- === CHAPTER 1 ==================================================================
- ================================================================================
-
- Part 1:
- STARTING and SETTING UP BOBCAT.
-
- IMPORTANT ! One point I would like to make clear up front is the current -
- craze of Executable File Compression, that is the Compression of files with
- the extension of COM or EXE. Do to BOBCATS need to repeatedly access itself
- (that is the self opening and reading of BOBCAT) it can not be compressed by
- using any of the popular Executable Compression programs such as DIET, PKLITE
- TINYPROG, plus many others. Now with that Warning aside lets setup BOBCAT...
-
- First, you as the user, must decide where you want BOBCAT to reside.
- This can be any directory you like, as long as you limit the directory depth
- to one deep, or as long as you keep the full Pathname at no more than 11 -
- characters in length.
-
- Ex: C:\UTILITYS <- 11 characters
-
- Once you have determined where BOBCAT will reside you must copy the
- BOBCAT program to your chosen directory then move to that directory for the
- initial setup operations. Now, at the DOS prompt type the program name then
- press the enter key.
-
- After the main screen appears you will see that BOBCAT is displayed
- in the File View Window at the left of the screen, on the right side of the
- screen is the main Option Window Menu. Press the number key #8 SetUp Options.
- You will now see a new option window appear at the right of the screen. This
- is the BOBCAT Setup Option Window, press function key F1 Chg/BobCat Config -
- At the request box at the center of the screen you are asked to either press
- [A] Change BOBCAT Path or [B] Change BOBCAT Colors. Press the [A] option so
- we can tell BOBCAT where it can locate a copy of itself after launching a -
- program or a typed in command. Type in the full Pathname where BOBCAT resides
- then press the enter key...
-
- You are then asked if you wish to save this new Pathname to the -
- BOBCAT#.FIG file - press the Y key for Yes.
-
- Here is a summary of the steps to setting up BOBCAT's Path Location.
-
- NOTE: If at anytime you are not sure of what to do, or wish to cancel the
- option you activate, simply press the [Esc] key. Also, whenever you
- are requesteded for a Yes or No response simply press the Y or N key.
-
- All following operations will be accomplished in Steps, each step -
- will be indicated with either an Example or you will see displayed
- on the BOBCAT screen a Request Prompt. At any Request Prompt, simply
- press the proper requested key or type in the correct response...
-
- The word [ENTER] enclosed in brackets refers to pressing -
- the Enter or Return Key....
-
- Step 1: Create a Sub-Directory for the BOBCAT Program File.
- Ex: MD C:\BBCAT [ENTER]
-
- Step 2: Copy the BOBCAT Program into the Directory.

-
- Step 5: At the Request Press Y for Yes to save change to BOBCAT#.FIG.
-
-
- Part 7:
- CHANGING USER ASSIGNMENTS.
-
- Here is where you can add more Power to BOBCAT by assigning up to 20
- commands strings or program names that are activated by a function key press
- that you assign to each command string or program name of your choosing...
-
- You then enable selection of each command or program option by enter-
- ing up to a 16 character discription of your command string or program name.
- After the activation of any of your commands or programs, you automatically
- return to the BOBCAT program.
-
- For example, lets say you are currently displaying a list of record-
- files that contain names, addresses and phone numbers, and you normally use
- a utility like DOS's FIND.EXE program to locate the file a particular vendors
- name resides. Now lets assume that the FIND.EXE program is kept in a directory
- named> C:\UTILITY, and you are in drive A: looking at the directory list of
- vendor filenames. (Ex: VENDOR#1.TXT - VENDOR#2.TXT - VENDOR#3.TXT - etc, etc.)
-
- You would at the DOS Prompt Type:
-
- C:\UTILITY\FIND "Johnson" VENDOR#1.TXT [ENTER]
-
- If not in that file you would then again type:
-
- C:\UTILITY\FIND "Johnson" VENDOR#2.TXT [ENTER]
-
- If not in that file you would then again type:
-
- C:\UTILITY\FIND "Johnson" VENDOR#2.TXT [ENTER]
-
- - until you have located the file in question...
-
- BOBCAT will enable you to assign this command string to a function
- key, you can then highlight each filename using the File View Highlighting -
- Bar then press your command string assignment function key and the command
- string - C:\UTILITY\FIND "Johnson" plus the highlighted filename will be
- typed out at the DOS prompt and activated for you. If the "Johnson" string
- is not found you return to BOBCAT's main screen, highlight the next filename
- and again press your function key assignment, repeating this easy operation
- until the file is found that contains "Johnson"...
-
- Example #1.
- Here is how you would assign this Program Command.
-
- Step 1: Press [Esc] to return to the main option window.
-
- Step 2: Press the number #8 key to access the Setup Options.
-
- Step 3: Press F6 - Chg/User Menu #1.
-
- Step 4: Press the Function Key you wish to assign to your command.
-
- Step 5: Type in, at the Prompt, the Full Path, Filename and Parameters
- of your command then press the enter key.
- Ex: C:\UTILITY\FIND "Johnson" [ENTER]
-
- Step 6: Press the letter "Y" for Yes to add a highlighted filename after
- the program command string.
-
- Step 7: Press the letter "Y" for Yes to PAUSE before reloading BOBCAT.
- (This enables you to view the results of your search.)
-
- Step 8: Now type in up to a 16 character discription of your assignment -
- then press the enter key.
-
- Step 9: At the Request Press Y for Yes to save change to BOBCAT#.FIG.
-
-
- Ok, now lets say you wish to make a quick backup of the complete disk
- contents on drive B: and would like it all copied to the A: disk drive using
- DOS's - DISKCOPY.EXE program...
-
- Example #2.
- Here is how you could assign this operation to a function key:
-
- Step 1: Press [Esc] to return to the main option window.
-
- Step 2: Press the number #8 key to access the Setup Options.
-
- Step 3: Press F6 - Chg/User Menu #1.
-
- Step 4: Press the Function Key you wish to assign to your command.
-
- Step 5: Type in, at the Prompt, the Full Path, Filename and Parameters
- of your command then press the enter key.
- Ex: C:\UTILITY\DISKCOPY B: A: [ENTER]
- (Creates a complete duplicate copy of drive B: onto drive A:)
-
- Step 6: Press the letter "N" for NO to NOT ADD a Highlighted Filename -
- after the program command string.
-
- Step 7: Press the letter "N" for NO to NOT PAUSE before reloading BOBCAT.
-
- Step 8: Now type in up to a 16 character discription of your assignment -
- then press the enter key.
-
- Step 9: At the Request Press Y for Yes to save change to BOBCAT#.FIG.
-
-
- As you can see, this feature makes it very easy to make BOBCAT as
- powerful and useful as you would like it to be. Not only that but whenever
- you turn off your computer then again turn it back on, BOBCAT will reload -
- your saved command assignments, ready to be activated at the press of a key..
-
-
- ADDING MORE SPEED TO BOBCAT.
-
- If you'd like to add some REAL SPEED to your file and directory -
- management create a RAM DISK using DOS's VDISK.SYS utility or any Ram Disk
- program. The Ram Disk need only be large enough to Copy your BOBCAT programs
- too, plus an extra 100 bytes or so for working room, there must be enough
- free space remaining minus the size of the BOBCAT program and BOBCAT#.FIG -
- file so that BOBCAT can create the batch file that launchs your programs or
- commands.
-
- This is a simple matter for those who are more experienced in setting
- up a computer. For those who are not, here is a simplified method of creating
- a RAM DISK using DOS's VDISK.SYS utility.
-
- On the floppy or hard disk drive you boot your computer from, in the
- root directory, create a file with the name CONFIG.SYS.
-
- The following examples assumes that you Boot from floppy drive A:
-
- Example: -> A> COPY CON CONFIG.SYS [ENTER]
-
- Then type: -> DEVICE = A:VDISK.SYS (Now press F6 then [ENTER])
-
- Your RAM disk will be assigned the next logical drive letter.
-
- This tells DOS to install a 64 kilo-byte RAM disk with the default
- specifications. You will refer to this disk by a drive letter like other
- disk drives, but the drive letter you will use depends on what is now -
- currently installed on your computer system. Also create a AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file (using the same method as you used to create the CONFIG.SYS file) -
- with the the command lines -
-
- COPY A:BOBCAT.EXE D: <-Use the drive letter assigned to your RAM disk.
- COPY A:BOBCAT#.FIG D: If your not sure what it will be on your system,
- D:BOBCAT.EXE this drive assignment will be shown to you when
- DOS loads VDISK.SYS the next time you reboot.
- (Watch for it!)
-
- This will copy BOBCAT.EXE and BOBCAT#.FIG from drive A: to drive D:
- then load BOBCAT from drive D:, the next time you turn on your computer.
-
- Also keep in mind that when you use this method, after the program
- has loaded, you must change the BOBCAT Path Location to D: then copy the two
- files BOBCAT.EXE and BOBCAT#.FIG from drive D: back to drive A: to insure -
- proper automatic configuration the next computer Boot....
-
- This example Ram Disk is EXCELLENT for speeding up Floppy Based Systems
- as well as the Hard Drive User...
-
- Now restart (reboot) your computer and your ready for some FAST action...

-
- THIS PROGRAM IS SHAREWARE:
-
- The "ShareWare" concept is basically an experiment in marketing
- and distribution of software. This is an attempt to cut down on
- distribution and marketing expenses so that quality software can
- be made widely available at the lowest possible cost. This concept
- also makes it possible for users to try the software before they
- decide to keep and hopefully pay for it. This is very handy in a
- world full of competing packages.
-
- There is a certain amount of ambiguity about when you're still -
- evaluating a program and when you're really using and should be
- registering a program, but in practical reality it is up to you to
- decide, for most it is not dishonesty but merely procrastination.
-
- < Please keep in mind the fundamental good spirit of free distribution >
-
- RESTRICTIONS:
-
- Permission is given to freely copy and distribute this program so
- long as there is no charge, (except for a minimal diskett cost) and
- that it is not added as an incentive to market another software or
- hardware product. This program is NOT a PUBLIC DOMAIN program, but
- is being distributed under the - SHAREWARE - concept.
