Creating Working Diskettes For a Floppy Based Computer
File Express can be run from diskettes if you are a patient type of
person. We recommend that you run from a hard disk if at all
possible. To use File Express on a diskette system you must first
install it on a hard disk and then copy specific program files to
one or more diskettes. If you don't have a hard disk to do the
initial installation, you will have to find someone who does. You
cannot use the Master Program Diskette to run File Express.
There is room on the diskettes for DOS and COMMAND.COM if you want
to be able to boot from the File Express diskette. Only Disk 1
needs to have the DOS system files but all the disks should have
a copy of COMMAND.COM on them so that you can drop to DOS from
inside File Express. You can use the FORMAT command with
the /S option to make a bootable diskette. See your DOS manual if
you need more information on this procedure.
After File Express is installed on a hard disk you can copy the
needed files to a floppy disk as shown below. The examples assume
you have installed File Express in a subdirectory called \FE5 on
the C: drive and are copying to diskettes in the A: drive.
For a 3.5" 720K system:
Label a floppy as Disk 1 and put it into drive A: and type:
COPY C:\FE5\FE.EXE A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.PRO A: <Enter> (if you have one)
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSG A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSI A: <Enter>
Remove Disk 1 from drive A: and replace it with a diskette labeled
Disk 2 and type:
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.VM A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSG A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSI A: <Enter>
For a 5.25" 1.2M system:
Label a floppy as Disk 1 and put it into drive A: and type:
COPY C:\FE5\FE.EXE A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.PRO A: <Enter> (if you have one)
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.VM A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSG A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSI A: <Enter>
For a 3.5" 1.44M system:
Label a floppy as Disk 1 and put it into drive A: and type:
COPY C:\FE5\FE.EXE A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.PRO A: <Enter> (if you have one)
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.VM A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSG A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.MSI A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.HLP A: <Enter>
COPY C:\FE5\FE5.HLI A: <Enter>
Help will not be available for the 720K or the 1.2M system but
there is enough room to fit the help files onto a high-density 3.5"
diskette.
Running On a Floppy Based Computer
For a 720K system two disks are needed. To start File Express on
this type of system, place Disk 1, containing FE.EXE, into drive A:
and type:
FE <Enter>
When DOS prompts: Enter directory for FE5.VM, remove Disk 1 from
the drive and replace it with Disk 2 and type:
A: <Enter>
File Express starts running. This lets you use drive B: for data
files. You do not have to put Disk 1 back in drive A:. All the
required overlay files are on Disk 2.
To run File Express from either a 3.5" high-density drive or from
a 1.2 meg 5.25" drive, place Disk 1 in drive A and type:
FE <Enter>
File Express starts and you can use drive B: for your data.
