- number.
-
- When Auto-name is On, and the Create/Save Window pops-up, the DOS
- filename will contain the next Auto-name and the cursor will be
- ready for the user to input the Extended Name.
-
- When Auto-name is Off, and the Create/Save Window pops-up, the cur-
- sor will be ready for the user to input the DOS filename. When you
- press ²■[┘■]²■ the cursor will move down to the Extendend Name.
-
- If you are Resaving a file, the message - NOTE: DOS filename already
- exists - will appear to the right of the DOS filename. To Resave
- a file with the same DOS filename and Extended Name, press
- ²■[┘■]. ²■
- >1001
- Display the files assigned to the highlighted Library.
- >1002
- If you have created many Libraries, you can use the ²■F²■ind com-
- mand to search for a specific Library. In the Library Window press
- ²■[F]²■, OR highlight ²■F²■ind and press ²■[┘■]²■.
-
- The following message appears:
-
- Find Library: «■
-
- As you type the display narrows to show only those Libraries that
- match the search string. Once the search string is long enough to
- be unique, only one Library will be displayed. To Open the high-
- lighted Library, press ²■[┘■]²■.
- >1101
- The Assign to Library Window lists the Libraries in the current
- subdirectory. It appears when you are:
- ■ Saving a file for the first time
- ■ Moving a file to a different Library
- ■ Running the Setup command to bring existing files into Extend-
- A-Name Plus
-
- If you do not want to place the file(s) into any of the existing
- Libraries you can create a new Library by selecting ²■N²■ew-
- library.
-
- If you select ²■N²■ew-Library, you will be prompted to input a NEW
- LIBRARY NAME of up to 55 characters. Once you press ²■[┘■]²■
- to accept the new Library, the file(s) will be assigned to the new
- Library which will appear alphabetically in the Library listing.
-
- If you press ²■[Esc]²■ while saving a new file, the file will be
- placed in the UNASSIGNED FILES Library.
-
- If you press ²■[Esc]²■ while running the Setup command or Moving
- a file, Extend-A-Name Plus will cancel the operation and return you
- to the preceding window.
- >1102
- Before you can Delete a Library you must be sure that all of the
- files assigned to that Library have been deleted or moved. If you
- try to Delete a Library that still has files assigned to it, Extend-
- A-Name Plus will display an error message.
-
- You can verify that a Library is empty by checking the Library
- Window. The middle column displays the number of files assigned to
- each Library. This must display 0 in order to Delete the Library.
- >1103
- You may Rename a Library an any time.
- >1104
- The Print window allows you to list your files either to a print
- device or an ASCII text file. You print a log of files assigned to
- selected Libraries, or all files in the current subdirectory.
- >1141
- When you select ²■G²■o, in the Print Window, the listing of
- filenames from the highlighted, or Tagged, Libraries will be printed
- either to the printer or disk file.
- >1142
- You can print the listing of filename to a Device attached to the
- COM (serial) or LPT (parallel) ports as well as writing the list to
- Disk in an ASCII text file.
-
- When specifying a printer port, you can designate ports 1-9.
-
- When specifying print to Disk, you will not be asked to name the
- target file until you select Go, at which point you can name the
- file, specifying the drive:\path if you choose.
- >1143
- The Print Initialization string lets you send up to 25 control
- characters to your printer. The Init string controls the page
- orientation (portrait or landscape), type size (regular or con-
- densed) and other variables. You should consult your printer
- reference manual for the control characters for your printer.
- >1144
- Print Layout controls what will be printed when listing filenames.
- In order to ensure that columns of information are aligned, a
- ²■[TAB]²■ is used to separate the various elements.
-
- See the Layout section in the PRINT WINDOW chapter of the manual for
- more information.
- >1145
- The Print Margins control the blank space surrounding the printed
- listing of filenames. The default Margin settings assume that you
- are using a laser printer, which requires 1/2" top and bottom
- margins and 2 space side margins.
-
- If you are using legal paper, change the page length to 84.
-
- See the Margins section in the PRINT WINDOW chapter of the manual
- for more information.
- >1004
- The Library Utilities allow you to perform the following maintenance
- functions on your Extend-A-Name Plus Libraries:
-
- Create - Create a new Library with a with a name (up to 55
- characters) describing the files that will be
- assigned, or stored, in that Library.
- Delete - Remove an empty Library
- Rename - Change the name of an existing Library
- Print - Print a log of files assigned to a Library
- >1005
- The Setup Window displays all files in the current subdirectory that
- ARE NOT included in the list of Extended Names. These files match
- the entries in the list of Filenames to Ignore and include program,
- system, batch and temporary files.
-
- The Setup Window Commands are:
- Setup - Includes the highlighted or tagged file(s) in your
- list of Extended Names and asks you to assign them
- to a Library
- Filter - Allows you to exclude all files from the Setup list
- that do not match the specified condition
- Tag - Mark multiple files for Setup
- Untag - Remove the file Tag
- Get - Retrieve the file into your application without
- including it in the list of Extended Names
- Path - Look or Change to a different drive or subdirectory
-
- For more information about the Filenames to Ignore table, see the
- CONFIGURATION chapter in the manual.
- >1201

- ■ with the file extension DOC, type "*.DOC"
- ■ without any file extension, type "*."
- ■ that start with MEM, type "MEM*.*"
-
- Press ²■[┘■]²■ to accept the Filter. All files that have not
- been Setup that match the Filter condition will be displayed. The
- Filter command overrides the table of Filenames to Ignore, and auto-
- matically tags ALL files that comply with the specified filter. If
- no files are found the message "No files remain to be Setup!" will
- be displayed.
-
- To Setup the Tagged files press ²■[S]²■, OR highlight ²■S²■etup
- and press ²■[┘■]²■.
- >1203
- Tagging is used to mark multiple files to be either Archived,
- Copied, Deleted, Moved or Xdeleted. A Tagged file will have a
- diamond to the left of the Extended Name.
-
- Tagging is useful whenever you want to perform a task on a group of
- files. For example, you can copy a group of Tagged files to another
- drive or subdirectory, Tag a group for deletion, or use Tag to move
- a group of files to another Library or subdirectory.
-
- To ²■T²■ag a file, highlight the file, and press ²■[T]²■, OR
- highlight ²■T²■ag and press ²■[┘■]²■.
-
- To ²■T²■ag all of the files, press ²■[CTRL]+[T]²■. Extend-A-
- Name Plus will ask if you want to Tag:
-
- ■ ²■E²■very file in the subdirectory
- ■ just the files displayed on the ²■S²■creen
- ■ all files listed ²■A²■bove the highlight bar (including the
- highlighted file)
- ■ all files listed ²■B²■elow the highlight bar (including the
- highlighted file)
-
- Press the first letter of the desired option, OR highlight the
- selection and press ²■[┘■]²■.
-
- The ²■A²■bove and ²■B²■elow options can be particularly useful
- when purging a Library, or archiving files. If the files are sorted
- by Date/time last updated you can ²■T²■ag all files before, or
- after, a certain date to be Copied, Moved, Archived or Deleted.
- >1204
- Tagging is used to mark multiple files to be either Archived,
- Copied, Deleted, Moved or Xdeleted. A Tagged file will have a
- diamond to the left of the Extended Name.

- The main, or root, directory of the disk where you store your files
- is like the root of a tree. Subdirectories are like the branches
- of that tree, with Libraries being twigs on each branch, and files
- the leaves. When you issue the ²■P²■ath command you are asking
- the computer to list all of the branches of the tree.
-
- When you issue the ²■P²■ath command a listing of available drives
- will be displayed. If you have more than 15 available drives, you
- will be asked to enter the desired drive.
-
- A Path Tree of subdirectories on the selected drive will be display-
- ed. Use the cursor keys to move around the tree. Highlight the
- desired subdirectory and press ²■[┘■]²■. Depending on how many
- Libraries have been created in the target subdirectory, the File
- Window (only 2 Libraries), or the Library Window (more than 2
- Libraries) will be displayed.
- >1211
- When you use the Path or Move commands Extend-A-Name Plus first asks
- you to specify the drive. If you have more than 15 available drives
- you will be asked to enter the desired drive. Otherwise, a list of
- available drives will be displayed. Use the cursors to select the
- desired drive and press ²■[┘■]²■.
-
- A Path Tree for the selected drive will be displayed. If you select
- a drive with removable media, be sure there is a diskette or cart-
- ridge in the drive, and the drive door is closed.
- >1212
- The ²■C²■hange command issues the DOS Change Directory (CD \)
- command changing the active (default) DOS path to the highlighted
- subdirectory. The selected subdirectory remains the default until
- another Path command is issued.
- >1213
- Unlike the ²■C²■hange command, ²■L²■ook DOES NOT change the
- active (default) DOS path to the highlighted subdirectory. ²■
- Look²■ allows you to access the highlighted subdirectory temporari-
- ly. The next time Extend-A-Name Plus pops-up you will be returned
- to the default subdirectory, or the last subdirectory to which you
- issued a ²■C²■hange command.
-
- If you Get, or retrieve, a file while Looking at a subdirectory,
- when you Resave that file it will be saved in its original subdirec-
- tory. If you want it saved in the default directory, you must
- change the Save to Path parameter in the Create/Save Window.
- >1214
- When the Path Tree for a drive is displayed you can use the ²■
- F²■ind command to search for a specific subdirectory on the current
- drive. Press ²■[F]²■ in the Path Window, OR highlight ²■F²■i-

-
- You can then either ²■C²■hange or ²■L²■ook into the the high-
- lighted subdirectory by selecting the desired option and pressing
- ²■[┘■]²■.
- >1215
- When the Path Tree is displayed the ²■D²■rive command is used to
- access another drive. Select ²■[D]²■, OR highlight ²■D²■rive
- and press ²■[┘■]²■.
-
- If you have more than 15 available drives you will be asked to enter
- the desired drive. Otherwise, a list of available drives will be
- displayed. If you select a drive with removable media, be sure
- there is a diskette or cartridge in the drive, and the drive door
- is closed.
- >1216
- The ²■M²■ake-dir command allows you to create a new subdirectory
- (DOS MD command) on the current drive. When the Path Tree is dis-
- played, use the cursor keys to highlight the subdirectory UNDER
- which you wish to create the new directory. Press ²■[M]²■, OR
- highlight ²■ M²■ake-dir and press ²■[┘■]²■. Extend-A-Name
- Plus will display:
-
- MAKE sub-directory under [Current Level] as: «■
-
- Type in the name of the new subdirectory (up to 8 characters) and
- press ²■[┘■]²■. The new subdirectory will be created under the
- level currently highlighted in the Path Tree. Extend-A-Name Plus

- The ²■F²■ind command is avaialble in the File and File Utility
- Windows (it is not listed with the File Utilities). Find allows you
- to locate a specific file in the any Library in the current
- subdirectory.
-
- Extend-A-Name will pop-up a screen allowing you to search through
- all of your files' Extended Names, Owner and DOS filenames, giving
- you a list of all files that match your search request, no matter
- which Library they are assigned to. Use [TAB] to move across these
- fields.
-
- The cursor keys allow you to enter additional search parameters for
- each category. In addition you can further condition your search
- using ²■[F2]²■ to specify AND/OR/NOT for each entry.
-
- When you press ²■[┘■]²■, the prompt will change asking which
- Library should be scanned for the desired files:
-
- ■ only the ²■C²■urrent Library
- ■ ²■A²■ll Libraries in the current subdirectory
- ■ files in a ²■S²■elected Library. This option will pop-up the

-
- Extend-A-Name will display a list of files that match the search
- conditions. As you move through the list, the name of the Library
- that contains the highlighted file is displayed at the top of the
- screen. If the file you are searching for is unique, then the File
- Menu may display just that file.

- The FILE ²■U²■tilities commands:
- Archive - Copy file to a designated archive drive or subdirec-
- tory. A diskette drive can be designated as the
- archive drive for use as off-line storage.
- Copy - Copy file to another drive or subdirectory
- Delete - Erase the file from the system
- Move - Move file to another Library, drive or subdirectory
- Tag - Mark multiple files allowing groups of files to be
- copied, moved, archived or deleted
- Untag - Remove file Tag
- Xdelete - Removes the file from the list of Extended Names but
- does not delete the file from the disk
- Rename - Give the file a new Extended Name or DOS filename
- View - Look at the document contents without retrieving it
- into the work space. Extend-A-Name Plus currently
- supports View for WordPerfect 4.2/5.0 and ASCII text
- files. All other files can be viewed as Raw-data
- without any formatting.
- Find - While the Find Command is not listed with the File
- Utilities, it is available by pressing ²■[F]²■.
- Find allows you to locate a specific file in any
- Library in the current subdirectory.
- >2004
- The Rename command allows you to change a file's Extended Name,
- Owner's Initials and DOS filename. Since Extend-A-Name Plus is
- designed to be a file naming utility, the Rename command is
- available in the File, File Utilities, and View Windows. This
- makes it easier to utilize 60 character descriptive filenames.
-
- WARNING: Do not attempt to rename the DOS filename of a file that
- is currently being used by your application program!
-
- If you make a mistake, or change your mind about the new Extended
- Name, press ²■[F2]²■ to restore the original name.
-
- If you would like to base the new filename on another file in the
- current Library, press ²■[F3]²■. Use ²■[■]²■ or ²■[■]²■
- to select another file, and press ²■[┘■]²■. A copy of the
- selected file's Extended Name will be placed in the Rename Window.
- >2005
- The ²■L²■ibraries command returns you to the Library Window list-
- ing all Libraries for the current subdirectory. This command is
- included because selecting ²■E²■xit or pressing ²■[ESC]²■ will
- return you to your application work space, rather than allowing you
- to return to the Libraries Window.
- >2006
- Extend-A-Name Plus allows you to ²■V²■iew any file before retriev-
- ing it into your application. When ²■Vi²■ewing a file you can use
- the cursor keys to scroll through the file's contents.
-
- In the current version of Extend-A-Name Plus you can ²■V²■iew Word
- Perfect 4.2 and 5.0 documents as well as ASCII text files. Any
- other file formats can be displayed as Raw Text-Normal (what you
- would see if you issued the DOS Type command) or in Hexadecimal
- form.
-
- Extend-A-Name Plus can automatically detect WordPerfect 5.0 files.
- When you View a file and it is in WP5.0 format, the text will be
- displayed. If the file is in anything but WP5.0 format you will be
- asked which format you wish to use:
-
- ■ WordPerfect 4.2
- ■ Textfile
- ■ Hex-display
-
- WARNING: If you try to View NON-WordPerfect 4.2 files with the View
- WP4.2 option, you may lock you PC and have to re-boot.
- >2007
- If you don't know what to name a file and cannot look at it with
- the Extend-A-Name Plus View command, an alternative is to retrieve
- the file into your application and issue the Rename command by
- pressing ²■[CTRL]+[/]²■.
-
- Manual pop-up of Rename only works immediately after the file has
- been retrieved. If Extend-A-Name Plus pops-up again, without
- retrieving a new file, pressing ²■[CTRL]+[/]²■ will return the
- message - There is no active file to Rename!
- >2101
- Archiving is the process of storing files for historical purposes.
- Extend-A-Name Plus allows users to ²■A²■rchive files to another
- drive or subdirectory for storage purposes. A diskette drive can
- be designated as the archive drive for use as off-line storage.
-
- There are 2 types of Archive:
- 1) Archiving makes a copy of the file in the archive area.
- 2) Archive with Delete makes a copy of the file in the archive
- area and then deletes the original from the current subdirec-
- tory.
-
- The Archive storage area (either another drive:\directory or disk-
- ette) for each application is specified in the MAINCNF and USERCNF
- programs. You can specify a different Archive area for each appli-
- cation, or use one area for all your work. If the DOS filename
- already exists in the archive area (as it would if you are saving
- successive versions of the same file) the Auto-Name feature will
- automatically assign the file a new DOS filename.
-
- In addition to making an archive copy of the file, Extend-A-Name
- Plus also creates a delimited ASCII text file, XN_ARCH.TXT. See
- the Archive section of the FILE UTILITIES chapter for more informa-
- tion.
- >2102
- When a file is copied to another drive or subdirectory Extend-A-
- Name Plus also copies the Extended Name and the Library name where
- the file was originally assigned to the destination drive.
-
- Several files can be copied at the same time by ²■T²■agging them
- before you select ²■C²■opy.
-
- If the filename exists on the destination Extend-A-Name Plus will
- ask whether you want to Overwrite the original or give the copy a
- new name. Specifying new name will assign the duplicate the next
- available Auto-Name.
- >2103
- The ²■D²■elete command erases the file from the storage area and
- removes the file's Extended Name from the Library listing where it
- was assigned.
-
- Several files can be deleted at the same time by ²■T²■agging them
- before you select ²■D²■elete. Extend-A-Name Plus will ask if you
- want to Verify Delete before each Deletion? If you answer Yes,
- information about the file will be displayed including the Extended
- Name, DOS Filename, Owner, date and time last Updated and the file
- size in bytes.
-
- If Extend-A-Name Plus has been configured with the Archive on Delete
- option you will be asked if you want to Archive before Deletion?
- If you answer Yes, Extend-A-Name Plus will automatically make a copy
- of the file in the specified archive area prior to deleting the file
- from the current subdirectory.
- >2104
- Move is different from copy. Moving a file deletes it from where
- it was originally stored and creates a new copy on the destination.
- A file can be moved to another Extend-A-Name Plus Library or to a
- different drive or subdirectory.
-
- When a file is moved to another drive or subdirectory Extend-A-Name
- Plus moves the Extended Name and copies the Library name where the
- file was originally stored to the destination drive.
-
- If you move the file to another Library in the same subdirectory
- Extend-A-Name Plus will detect the duplicate DOS filenames and will
- ask whether you want to Overwrite the original or give the copy a
- new name. Specifying new name will assign the copy the next
- available Auto-Name.
- >2105
- The Extend-A-Name Plus Auto-setup feature automatically includes
- existing files in the UNASSIGNED FILES Library. There is a table
- of Filenames to Ignore that prevents program, system and temporary
- files from being setup.
-
- You can include files that are normally ignored by running the Setup
- command. This allows you to manually include files.
-
- ²■X²■delete removes files that have been manually Setup from the
- file listing, but does not delete the file from the disk. Files
- that have been Xdeleted can be returned to Extend-A-Name Plus by
- running the Setup command.
-
- If your application creates temporary files, or has system or pro-
- gram files that you do not want included in the listing of Extended
- Names, you must first add these files to the table of Filenames to
- Ignore using MAINCNF. If you Xdelete these files before including
- them in the table, the next time Extend-A-Name Plus pops-up, they
- will automatically be placed back in the file list.
-
- Several files can be Xdeleted at the same time by ²■T²■agging them
- before you select ²■X²■delete. Extend-A-Name Plus will ask if you
- want to Verify REMOVE of all Tagged Files. If you answer "No", the
- files will automatically be removed from the listing of Extended
- Names.
- >2201
- When using the ²■V²■iew command Extend-A-Name Plus can detect when
- a file is in WordPerfect 5.0 format and will automatically display
- the file contents. However, if the file is WordPerfect 4.2 format,
- Extend-A-Name Plus must be told this to ensure that the file con-
- tents are displayed in the proper format.
-
- WARNING: If you try to View NON-WordPerfect 4.2 files with the View
- WP4.2 option, you may lock you PC and have to re-boot.
- >2202
- When using the ²■V²■iew command Extend-A-Name Plus can detect when
- a file is in WordPerfect 5.0 format and will automatically display
- the file contents. ASCII text files can also be ²■V²■iewed,
- however, Extend-A-Name Plus must be told this to ensure that the
- file contents are displayed in the proper format.
- >2203
- You can ²■V²■iew files in WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.0 formats as well
- as ASCII text files. If your file is not in either of these formats
- you can display the file contents as hexadecimal values (Display-
- hexadecimal), or as if you issued a DOS Type command (Display-
- normal).
-
- When Viewing files in Hex-display, the hexadecimal codes for the
- characters are displayed in the center of the screen, with the
- characters the codes represent along the right side.
-
- When in Hex-display, the command line will change to allow you to
- return to "Normal-display".
- >2211
- You can ²■V²■iew files in WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.0 formats as well

- Help is available in all of the screens and windows in Extend-A-
- Name Plus. If you are in an Extend-A-Name Plus window, and are
- unsure of any of the selections on the command line, the Help
- feature will display an explanation of the selection. When you
- press the ²■ [F1]²■ key, the HELP INDEX Window will pop-up in the
- center of the screen.
-
- The HELP INDEX is an alphabetical listing of all the available Help
- screens in Extend-A-Name Plus. To view the remainder of the list,
- use ²■[■]²■ or ²■[■]²■ to move a line at a time, or the ²■
- [PgUp]²■ and ²■[PgDn]²■ keys to move a screen at a time.
-
- Highlight the desired feature and press ²■[┘■]²■.
-
- Once you have finished with Help, press ²■[┘■]²■ to return to
- the HELP INDEX, or press ²■[Esc]²■ to return to the original
- Extend-A-Name Plus window.
- >3200
- The ²■[F3]²■ key allows you to switch back and forth between the
- main Extend-A-Name Plus window where you would select a file to be
- retrieved and the Create/Save Window where you would name the new
- file.
-
- Depending on which window appears when Extend-A-Name Plus pops-up,
- either ²■[F3]²■ = Create/Save, or ²■[F3]²■ = Files will be
- displayed in the bottom row of the window.
-
- The ²■[F3]²■ - Create/Save feature is displayed in 4 places:
- 1) When the Libraries Window is displayed by a Dual Trigger.
- 2) When the Create/Save Window is displayed by a Dual Trigger.
- 3) When the a manual pop-up is performed using ²■[ALT]+[/]²■.
- 4) When the a manual pop-up is performed by pressing the Hotkey
- 3 times (///).
-
- If your application allows you to either Retrieve an existing file
- or Create a new file at the same prompt (for example Wordstar) the
- application will not let you access the work space (file) without
- naming it. The Extend-A-Name Plus Create/Save feature enables you
- to save a file with an Extended Name BEFORE entering any data.
- >3300
- Whenever you select a disk drive using the Path, Copy, Move, or
- Archive Commands Extend-A-Name Plus builds a table containing the
- Path Tree for the specified drive. As the table is being built,
- each subdirectory is displayed very quickly on the screen. Once
- the table is built, the complete Path Tree is displayed.
-
- If you change the directory structure by adding or deleting subdir-
- ectories outside of Extend-A-Name Plus, these changes will not be
- reflected in the Extend-A-Name Plus table. When you go back into
- Extend-A-Name Plus and execute the Path command for that drive, the
- old table will be redisplayed. Therefore, you should use the ²■
- [F3]²■ - Rebuild command to update the table and reflect any
- changes that have been made.
-
- If the Path Tree for the current subdirectory is not up to date,
- or, if you have popped-up in a drive which you share with other
- users, pressing ²■[F3]²■ while displaying the Path Tree instructs
- Extend-A-Name Plus to rebuild the path table and display the new
- Path Tree.
- >3400
- Once you have opened a Library, you can organize its contents with
- the ²■[F4]²■-SORT key. You can Sort the contents of a Library by
- Extended Name, DOS filename and extension, Date/time last updated,
- Owner, or by size.
-
- You can Sort files on 2 levels allowing you to organize files within
- groups. Both levels have a DIRECTION field, allowing the Sort order
- to be different for the primary and secondary Sort. Once you have
- performed a Sort, those Sort parameters become the default for all
- Libraries and directories until you change them by performing
- another Sort.
-
- On both Sort levels, the XNAME selection pertains to the left hand
- column (Extended Names), and the remaining selections (with the
- exception of size) refer to the parameter displayed in the right
- hand column. If you choose (DOS) Filename, Owner, Date, or Exten-
- sion, the right hand column will change to display that parameter
- after you have performed the Sort (file size is not a display option
- in the right column).
- >3500
- ²■[F5]²■-SHOW allows you to change the information displayed in
- the right column of the Files Window. The left column always dis-
- plays the Extended Name.
-
- The DOS Filename, Date/time last updated, or Owner's Initials can
- be displayed in the right column. If you change what is displayed
- in the right hand column, this becomes the default for all Libraries
- and subdirectories.
- >3600
- ²■[F7]²■-Configuration allows you to change the Auto-name
- parameters (Prefix, Suffix, On/Off) and view the configuration
- Settings for the active program.
- >3610
- Each time you save a new file, Extend-A-Name Plus creates the DOS
- filename consisting of your user initials and a sequential four
- digit number. Using ²■ [■]²■ you can move up to the DOS file-
- name and either type in another name, OR press ²■[F2]²■-Auto-name
- to assign the next available Auto-name.
-
- When you select Auto-name using ²■[F7]²■-Configuration you can:
- 1) Change the user initials (Prefix)
- 2) Change next sequential number (Suffix)
- 3) Turn Auto-name On/off
-
- The ²■Name Prefix²■ is originally entered during the Extend-A-
- Name Plus installation procedure as the user's initials or changed
- with USERCNF. This value is also used as the default for the Owner
- Inits (initials).
-
- The ²■Name Suffix²■ is the next sequential file number. For exam-
- ple, when Extend-A-Name Plus was installed, the first file created
- would have the DOS filename USR0001 where 0001 is the first
- sequential filename. Once the new file is created, Extend-A-Name
- Plus changes the Suffix default to 0002, the next number to be used.
-
- You can enable or disable the Auto-name feature using the ²■On/off
- ²■command:
- - When Auto-name is On, and the Create/Save Window pops-up, the
- DOS filename will contain the next Auto-name and the cursor
- will be ready for the user to input the Extended Name.
- - When Auto-name is Off, and the Create/Save Window pops-up, the
- cursor will be ready for the user to input the DOS filename,
- pressing ²■[┘■]²■ moves the cursor to the Extended Name.
- >3611
- The Auto-Name Prefix allows you to change the user initials that
- were originally entered during the Extend-A-Name Plus installation
- and can also be changed with USERCNF. This value is used as the
- default for the Owner Inits (initials).
-
- The Auto-name Prefix is accessed by selecting the ²■A²■uto-name
- option from the ²■[F7]²■ - Configuration Window. To change the
- Name Prefix press ²■[P]²■, OR highlight ²■P²■refix and press
- ²■[┘■]²■. The following prompt will appear:
-
- Auto-Name Prefix: «
- Change Auto-name Prefix
-
- Type in your initials or any alpha-numeric characters you wish to
- use to identify your files.
- >3612
- The Auto-Name Suffix is the next sequential file number to be used
- by the Auto-name feature. For example, when Extend-A-Name Plus was
- installed, the first file created would have the DOS filename
- USR0001 where 0001 is the first sequential filename. Once the new
- file is created, Extend-A-Name Plus changes the Suffix default to
- 0002, the next number to be used.
-
- The Auto-name Suffix is accessed by selecting the ²■A²■uto-name
- option from the ²■[F7]²■ - Configuration Window. To change the
- Suffix press ²■[S]²■, OR highlight ²■S²■uffix and press
- ²■[┘■]²■. The following prompt will appear:
-
- Auto-Name Suffix: «
- Change Auto-name Suffix
-
- Type in the number you want Extend-A-Name Plus to use for the next
- file to be created using the Auto-Name feature. If Extend-A-Name
- Plus finds a file with that number, it will automatically sequence
- through until it finds the next available number.
- >3613
- You can turn Auto-name On/off by selecting the ²■A²■uto-name
- option from the ²■[F7]²■ - Configuration Window.
-
- When Auto-name is On, and the Create/Save Window pops-up, the DOS
- filename will contain the next Auto-name and the cursor will be
- ready for the user to input the Extended Name.
-
- When Auto-name is Off, and the Create/Save Window pops-up, the cur-
- sor will be ready for the user to input the DOS filename. When you
- press ²■[┘■]²■ the cursor will move down to the Extendend Name.
- >3700
- If the characters on your screen are unreadable when Extend-A-Name
- Plus pops-up, use ²■[F8]²■-COLORS to change the screen attributes.

- The View Settings option under ²■[F7]²■-Configuration allows you
- to see the configuration parameters for the active program. Most
- of these settings can be set using MAINCNF or USERCNF. These
- include:
-
- User Number - The number from the Extend-A-Name Plus diskette
- that is included in SET XNP= to identify the
- user
- Directory - The drive:\subdirectory where the XNPLUS program
- files are stored
- Max Librs/Path - Maximum number of Libraries per subdirectory.
- The number can range from 10-64
- Max Files/Path - Maximum number of Files per subdirectory. The
- number can range from 100-999.
- Record Buffers - Controls how fast Extend-A-Name Plus will pop-
- up. This number is set automatically to
- maximize memory utilization.
- Program - The program for which Triggers are active
- Archive Files - The path to be used when archiving files. If
- no archive path is specified the path will be
- set MANUALLY when the archive command is issued.
- Maintain DB - The location where XN_ARCH.TXT is written when
- files are archived to records information about
- each record.
- Archive/Delete - Specifies whether the Archive on Delete option
- is enabled.
-
- For information on changing these settings see the CONFIGURATION
- chapter.

- Whenever an Extend-A-Name Plus window is displayed you can see the
- underlying screen by pressing the ²■[F9]²■ key. Press any key to
- return to the Extend-A-Name Plus window.
- >4100
- Extend-A-Name Plus allows you to assign your files 60 character des-
- criptive names. Any character can be used in the Extended Name.
-
- The Extended Names can be organized into Libraries within each
- subdirectory. A Library is like a file folder where similar files
- are stored. For example, you might have a Library for Memos,
- another for Letters and a third for Schedules.
-
- You can use the ²■F²■ind command to locate files. For example,
- you could locate all files pertaining to the budget or addressed to
- Mr. Smith as long as "budget" or "Smith" were in the Extended Names.
- >4200
- Personal computers compatible with the IBM PC standard use the Disk
- Operating System (DOS) as the interface between the computer hard-
- ware and the application software.
-
- DOS files have names divided into 2 parts. The FILENAME consists
- of 8 characters and a file EXTENSION of 3 characters. The FILENAME
- and EXTENSION are separated by a period. For example, a memo file
- addressed to Mr. Smith might be called SMITH.MEM.
-
- This 11 character filename does not give much information about what
- the file actually contains. Hence the need for Extend-A-Name Plus,
- which gives you a 60 character descriptive filename.
-
- Underlying the Extend-A-Name Plus 60 character name is a DOS file-
- name. The Auto-name feature utilizes the user's initials plus a
- sequential number, to create a DOS filename.
-
- If your initials are USR, the first file you create with Extend-A-
- Name Plus would have a DOS filename of USR0001. For programs such
- as LOTUS 1-2-3 (.WK1 or .WKS) and MultiMate (.DOC) that use file
- extensions, Extend-A-Name Plus will automatically assign the ex-
- tension as part of the Auto-name.
-
- If you are Resaving an existing file you can change the DOS filename
- to create a new version of the file, leaving the original intact.
- Use ²■[■]²■ to move to the DOS filename field. To assign the
- next Auto-Name, or type in a DOS filename, press ²■[F2]²■.
- >4300
- The Save to Path command appears in the top line of the Create/Save
- Window. This defines the drive:\subdirectory where the file will
- be stored.
-
- To change the drive or subdirectory use the cursor keys to move to
- the Save to Path line. If you have less than 15 drives, a listing
- of available drives will appear. Make a selection from the list,
- or enter the desired drive. The Path Tree for the selected drive
- will appear. Use the cursor keys to highlight the desired subdirec-
- tory and press ²■[┘■]²■. The file will be saved to the specif-
- ied drive:\subdirectory.
- >4400
- When a file is created with the Extend-A-Name Plus Auto-name feature
- the Owner's Initials field is automatically assigned the user's
- initials. In the Create/Save Window these initials are displayed
- along with the Save to Path, DOS filename and the Extended Name.
- The Owner's Initials are supplied during installation, with USERCNF,
- or using the Auto-name option in ²■[F7]²■-Configuration.
-
- Using the ²■F²■ind command it is possible to get a listing of all
- files belonging to a specific Owner. You can group files by Owner
- using ²■[F4]²■-SORT.
-
- During File Save, Resave and Rename you can change the file's Owner
- by using the ²■[■]²■ cursor key to move to Owner's Inits and
- entering up to 4 characters.
