-
- Whats new in 4.01
-
- "Letters....we get letters"...and we read them.
-
- This is a beta test version of Modem Doctor for those of you out there who
- want only the "latest and greatest" of something. There are several
- experimental routines in this version, and due to the fact that there seems
- to be a new modem released every week these days, I felt that it would be
- best to test it among as many people that wish to give it a try.
-
- All of the changes in this are minor, some are cosmetic.
-
- 1) Experimental tests
- Setup section -
- The speed of the initial modem diagnostics has been improved
- dramatically.
-
- Regs section -
- The DTR/DSR handshaking test has a new timer routine. Some uarts
- were being interperted with false status, especially on lower
- speed computers. Normally, DSR will stay high on most modems,
- if it stays low, that should indicate a modem that is off, or a
- bad interconnect cable. (Thanks to Roy Zider for his help).
-
- Some Modems are not employing CCITT V.54 protocol in a manner
- that allows testing of the dynamic handshaking features. A patch
- has been made that should correct this (Thanks to Stu Winokur for
- all his help)
-
- Baud Rate -
- 56000 was changed to 57600. According to National Semiconductor's
- Uart Handbook, the top speed is supposed to be 56000 + or -
- 2.86%. Well, it seems most comm programs go for the highest
- speed, so they factor in the 1600 cps difference. In actuality,
- your speed could also be 54400 too! At lower speeds the rate of
- error is too low to make a difference. In short, since everyone
- calls it 57600, so will Modem Doctor (sorry NSI).
-
- Interactive Mode -
- This module was re-compiled using the latest version of Borland's
- TASM Macro-assembler. One user has reported that the program
- hangs. I believe the problem is related to the length of time
- that interrupts are held off during screen writes. With the
- widespred use of Extended memory and EGA/VGA autoswitching, this
- could pose a problem.
-
- Loopback Mode -
- Option 3, how to build a plug, is now active in the shareware
- version. Sorry guys, I've been meaning to do this for some time,
- but forgot to remove the compiler directive.
-
- Login (Registered Only)
- Some Comm boards are now being manufactured with addresses just
- above the system board of 100H. Earlier versions of Modem Doctor
- would not log these in. Now you can.
-
- The above are minor fixes. Please take the time to beta-test this version
- and leave your comments on the Modem Doctor BBS at 410-256-3631. If you
- wish to upload this to a BBS, you may..but PLEASE make sure to tell
- everyone that this is a BETA TEST VERSION!
-
- Thanks,
-
