║ WHAT IS FRIDAY? ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ FRIDAY is like your own Person Friday. It handles all your appoint- ║
║ ments for any year between 1900 and 2099, and will store and quickly ║
║ access an unlimited number of business or personal contacts, along ║
║ with special notes you can create for each contact. ║
║ ║
║ PLUS, the program takes up less than 75k of memory, and can be called ║
║ up from inside any other application by pressing "SHIFT-ALT-F"! ║
║ ║
║ All functions can be quickly and easily accessed using the cursor ║
║ keys, function keys, RETURN, TAB and ESCAPE. And you don't need to ║
║ load or save your files as FRIDAY handles all that for you automati- ║
║ cally. Just press the Hot-key combination and all the data will be ║
║ instantly displayed. ║
║ ║
║ And if you need help at any time, just press 'H'. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ EXTRA POP-UP KEYS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ From version 1.60 onwards you have three sets of keys that can be used ║
║ to pop FRIDAY up. This is to allow for different keyboard layouts and ║
║ to make it possible to pop the program up using just one hand. The key ║
║ combinations are: ║
║ ║
║ SHIFT-ALT-F SHIFT-ALT-Z CONTROL-ALT-SPACE ║

║ ON-LINE DOCUMENTATION ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ As long as you have a copy of the FRIDAY documentation file FRIDAY.DOC ║
║ in your FRIDAY subdirectory, versions 1.50 onwards will allow you to ║
║ read the file from inside the program. ║
║ ║
║ To do this, simply press 'H' from within any main screen to select the ║
║ command summary screen, then press 'H' one more time to enter the file ║
║ viewer. ║
║ ║
║ When using the viewer, you can scroll up and down using the UP, DOWN, ║
║ PAGE-UP and PAGE-DOWN keys. Pressing the HOME and END keys displays ║
║ the start and end of the file. To return to the screen you called the ║
║ HELP section from, just press ESCAPE. ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ INSTALLATION ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ If you have received FRIDAY in an archived form, with a file called ║
║ INSTALL.BAT in the ROOT directory, just log onto the floppy drive and ║
║ type: ║
║ ║
║ INSTALL n: ║
║ ║
║ where n is the name of your hard drive. A directory called FRIDAY is ║
║ then created on your hard disk, containing all the relevent files. ║
║ ║
║ If you have downloaded FRIDAY from a bulletin board, or have just been ║
║ given the files, all you need to do is create a directory called ║
║ FRIDAY on your hard disk, and copy all the files into it. (After de- ║
║ archiving, if necessary). ║
║ ║
║ To have FRIDAY permanently resident insert the command: ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY ║
║ ║
║ into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. ║
║ ║
║ Thereafter, when you switch on your PC, you will be told of any appoi- ║
║ ntments you may have that day, and can instantly view them by pressing ║
║ "SHIFT-ALT-F" or one of the other two hot-key combinations. ║
║ ║
║ Unregistered FRIDAY users can remove the Shareware and other details ║
║ that appear at startup, by registering. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ GRAPHICS OPTION ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ To allow FRIDAY to pop up from graphics modes, you may insert the opt- ║
║ ional command 'X' following the filename, like this: ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY X ║
║ ║
║ However, your graphics screen will not be returned when you 'pop-down' ║
║ from FRIDAY and you will be asked to select any redraw facility (in ║
║ the program you called FRIDAY from), to renew it. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ AUTODIALLING OPTIONS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ To use the Autodial option (with a Hayes compatible modem), you must ║
║ add the command line parameter 'C', followed by the COM port you are ║
║ using and the letter 'T' or 'P' for Tone or Pulse dial, like this: ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY C1T or... ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY C4P ║
║ ║
║ Only COM ports 1-4 are accepted and if neither 'T' or 'P' is specified ║
║ FRIDAY will default to Pulse dialling. If in doubt, select Pulse. ║
║ ║
║ If you wish, you can combine the graphics and autodial options in any ║
║ order, like this: ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY X C1T or... ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY C3P X ║
║ ║
║ Just separate each parameter with a space. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ AUTODIALLING BAUD RATE ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ By default FRIDAY will talk to your modem at 300 baud. If you wish to ║
║ change this rate (for example, if you have a faster modem), you should ║
║ use the command line parameter 'S', immediately followed by the baud ║
║ rate, like this: ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY C1T S2400 or... ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIRUN C2P X S1200 ║
║ ║
║ As mentioned above, you may mix any command line parameters, in any ║
║ order, but do not leave a space between the 'S' and the baud rate. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ AUTODIALLING AND "DIALLING OUT" ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ If you are using FRIDAY in an office environment, where you have to ║
║ dial a '9' to get an outside line, you will have to preface out-going ║
║ numbers in your contacts database with a '9'. ║
║ ║
║ In addition if it sometimes takes a little while before your extension ║
║ is given the out-going line, you may wish to place a couple of commas ║
║ after the first 9. Each comma tells your modem to wait 2 seconds, and ║
║ then continue. You will be able to determine by trial and error how ║
║ many (if any) commas you may need. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ AUTODIALLING TONE-DIAL SPEED ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ The speed at which tones are sent to your exchange during tone dial ║
║ is set to 70 by default. If you wish to speed this up or slow it down ║
║ you should use the command line option T, followed by a number between ║
║ 50 and 255. 50 is fast and 255 is very slow. The command is entered in ║
║ the same way as the others and can be combined with them like this: ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY C2P X S2400 T60 ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ AUTODIALLING WAIT FOR HANG-UP ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ If your modem only dials the first few characters of a number before ║
║ hanging up (probably because you have a fast modem and it responds to ║
║ FRIDAY very quickly), you can add the command 'W' to the command line. ║
║ This will make FRIDAY wait for a key press before hanging up the line, ║
║ ready for you to talk. The W can be put anywhere on the command line: ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY C2P W X S2400 T60 ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ AUTODIALLING DIAGNOSTICS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ If you are certain you have correctly configured FRIDAY for your modem ║
║ and it does not appear to work, you may enter an additional command ║
║ line parameter 'D', which will make FRIDAY display diagnostics during ║
║ autodialling. Just leave a space after the 'C2T' (or whatever), and ║
║ then put a 'D', like this. ║
║ ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIDAY C3P D or... ║
║ \FRIDAY\FRIRUN C1T S2400 D ║
║ ║
║ Then try dialling a number and, either print out the diagnostic report ║
║ using PRINT-SCREEN, or write down what you see in the report window, ║
║ and send it to us. We should then be able to configure FRIDAY to your ║
║ modem. ║
║ ║
║ Don't forget to tell us as much as you can about your PC and modem ║
║ that may help us to provide your upgrade. This service is free to ║
║ registered users. ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SELECTABLE INSTALLATION ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Starting from version 1.70, you can now install FRIDAY where you like, ║
║ in any directory or sub-directory on any disk, as long as there is ║
║ enough room. To do so simply make sure that you copy all the following ║
║ files to your preferred directory, from the previous one or where ever ║
║ you originally installed or unarchived FRIDAY to. ║
║ ║
║ FRIDAY.EXE ║
║ FRIDAY.DOC ║
║ FSCREENS.DAT ║
║ FRIRUN.EXE ║
║ FRISORT.EXE ║
║ FRICODES.DAT --> (The contents may vary from country to country) ║
║ ║
║ When called up, FRIDAY will now note the directory in which it was ║
║ installed and look for and write its data to there. ║
║ ║
║ This also applies to FRISORT, which will sort any FRIDAY databases it ║
║ finds in the directory FRISORT.EXE is stored in. ║
║ ║
║ This means you can reinstall FRIDAY anywhere else you like (such as in ║
║ your UTILS directory). But you must remember that all your contacts ║
║ and appointments will not be entered into the newly installed copy, ║
║ unless you copy ALL the files from your original FRIDAY sub-directory, ║
║ (or whatever you called it), into your new directory. ║
║ ║
║ You should also note that the entire path name may not be longer than ║
║ 64 characters long. Using longer paths will cause FRIDAY to truncate ║
║ the names and therefore be unable to find them. (In which case it will ║
║ return you to DOS with a relevant error message). ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ THE CALENDAR SCREEN ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ This is the first screen you will see when you run FRIDAY. It displays ║
║ a whole year with any days where you have appointments highlighted. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ CURSOR CONTROL ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Pressing PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN will take you back or forwards a year, ║
║ while SPACE returns you to the current year and places the cursor over ║
║ today's date. ║
║ ║
║ You can move the cursor with the cursor keys and press RETURN to view ║
║ or edit your appointments for a particular day. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ CHANGING COLOURS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ If the colours are not clear on your PC, you can press 'S' to change ║
║ the displayed attributes. (Normally you may only have to do this when ║
║ using less than 100% graphically compatible laptops). There are three ║
║ sets of colours available, ranging from Black and White only, through ║
║ screens with some colour, to full use of colour. One of these is sure ║
║ to suit your PC. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ OTHER OPTIONS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Pressing TAB will take you to the contacts screen where you can view, ║
║ search for or edit contact details. ║
║ ║
║ Press ESCAPE to return to the application you called FRIDAY from. ║
║ ║
║ Press 'H' at any time for help. ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ THE CONTACTS SCREEN ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ This is selected by pressing TAB while in either the Calendar or ║
║ Appointments screen. ║
║ ║
║ The first thing American users may want to do when they select this ║
║ screen will be to press 'F'. This toggles the display between USA and ║
║ UK formats. Once you've selected the format you want, it will remain, ║
║ even through power-downs, until you press 'F' again. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ SEARCHING FOR A CONTACT ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ To search for contacts in the database, either move the large square ║
║ cursor over the top-left hand box and press RETURN, or press F1. Then ║
║ type in a few letters that you know are in one of the fields of your ║
║ target contact (you can use upper or lower case) and press RETURN. ║
║ ║
║ If a match is found, the contact's details will be displayed (usually ║
║ in less than 1.5 seconds). If there is no match the computer will beep ║
║ once. To see if there are any further matches use the PAGE UP and PAGE ║
║ DOWN keys to search backwards and forwards through the database. ║
║ ║
║ If you can't remember anything at all about a particular contact, ║
║ press F1, followed by ESCAPE or RETURN. You can then view ALL the ║
║ records in the database using PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ DELETING AND INSERTING RECORDS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ To delete a record just press BACKSPACE° and then type 'Y' or 'N' to ║
║ confirm deletion. (°The DELETE key marked '<--'). ║
║ ║
║ You can insert records by moving the large cursor to the top-right ║
║ hand box and pressing RETURN, or by pressing F2. Then type in the ║
║ details and press ESCAPE when you have finished. ║
║ ║
║ When entering details you can use both DELETE keys, the Cursor keys, ║
║ the HOME and END keys, and PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ EDITING A RECORD ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ To edit a record select the bottom-left hand box or press F3. Then ║
║ edit the details, the same as if you were entering new details, and ║
║ press ESCAPE when you have finished. ║
║ ║
║ You can also attach notes to each contact's details. To do this select ║
║ the bottom-right hand box or press F4. Entering and editing notes is ║
║ done the same way as editing the contact details. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ POST (ZIP) CODES ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ From version 1.20 onwards, post code (zip code) entries are automatic- ║
║ ally converted to upper case as you type them. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ PRINTING CONTACT DETAILS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Starting from version 1.70 you can print out your contact's details ║
║ a page at a time. To do so, make sure your printer is on-line and then ║
║ press 'P'. The details will automatically be printed, and the paper ║
║ advanced to the start of the next page. No special characters or fonts ║
║ are used so it will work with all printers. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ OTHER OPTIONS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Press ESCAPE or TAB to return to the screen you came from. ║
║ ║
║ Press 'H' at any time for help. ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ AUTODIALLING ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ From version 1.40 onwards you can use FRIDAY to automatically dial ║
║ phone numbers, if you have a Hayes compatible modem. To do this, you ║
║ must first set up FRIDAY in the manner described earlier, in the ║
║ section called AUTODIALLING OPTIONS. ║
║ ║
║ Then, to dial a number, select the contact you wish to call from the ║
║ Contacts screen, pick up the hand set and press SPACE. The number will ║
║ then be dialled and the modem will immediately switch off, leaving the ║
║ phone line as if you had dialled the number yourself. ║
║ ║
║ PLEASE NOTE: If you are using pulse dialling, you should NOT pick up ║
║ your hand set before dialling. Instead press SPACE to dial, wait until ║
║ you see "OK: PRESS A KEY..", then pick up the hand set and press any ║
║ key. You will then be connected and hear a standard tone: ringing, ║
║ engaged, unobtainable etc., just as if you had dialled the number. ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ THE APPOINTMENTS SCREEN ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ This is selected by pressing RETURN while in the Calendar screen. The ║
║ date that is highlighted under the cursor, before pressing return, is ║
║ the one that will be selected for editing/viewing appointments. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ INSERTING AND EDITING APPOINTMENTS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ To insert or edit an appointment, use the Cursor keys to move the ║
║ cursor to the correct time and press RETURN. Press ESCAPE when you ║
║ have finished. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ DELETING AND 'UNDELETING' APPOINTMENTS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ You can delete an appointment by pressing <-DEL°, or "undelete" it by ║
║ pressing INS. This allows you to move an appointment to another time ║
║ (and/or day) by deleting it, selecting the new time (and/or day), and ║
║ pressing INS. You may multiply undelete a single entry. (°BACKSPACE). ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ You can also decide whether to make an appointment Weekly, Monthly, ║
║ Yearly or a one-off by pressing one of: 'W', 'M', 'Y' or SPACE. (SPACE ║
║ standing for one-off). ║
║ ║
║ If an appointment is made to recur, wherever possible it will be ║
║ highlighted on the main Calendar screen. However if, for example, you ║
║ make a monthly appointment on the 31st of a month, only those months ║
║ with 31 days in them will show this appointment highlighted. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ THE FIRST FOUR APPOINTMENT ENTRIES AND APPOINTMENT CLASHES ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Although the first four appointment entries actually represent the ║
║ times 00:00, 00:15, 00:30 and 00:45, seeing as they are unlikely to be ║
║ used, they now read "ONCE", "WEEK", "MONTH", "YEAR". The idea is that ║
║ you can use them for general notes about each day. ║
║ ║
║ They are split into these four categories to prevent any confusion ║
║ that could be caused when you might have all of a One-off, a Weekly, a ║
║ Monthly and a Yearly appointment, all occuring on the same day. If you ║
║ were to just enter the details for each of these on one line, only the ║
║ most recently entered details would be displayed. ║
║ ║
║ But if you keep them separate, as suggested here, you will avoid any ║
║ clashes. ║
║ ║
║ To further reduce the possibility of clashes it is also recommended ║
║ that you check all your Weekly, Monthly and Yearly appointments, to ║
║ ensure that the time slots given to each could not clash. ║
║ ║
║ Future versions will cater for multiple appointments on the same day ║
║ and at the same time, when a "search ahead" facility has been comp- ║
║ leted, which will check ahead for a month or so to establish poten- ║
║ tial clashes, and warn you about them. We'll keep registered users ║
║ posted. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ PRINTING OUT APPOINTMENTS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Starting from version 1.70 you can print a whole day's appointments, a ║
║ page at a time. To do this, make sure your printer is on-line and that ║
║ you are in the Appointments screen, then press 'P'. ║

║ From version 2.00, if you have an appointment set and it becomes due, ║
║ a window will pop up to remind you, nomatter what application you may ║

║ ║
║ Also, when you start FRIDAY each day (usually when you turn your PC on ║
║ in the morning), you will be reminded of any appointments you may have ║
║ created for that day, that have occured prior to running the program. ║
║ ║
║ This feature is there to remind you, just in case you may have missed ║
║ an appointment. ║
║ ║
║ You should remember, though, that the appointment alarms can only pop ║
║ up if you have run and installed FRIDAY. If you are using FRIRUN then ║
║ it cannot remind you as no part of it is resident all the time to keep ║
║ an eye on the time and your appointments. ║

║ SEARCHING FOR APPOINTMENTS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ From version 2.00, you may now search for appointments from inside any ║
║ of the main screens. To do this simply press 'E' and enter a search ║
║ string. So, if you are looking for all appointments you have scheduled ║
║ with Mr. Bloggs, you would just type: BLOGGS. ║
║ ║
║ FRIDAY will then list every appointment line with that name in it. If ║
║ you need to list ALL your appointments, just press [RETURN] instead of ║
║ entering a search string. ║
║ ║
║ Note that the appointments are displayed in the order in which you ║
║ entered them, not the order in which they are due to occur. If you do ║
║ not like it this way, let us know and we'll change future versions of ║
║ FRIDAY to display them in date order. ║
║ ║
║ If you have configured FRIDAY for use in the USA or CANADA then all ║
║ dates will be shown correctly. For example: August 24th 1992 will be ║
║ shown as 24:11:92 in the UK and Europe, and 11:24:92 in North America. ║
║ To swap between European and North American displays, press 'F' while ║
║ in the Contacts screen. ║

║ LONDON DIALLING CODES ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ From version 1.40 onwards you can now look up the correct dialling ║
║ codes for the new London exchanges. Just press 'L', while in the any ║
║ of the main screens. ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL DIALLING CODES ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Starting with version 1.60 you can now find national and international ║
║ dialling codes from a supplied database. ║
║ ║
║ Every major country in the world that accepts direct dialling by the ║
║ caller, has an entry in the database. These entries are entirely in ║
║ upper case, and the dialling codes are prefaced by a '+'. This means ║
║ that before dialling the required number, you should first dial the ║
║ international connect code from your country which, in the UK, is 010. ║
║ ║
║ To use the facility, type 'A' from inside any of the main screens, and ║
║ the text to search for. So to find out the dialling code for Gibraltar ║
║ you could type: GIB, GIBRAL, ALTER or GIBRALTER. In fact you can enter ║
║ any group of letters that are part of your target string. ║
║ ║
║ The program will then list all entries that match the search specifi- ║
║ cation. You can also type in dialling codes and the program will find ║
║ the places that have that code as part of their entry. ║
║ ║
║ To list all the entries in the database, type ' ' in response to the ║
║ search prompt, as all the records have at least one space. ║
║ ║
║ You can cancel a search at any time by pressing ESC. If there are too ║
║ many matches to fit on the screen, you can press SPACE to see more. ║
║ ║
║ And pressing ESC in the input field exits from the STD code finder. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ LONDON SUBERBS AND INTERNATIONAL CODES ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ All London suberbs are also listed in the database, along with their ║
║ relevant 071/081 and exchange codes. So you can find a suberb from a ║
║ code, or a code from a suberb. Each entry is prefaced by the word ║
║ 'LONDON' in capital letters. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ CUSTOMISING THE DIALLING CODE DATABASE ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ If you can load Ascii files into an editor and display spaces, then ║
║ will be able to edit FRICODES.DAT to include local dialling codes for ║
║ your own area or country. ║
║ ║
║ Each entry in the file consists of exactly 30 characters. If an entry ║
║ would be too long you must truncate it. Or, if an entry is too short, ║
║ you should pad it by adding spaces to the end. ║
║ ║
║ Remember that each entry should be separated by a Carriage Return and ║
║ a Line Feed, (characters 13 and 10). ║
║ ║
║ As long as you follow these rules, the file can be as long as you like ║
║ and FRIDAY will search through it in the usual way. Please let us know ║
║ if you do create any non-UK code books and you would like other FRIDAY ║
║ users to know about them, and we will pass your details on as part of ║
║ our next mail shot to registered users. ║

║ CALCULATOR ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ From version 1.40 onwards you can now call up a calculator from within ║
║ any of the main screens by pressing 'C'. ║
║ ║
║ The calculator offers full floating point capabilities and also allows ║
║ you to set and use variables. We have decided to use variables as they ║
║ are a lot easier to manipulate than "memories". ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ USING THE CALCULATOR ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ You use the calculator just like an ordinary pocket type. For example: ║
║ typing 34*56+2/23.4 displays the result 1904.0855. There are 5 lines ║
║ in the results window. Each time a result is displayed the window will ║
║ scroll up making room for the new number. This lets you see the last 5 ║
║ results. ║
║ ║
║ You can further modify the last result by typing a +, -, * or /, foll- ║
║ owed by another expression. like this: ║
║ ║
║ 24+5 ║
║ /3 ║
║ +99 ║
║ ║
║ and so on. You can also use ^ which means "raise to the power". So, ║
║ 2^2 is 2 squared (or 4), and 2^3 is 8 (2x2x2). ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ RECALLING INPUTS AND RESULTS ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ You can recall, or copy, previous inputs or results, as long as they ║
║ are still displayed in the results window. ║
║ ║
║ To do this, simply press the UP or DOWN cursor keys to scroll through ║
║ them. As you do so, each result or input will appear in the input box, ║
║ ready for you to edit in the usual way, or simply just press RETURN, ║
║ to re-enter a calculation. ║
║ ║
║ Press ESCAPE to clear an input. If no input is displayed then pressing ║
║ ESCAPE pops down the calculator. ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ CALCULATOR VARIABLES ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ The variables come in very handy for storing results and numbers. ║
║ ║
║ To set a variable you type an expression like this: A=24*3.14. ║
║ ║
║ This stores the result of the expression in A. To recall A's value at ║
║ any point you can type: A, on it's own, and the value is displayed, or ║
║ you can use A in part of another expression, like this: 99/2+A. ║
║ ║
║ Variables are made up of just one character, between A and Z, so you ║
║ can have up to 26 of them. ║
║ ║
║ A useful example of how to use variables, is to set the variable V to ║
║ 1.175. Then, if you need to do VAT calculations you can type something ║
║ like this: 100/V which returns 85.106383 which, in pounds, is the cost ║
║ of a £100 item before VAT. Also, 100*V could be used to add VAT to a ║
║ price. ║
║ ║
║ You can mix variables and numbers in any combination if you wish, like ║
║ this: A=B*C/23+(84-D)/2. ║
║ ║
║ Notice the ( and ) brackets. These let you define the order in which ║
║ an expression will be evaluated. In the above case if D equals 7, say, ║
║ then the result of the last part of the expression will be 38.5. But, ║
║ if you leave out the brackets you get 80.5, which is 84-(7/2). If you ║
║ are ever in doubt about results use brackets to be safe. ║

╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ FILE LOCATOR ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ Starting with version 1.50, users of FRIDAY now also have access to a ║
║ comprehensive text and file finding utility. If you have a number of ║
║ documents on your disk, spread around through various directories and ║
║ sub-directories, then you'll certainly find this facility very useful ║
║ for finding text in documents who's names and locations you have forg- ║
║ otten. ║
║ ║
║ With it you can specify up to 7 words or parts of text that you know ║
║ appear in one or more documents, then you can choose up to 7 types of ║
║ document to search, and you can specify a time period within which a ║
║ search must take place. Plus you can choose whether to make the search ║
║ case sensitive, and select between Wordstar or standard file formats. ║
║ ║
║ This utility will find text in all Wordstar, Protext and Ascii format ║
║ files, as well as 95% of other formats where the alphabetic text is ║
║ not coded or changed in any way°. ║
║ ║
║ (°All trademarks are acknowledged). ║
║ ║
╠════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╣
║ USING THE LOCATOR ║
╟────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────╢
║ To use it, press 'T' (for 'Text find') in any of the main screens, ║
║ then type in the text to find, and the filenames to search and press ║
║ 'B' (for 'Begin'). ║
║ ║
║ The filenames may consist of wildcards, or refer to specific files. So ║
║ a typical list could look like this: ║
║ ║
║ *.DOC *.TXT *.ASC MYFILE ACCOUNTS.1?? ║
║ ║
║ And the words you might be searching for could be: ║
║ ║
║ DAVID SMITH MEETING RESEARCH ║
║ ║
║ To look for documents relating to David Smith and meetings he has ║
║ attended concerning research. ║
║ ║
║ If any matches are found, the text will be displayed at the bottom of ║
║ the screen, along with the name of the file and directory in which it ║
║ was found, and with the matching words highlighted. ║
║ ║
║ At this point you can press SPACE to look for further matches, 'S' to ║
║ skip this file and go on to the next, or ESC to return to the start. ║
║ Pressing 'R' (for 'Restore') clears all the data, ready for entering ║
║ new details, while 'W' and 'C' can be used at any time to toggle ║
║ between Wordstar/Standard files and Case/Non case-sensitive, respect- ║
║ ively. ║
║ ║
║ 'D' allows you to specify dates between which to limit a search. The ║
║ dates used are those displayed by each file when you type DIR at the ║
║ DOS prompt. (That is, the dates the files were last edited). ║

║ ║
║ This lets you keep your appointments fully up to date and ensures that ║
║ FRIDAY keeps running as fast as possible. ║
║ ║
║ Please note that appointments that are Yearly, Monthly or Weekly will ║
║ not be removed as they are assumed to continue "for ever" until you ║
║ say otherwise. ║
║ ║
║ The ASCII files are saved using the name OLDAPPS.ASC and there will be ║
║ one in your FRIDAY directory (after running FRISORT), with others that ║
║ may be in sub-directories off FRIDAY, if you have created more than ║
║ one database. ║
║ ║
║ The data in these files is never deleted, as the files are only added ║
║ to. We have decided this to avoid inadvertent data loss, if you want ║
║ these files removed you should do it yourself using the DEL command. ║

║ screen running away with itself when you release the key. ║
║ ║
║ Instead, the function being repeated (such as scrolling through the ║
║ years or contact details) continues steadily, until the key is let go, ║
║ at which point control returns immediately to the user, with the key- ║
