Would you please tell me how to configure a Supra V32bix Fax Modem under
NeXTStep 2.1. Do I need a special driver or should I use the standard
class 2 one ?. Thank's in advance

It is my understanding that the current driver for the NeXT was based on
a old spec for the class2. Our modem is based on a new cut of the
spec, and the two have problems. The class2 is still being worked on by
the CCITT committee and hasn't been finalized yet. There are several
companies working on new drivers which should support our modem.

I have a Microcom QX/2400t moden that is hung in the open mode after a

Take it apart (you can't void the warranty now <G>). It may have a
mechanical relay that is stuck.

Most likely the storm damaged either the relay or some of the more
important parts of the modem. If it is the relay, you can probably fix
it, may be a chore find the parts though.

I do not have a specific configuration for it yet, but we are working
with the people who make CrossTalk to correct this. We will be sending
them a modem in the future to enable them to set it up correctly.

Kenny, I've been reading the notes on-line, and am considering buying
the 14.4 bis fax/modem. Although I usually am using Compuserve, GEnie,
etc., I also access CheckFree, and their program apparently can be
somewhat fussy, even at the fall-back rate of 2400. They are on the
Compuserve network. Question is, have you had any comments about the
compatibility of your modem with CheckFree. For this one purpose, I
don't think speed is the question, but compatibility is urgent.
Thanks. Jeff Hacker

I have left several messages to you about an initialization string that
would work to log in to CI$ at 9600 baud. I have had trouble all
along. Some times I would get in fine, then next time, no go. After
several days, it finally hit me; maybe it's the node. I tried a couple
of other 9600 baud numbers in other parts of the state, and voila!
Everything worked great! Now I can use just the AT&F2 string for those
nodes and it works ok. I left a message to CI$ feedback about the
Fresno node, hope they will do something about it. Thanks for all your
help.

I purchased a Supra V.32bis modem to transfer large files to a
customer our company works with. I recommended the same modem to our
customer. We can each connect to any BBS at 14.4 but can not connect to
each other with any regularity. I can not call in to the other modem at
all and they can only connect to my modem if it is forced to 2400.
We were able to get through to your tech support line on 2
occasions. This was on Wed. the 8th. The person we spoke to had us
check the ROM level - both the latest version released - and had us
enter some different AT commands. It did not help. Your rep called
both of us and was able to connect at 14.4 to both. We were told the
problem was line noise between our locations. I am located in NJ at the
US headquarters of Mita Copystar America (the copier and FAX company)
and the other modem is located in CT at the headquarters of Pitney Bowes
FAX division. Both of us work in the engineering department and have
access to diagnostic equipment. We can test phone lines and the phone
lines look OK to us.
We tried today to connect again - no luck. We called Datastorm
since we both use Procomm Plus, they made sure we had the latest
MODEMS.DAT file and the correct modem commands but still no luck. The
Datastorm rep was able to log on to my system at 14.4 using a US
Robotics but not the CT location.
We tried to call your support and sales lines all day today - 50
calls at least and got either no answer or a busy signal, all day. We
need help resolving this problem ASAP. I look like an idiot for
recommending the modem since it won't work and we have wasted 2 days of
valuable time. Please have someone call me at 201-288-6900 Ext 284, or
Mike Mayes at 203-381-7476 tomorrow to help us resolve this. It would
probably be better if you called Mike, he can arrange a 3 way conference
call. PLEASE HELP!

Scott,
I have also been unable to connect to some Supras at anything over 2400
baud. I think the problem is the inability of the Supras to initiate the
fallback required for anything other than perfect lines. The local lines
round here (central Mass.) are very bad and I just can't connect to a
BBS just two towns away. However, over AT&T lines I can connect to non
supra modems in CA without any problem.
Perhaps the problem will be fixed when the modem is *finished*.

On a stock 500 with workbench 1.3, 9600 is about as good as you are
going to get. The computer just can't support anything higher reliably.
You can help the situation by killing anything you have in the
background and reduce the colors to only 2.

Seems like JRCOMM is the problem! What you need is a terminal program
that supports 19200 baud. This way, you should be able to make a
V.32bis (14,400) CONNECT. Personally, I use Access!, which *IS*
reliable at that speed.

I have trying to send a fax from a Relisys TEFAX fax machine to the
supra FAX Modem v.32bis and I have never had a successfull session.
If I send it lowres, the modem after answering and (I guess) handshaking
will disconnect. The Fax Manager Activity Log will report error -23003
(what is that?). If I send it Hires, the modem will continue receiving,
but then when I try to view the document, it's either empty or only a
quarter page of the last page showed up.
Is there any insights to this problem? Have you ever heard of this
problem before?

Hi Glenn. I've got the Supra v.32bis as well and I also use GEnie and
BIX. You shouldn't have to use a special setup string for a different
ONLINE SERVICE as I have found that their connections are more
consistent and reliable than many of the BBS systems I've attempted
dialing.
I use the basic AT&F2 for all systems that I dial, and only in rare
cases, such as with the AST Support BBS, do I have to add a command or
two to get things to work properly.
If you don't mind, let's lose Aladdin for a second to see if that's the
problem. Just use any standard comm package like PCPLUS, TELIX or
QMODEM.
Let's test this out. Try dialing 1-213-776-0500, which is my GEnie
access number here in Los Angeles, CA. I've never had a problem with
that number so this should tell us something. By the way, is the modem
connecting with CD, but the prompt not coming up? You may or may not
have to type the HHH when you first get a connect message. Also, I
believe that although GEnie doesn't advertise it, they actually have
14,400 access since my modem shows 14.4 on the display even though GEnie
only mentions 9600 baud ports. If it works, leave GE Mail for AMCGEE.

pick up the phone. But when another data modem calls, the ARA will
attempt to pick up.
Basically with ARA, the FAXstf is useless...

Re:"...The problem is when the ARA is set up to answer the phone, and

I assume that the modem won't arbitrate, e.g. when ARA and FAXstf both
request auto answer, the modem waits to identify the carrier and passes
it off to the appropriate software.
BUT-- at least you can dial out when ARA is set to auto-answer and after
you complete your comm session the ARA will "discover" the empty serial
port and wait for a call again. Kinda neat.

I can point to a number of people who have trouble with one TF host and
not the other - because of differences in the modem(s) and NOT in the
line quality. One of those is looking at moving up to a Supra v.32bis
in fact. Both are early vintage 9600's.
I had trouble with QuickDEX, but once I got the Supra working right, I
still I had to reinstall QD II from the master before it would work. I
had to force quit both TeleFinder and QDII at various points.
I finally ended up using a setup for TF that does not use HH and only
uses flow control. Don't know if that made any difference, but it seems
to. I get 900's in transfers and have bps set to 19.2. Hints? Tips?
Examples?
Thanks!

Will soon have a chance or two to access 14.4 hosts, but not now. I
think the software is an issue, but from listening to other (Mac) users
on CIS, 1000 cps is the best I have heard, but I DL during the day,
rarely in the evening, almost never at 4 am.
Transfer protocol I use is going to be B+ on CIS or Zmodem elsewise.
I will try using bare bones telecommunications program and try. So far,
nothing has gone over mid-900's. And having HH selected does not seem to
help - or even work in some situations.
Thanks!

Mr. Holbrook; I hope that this doesn't sound sarcastic, but since I'm a
very experienced user who did it you might check. Do you have AppleTalk
active on the system that you are trying to connect from. It drove me
crazy for two hours one night, but my symptoms were exactly the same.
It's something that Apple needs to consider too, since when you do this
you can't use the printer port on a local basis. I've got a Stylewriter
at home that's useless when I'm connected to the network at work. On
the positive side, the performance it wonderful when you're running V.42
at both ends. Check your chooser and make sure that you've got
AppleTalk active on the system you're calling from and best of luck.

Steve:
Thanks for the advice. I was hoping to hear from others using ARA
successfully with the Supra V.32bis modems, since I bought two of them
specificially to use ARA from home to work. When I first tried ARA
several months ago, it worked fine but my 2400 baud modems just didn't
have the horsepower. I did turn on AppleTalk. Here's a possible
problem: I am forced to connect my home modem to the printer port
because the modem port is broken. Apparently this is OK as ARA allows
you to choose the printer port (and it worked before with the 2400 baud
Zoom V.42bis'ers). I don't have a printer connected at home so the loss
of this port doesn't bother me. The problems I'm having are that it
seems to connect, the ARA status says "communicating at 14,400 baud",
but then the line is dropped immediately. I could try the ARA script
that "locks" the modems at 9600 but I really want to use the full speed
if possible. I thought when I bought them that they would negotiate down
but now I'm hearing that they won't "initiate" a step-down so if you
have Supra's on both ends neither one will ask for a step-down. Also,
the printer port gets locked "in use" and nothing will free it except a
PRAM zap followed by (sometimes) two reboots. Could you briefly describe
exactly how you have your computers configured, and I'll see if I'm
leaving anything out.
RE: "...the performance it wonderful when you're running V.42 at both
ends."
I thought ARA turned off all modem error correction and did its own.
Looking forward to any advice... Regards

Sorry, I haven't responded earlier. I am out of town on business and am
borrowing a machine for access at this time. I'll be out most of next
week but will check with you as soon as possible. I should have
clarified that I didn't have the problem with the Supra's but rather
with a pair of MultiTech 9600 v.32s that I had in place previously. All
I did when I got the V.42bis boxes was substitute them and add the ARA
scripts on both systems. I agree and understand your comment about the
error correction documented about ARA and didn't intend that the comment
was focused specifically on error correction, but rather the total
performance improvement that I've experienced. Off the top of my head,
I can't think of anything unusual on the systems that would make the
difference, but I'll sit down and look at everything when I get home and
drop you a note if I think of something.
Here's a shot in the dark just related to years past. Is your phone at
work off of a PBX system. I haven't experienced it for a few years, but
14,400 (sans v.32 or 42) used to cause fits on a lot of PBX systems.
Most newer, large scale phone systems don't have any problems, but if
you are, you might see if anyone can talk to the PBX vendor and see what
they think.
I'm sorry I can't think of anything else off the top, but keep in touch
and I'll give you a yell here when I get home.

One other thought and I can't check it from where I'm at. I'm sure

(although I did make that mistake more than once in the past), since

Supra: 14 4
ARA: Communicating at 14,400 baud.
Supra: 3
ARA: Unsuccessful connection, etc.
WRT the PBX, we got a new phone system about 4 years ago, it's

Jeff-
I've had the SupraFaxModem V.32bis for about a month now. I, too,
experienced a problem similar to yours. I wish I could remember what I did
to fix it but my setup is working very well now. I know it took a lot of
experimenting on my end to get a fairly stable system.
14,400 Bps and error correcting modems add a new level of sophistication to
telecommunications.Unfortunately, this new speed and power adds a new layer
of complexity to setting up the modem to work correctly on your system. I think
Kenny is trying to solve your problem. He has established that the modem you
sent back works on his machine. By the technicians principle of "divide and
conquer" his findings would indicate that the problem is probably
somewhere on your end. Due to a bug in the Rockwell chipset, all of the
modem vendors are having a very difficult time keeping their customers
happy. I know it has kept Supra's tech support streched to the limit, but
they are working on the problem and will have a fix for it shortly. In the
meantime, stay cool. Have you got any more ideas that will help Kenny to
diagnose your problem? I suspect we will get it working and you'll be
satisfied. I'm leaving in the morning for a week of R&R, but if you still
have a problem, you can know it can be done, 'cause my setup works

Have you checked you serial port to make sure it is working properly? Can

I keep having to reinstalling QD DA since installing the Supra modem.

I am using a SupraFaxModem V.32bis with Procomm Plus for Windows and
Winfax 2.0. The most serious problem that I am having with the faxmodem
is managing the device contention conflicts that occur when the two
applications try to gain access to the faxmodem at the same time. For
example, when Winfax is running in a window and it is set to answer
calls automatically, Procomm cannot open the communications port because
it is already in use. Or viceversa, when Procomm is in host mode I
cannot get Winfax to send or recieve anything because of device
contention. Consequently, I have been unable to integrate and make full
use of the modem's data communications capabilities and its fax
functions. Is there any solution to this other than having separate
lines for a fax and a data modem?

This is a problem with Windows, not the two specific programs.
Currently to the best of my knowledge there isn't a arbitrator program
for windows. You might want to ask this question in the WINADV forum
and see what one of the MS reps says.
I have figured a way around this problem and will discuss it with any
good windows programers out there, I'm still trying to get my feet wet
with windows programming.

Problem?!!! What Windows is doing is correct. If both packages were able
to access the port at the same time there would be a real problem. Say,
for example, that both WinFAX and the comms package are set to answer
the modem. The phone rings, both send the ATA command. This will not
work at all!
Sure it's a pain in the butt, but the only way round this is to have the
applications aware of each other. This could be done with 3.x, but the
method may not stand up too well under NT.
Anyway, the answer:- Two serial ports and two modems. Expensive, but
that is the work-around I use - it can also service two phone lines!

I don't think I explained myself very well. What I would like to see is
a way to have winfax allow a application to grab the port, use it, and
then give it back. This is one of few things that the mac does right.
Right now you have to close winfax to get it to give up the port.

Kenny,
I can assure you am aware of the inconvenience, for a few months I was
doing just that! However, without a better COMMS API (it sure needs some
work) or apps that use the DDE to request the use of an open port, this
limitation will be with us until NT.
The only realistic way round this I can see is to have a comms driver
that provides a couple of virtual comm ports that get mapped to one
physical port as and when required. This would have major limitations,
but it *COULD* work

Hi,
I am running a Mailbox with two SupraFAXModems V.32bis. Unfortunatly I
got problems with the configuration of these two Modems. The Software
I'm running my BBS with is WildCat! 3.0. I think the problem is, that
I had used a wrong initialisation file, because there was none included
in the Softwarepackage. Meanwhile I got the correct file from Mustang
Software Inc. but the first I used seems to have changed some important
settings. My question is now, how can I make a real full factory reset.
I know that there is the command AT&F2 but it does not restor all the
settings. I would be very happy if you could give me a hint, how to do
this. Because as the modems are installed now I can't get any error-
corrections anymore. Maybe there exists a file that can be sent to the
Modem and that makes a full factory reset.
Thanks everybody

Kenny,
I still have problems with my Supra V.32bis fax modem, ROM version
1.200-C. I am using Winfax on a 386-25 PC.
I have done the following things:
- tried the original winfax software
- tried the new mod.exe file from the (German) supra support bbs.
- tried the newer mod.exe file from the CI$ Delrina section on Windows
vendor B forum.
- tried the various init strings and system.ini settings recommended by
you
The effect is the same no matter what I try. If I ring another fax
modem, I do not get a reliable link. A link to a "classic" fax device
mostly works correct, but sometimes I need more than one try until the
data transfer takes place. If the link fails, not even one line is
printed, and the fax device reports an error.
If I ring a fax modem, the reaction depends on the other modem's brand:
- ZyXEL 1496E: the modems do their handshaking (winfax reports the
caller ID). Then the baudrate display on my modem changes from 96 to
72, then to 48 and 24, and finally CLICK (hang up).
- Twincom 24/96: The modems do their handshaking, winfax reports the
caller ID, and then CLICK. No baud rate is displayed on the front panel.
- Supra V.32bis (ROM version 1.000): Everything works great (hurra!).
- Yoriko 2496 (Rockwell chipset): Same reaction as Twincom 24/96.
In addition to these fax problems the damn modem now starts to cause
more
and more troubles with normal modem-to-modem (V.32bis) connects.
Yesterday I had a CONNECT 14400 at 2400 bps (to a ZyXEL 1496E)! During
normal V.32bis connects to an USR V.32bis the modem suddenly changes the
connect speed, receives junk and terminates the call. And this happened
several times, so it can't be caused by a bad line.
What the hell is going on? Are you selling fax modems that can't fax?
;-)

First, lets start by making sure we are both doing the right things
here.
With the 1.200-C ROMs you should be using the default mod.exe. Don't
use either of the patched ones. Next, make sure the mod.exe you do have
is dated Nov. 28.
Are you using WinFax Pro, or the OEM version that we are selling?
You have made the addtions to your system.ini file right?
Are you using norton desk top or afterdark?
Can I get some of the numbers of the modems you are having trouble with?

Over the last few days I have noticed a couple of problems with my
V.32bis modem, ROM rev 1.2000c:
1) If the call is terminated by the remote modem droping the carrier the
Supra often (aprox 1 in 4 attempts) 'crashes'. The modem no longer
responds to any input and the dot matrix display stops its horizontal
scanning, leaving just one vertical band of LEDs lit. The modem has to
be powered down to reset. BIG problem!
2) When terminating a call by dropping the DTR line on the Supra, the
modem often needs to have the ATZ string sent twice to get it to
respond.
FYI: The connection in question is a V.22bis MNP5 link with the port
running at 9600 baud.
Any ideas?

Having the modem ever lose it like what you are describing means
something is wrong. Normally the processor has gone south, but hard to
say without looking at the modem.
As for the ATZ and dropping the DTR, I doubt it is related to the first
problem. How long are you waiting before sending the ATZ? It is
possible the modem is just not ready to receive a command yet.
Any how send me some email about getting the modem replaced for your

Kenny,
The delay beween the high-low-high transition and issuing the ATZ
command is about 30 seconds... long enough?
The 'display' problem is much more that just the display - the WHOLE
modem locks up - and I can repeat it. I would say it is more likely to
be a software problem than a hardware fault. However, I will EMail you
my details if you feel that it is a hardware problem.
While I think of it, has the programming spec for the voice mail upgrade

Kenny,
Ok, bad choice of word. By 'kit' I mean equipment (British slang). I
would like to emphasise that the sole reason we chose to evaluate the
Supra over a cheaper option was the MNP10. I specifically ordered the
V.32bis modem 'as advertised' and was not informed of the change of
spec. This is not on!
I have already formally contacted your company about this matter.
Cheers,
Rex

Kenny, I think you would save yourselves a lot of possible angry
customers if you would post a bulletin on your bbs and in this forum
about the MNP-10 upgrade being at no charge. Why answer a lot of
messages like mine some of which are bound to be nasty when you can
eliminate the problem altogther with an anouncement.

A very good idea and I will see if I can compose something. But the
other side of that same thought is that I would still have to get people
to read it. On the BBS it is easy, but here it is a problem.
But thanks for the suggestion.

One major change to get people to read the message is a good subject
line. One of my major gripes about the CIS subject line has always been
it's length, which causes some really cryptic subjects, such as
'MNP-10'. Is that:
1. I want to bitch about this subject
2. I want to complement you on this
3. How does the dang thing work
4. ad nauseum......

up, no need to reply) j morris@patrick-pims.af.mil (perferred)

the package. That way everyone will see it.

Hello there!
One of my client is equipped with an internal SUPRA 2400 modem and he is
having trouble transferring files with a Macintosh computer. The PC acts
as a HOST using PROCOMM 2.4.3 and the Macintosh can only upload files,
downloading always ends in error. The folks at DATASTORM seem puzzled
and I am wondering if hardware maybe to blame.
In fact, I use another brand of modem (ATI 2400/etc) and I can transfer
files back and forth with Macintosh using PROCOMM 2.4.3 and PROCOMM PLUS
2.01.
Do you have any idea?

There is no way the modem can tell what kind of machine there is on the
other end. I don't suppose you have tried it in any other situation
have you? That would be the best thing to do, try it with another
computer.
I have seen it in the past where passing files between a mac and a ibm
causes problems. Have you tried more then one transfer protocol?

Kenny,
We tried all transfer protocols that were available and the transfer
went OK between MY site and the Macintosh site, both ways (I use an ATI
2400/etc) modem). I am starting to think however that one problem might
be that I explicitly need to tell the macintosh that I transfer a BINARY
file.

You don't. You change the com port settings on the serial card inside
you machine, the modem is just a RS232 device you connect to a serial
port.

Change the COM port settings by moving the cable to the port you want

I now have two Supra V32 modems, one at home and the other at the office. I
am using Carbon Copy 5.2.2 to communicate back and forth, downloading
files,
etc. Using the AT V32 Compatible setting in Carbon Copy I am able to
connect and transfer at 9600 baud, but not with any compression, etc. At
14.4KB I can connect, but transfers are impossible. Is there a way to make
the Supra run Carbon Copy faster? Turn on compression? Run at 57KB?

Have you tried using terminal software and connecting the two modems?
It could very well be a line quality problem and not something with
CC. The best way to test this is try using terminal software and then
transfer some files.

I set up my laptop as the receiving modem, and the desktop as the sending
modem -- both Supra of course. I made the connection using the
Carbon.sup

than 2400!

Why are you surprised the modems connected at "only" 14,400 baud?
That's the maximum speed of the modems. Error correction and data
compression don't increase the speed beyond 14,400 baud, but may send
more data back and forth if it can be compressed. Set your port speeds
to the maximum CC will allow and enable hardware handshaking.

I haven't used CC in a couple of years, but be sure it's configured for
hardware handshaking from the computer to the modem, and that the
computer-to-modem speed is as high as you can set it. I'd try 57,600 as
I used it for all my other software and it works just fine.

I've done a fair amount of experimenting with CC Plus and the
Supra V.32bis. CC is not the most forgiving software with qestionable
quality connections (I have much better luck with Procomm Plus), but it
can work. Do the following:
1. Obtain the modem descriptor file for the Supra V.32bis from
Microcom's BBS (617-762-5134). It is named MODEM.SUP and will have to
be renamed to MODEM.DSC. Then go into CCINSTAL and select the Supra
V.32bis.
2. Set the baud rate to 38.4K bps on both ends.
This will allow connection at the fastest rate the modems and CC
Plus allow.
If your modems do not have the latest ROM, they will not
negotitate auto fallback from 14,400 to slower speeds. That means you
have to have a very clean connection to support 14,400. If you have the
latest ROM, then CC Plus connections are fairly reliable. If you read
the messages here on CIS you will note that all registered Supra owners
are due to receive an even newer ROM upgrade relatively soon.
If your modems do not handle auto fallback, there are ways to
force connection at 9600, which is a little more reliable. Let me know
if you need to know how, and I will explain, as it is slightly complex.
In the end, there is almost always success (albeit slow) at 2400
by selecting AT Compatible and 2400 for the calling modem from CCINSTAL.
That's as much as I have learned the hard way regarding CC Plus
and the Supra V.32bis.

You are right about CCPlus 5.2.2 being not very forgiving.
I downloaded the CARBON.SUP dfrom the Supra BBS -- yes I got through -- and
set it up as you suggested. I got connection at 14.4 between the two
Supra's, and made a connection, setting CCPlus to AT Compatible, at 2400 to
my office.
I found it impossible to turn off the sound of the modems by overwriting the
M0 command in the Supra V32 set up string in the CARBON.SUP file. I can
actually mae the connection with M0 added, but the file transfer capability
is blocked this way. I was able to set the host modem so that noise was
always off, by adding M0 after the S0=01 string in CARBON.SUP, with the same
results. Any suggestions from your hard lessons?

How are you changing the Supra modem setup string in MODEM.DSC? I'm
not an expert in these matters, but I have had problems editing
MODEM.DSC with Norton or other hex editors. The only reliable way I
know is with MODEM.EXE (a utility available on Micocom's BBS), which
allows you to edit or redefine the modem descriptors in MODEM.DSC.
Using MODEM.EXE I successfully added M0 to the Supra setup string.
Here are some more tips for making CC Plus work with poor quality
lines:
Go into the "hidden" options screen of CCINSTAL (accessed with
Shift-Backslash) and set Option 4 (Rec Char Timeout) to a higher value
(try 50 or so). Also set Option 7 (Force Error Check) to "Yes". Do
this for CC Plus on both ends. This will slow the redraw of screens and
the overall feel of CC Plus somewhat, but it will improve the
reliability of connections and help prevent disconnects.
If you are transferring files with CCDOS and the connection seems
particularly noisy, type NOISY at the CCDOS prompt. This will enable
file transfer using a smaller packet size. Again, the overall speed is
reduced, but the reliability is increased. We have (sometimes) achieved
successful file transfers using poor quality satellite links from remote
Third World locations this way.
One more thing. Consider uprgrading to CC Plus Version 6.0. It seems
to be slightly better over noisy lines than V 5.2.2.

Before purchasing your V.32 Fax/Modem could you clarify a few questions.
1) I'll be using the modem both here and overseas, specifically Israel.
Do you know of any overseas compatability problems, such as with other
types of modems? Are your modems which are sold overseas internally
different than the ones here? I'm assuming that all I'll need is a 220V
transformer.
2) Does the fax/modem work with PCTools Desktop coommunication and fax
programs? (I also sent the question over to Central Point forum)
3) In your brochure it says that the bundled Windows software is
WinFAx. Is that the full WinFax Pro version?
Thanks.

The main thing you will have to worry about over sea's is power and line

quickly when you leave the western countries.

It is the OEM version they offer, the PRO version is way to expensive to

You have the latest ROMs in your modem, so you should be using the
standard mod.exe with WinFax.
The %q and %l numbers are very bad, when you break 20 things are not
good. I'm not sure what to say about your connection problems. If the
Miracom is using the HST protocol, then this can get in the way of the
modems making a proper connection. USR had some problems with their
earilier ROMs also, what is the phone number of the trouble maker?
Do you know if WinFax Pro Test drive uses class1 or class2?

Kenny, thanks again for getting back to me, do you think tihs is a phone
line problem ? If you do I will try it from the office to see what
happens. I have problems with CIX on 081-390-1255, that's in London,
don't know how you dial this from the US, they are using Miracom DS's, I
think they all have the latest rom revisions. You could also the The
Post in Bolton on 0204 364319, again don't know what the dial code is
from the US. He is also using a Supra V32bis Fax Modem. I think WinFax
Pro Test Drive is class 2, but I don't think it's the software as I
managed to send a short fax OK last night, I gave it 6 goes and one made
it, the others resulted in some of the message arriving and then an
error report being printed by the receiving Fax machine. The curious
thing is that when the Fax machine drops carrier, the modem goes click
and says OK but the software goes on sending to the modem. There is a
lot of interest in your modems here because of the price and from BBS
traffic I see that there are some others with the same problems but in
the main most people are having no trouble at all. Could this be all
due to phone line trouble, I'm on one of the latest digital exchanges
which is what I find strange. I use a PACE V32 modem and a Communicate
Fax card on this same line without any trouble at all.

I use the standard at&f2 to set up and then issue at%g0 to stop rate

have the standard rom 1.200-c and use telepathy for cix with internal

Kenny,
I've found that if I set at%g0 the modem seems to perform better,
strange as I would have thought that if it was the line which was bad it
would have made things worse. Anyway I took it into the office to try it
on another line and it was just the same. Regarding the FAX problem I
still can't get it working, I get about 1 in 6 sent OK the rest I just
get error reports from the receiving FAX machine. I've also noticed that
before the FAX software starts to dial the modem starts to make a
buzzing noise which is similar to the noise it makes when just switched
on and before the OK appears on the display. Have you come across this,
if so why does it do this.
